Background / History
Holy Soul Village and Nuoding Academy
Tang San grows up in Holy Soul Village with his father, Tang Hao, the village blacksmith. He cooks for his frequently drunken father and is regarded by Old Jack as unusually sensible. After his awakening reveals cultivation talent, Old Jack seeks a place for him at Nuoding Academy. Tang Hao initially refuses, but later permits him to attend while assigning him intensive forging practice 1 3 4 5.
Tang San retains memories of a previous life in the Tang Sect. His earlier obsession with hidden weapons left him inexperienced around girls, despite the maturity and technical knowledge he brings into his new childhood 10 142.
At Nuoding Academy, Grandmaster deduces that his Innate Full Soul Power cannot be explained by ordinary Blue Silver Grass alone. Impressed by Grandmaster’s reasoning, Tang San kneels and kowtows three times to become his disciple. He and Xiao Yan subsequently choose complementary development paths: Tang San pursues control, while Xiao Yan specializes in combat 7 8 12.
Tang San meets Xiao Wu in Dorm Seven and loses their introductory spar to her grappling techniques. They soon push their beds together and share a quilt. Meanwhile, a separate spar with Xiao Yan establishes Tang San as the junior of Grandmaster’s two disciples 10 11 12.
During their first ring hunt, Tang San and Xiao Yan jointly defeat a Mandala Snake. Tang San trusts Grandmaster’s unproven theory that a plant Martial Soul can absorb its ring, successfully becoming a Soul Master. On a later return home, he discovers Tang Hao has left; with encouragement from Xiao Yan, he resolves to continue cultivating until they meet again 16 17 21.
Shrek Academy
After six years at Nuoding Academy, Tang San travels with Xiao Yan and Xiao Wu to Suotuo City to seek Shrek Academy. He and Xiao Yan fight Dai Mubai together at the Rose Hotel, demonstrating the coordination developed during their shared training 32 33 34.
His hidden weapons become a major asset during Shrek’s entrance examination against Zhao Wuji. Because they represent six years of accumulated work, Tang San returns afterward with Xiao Yan to recover nearly every weapon left on the grounds 41 42 45.
During the Star Dou Great Forest expedition, Tang San and Xiao Yan set out to rescue Xiao Wu. Tang San subsequently endures a dangerous Man Faced Demon Spider ring absorption, gaining his third Soul Skill and eight spider-like appendages. Grandmaster later identifies those appendages as an exceptionally rare External Soul Bone 67 68 73.
In team battles, Tang San becomes Shrek’s central coordinator. Against the Imperial Fighting Team, he links all seven teammates with Blue Silver Grass and uses the connections to manipulate their positioning. He also counters Dugu Yan’s poisonous mist with the Eight Spider Lances 95 96 101.
Dugu Bo and the Immortal Herbs
After Xiao Yan is injured while shielding him from Dugu Bo, Tang San works on treating the poison in his senior brother’s body. He later confronts Dugu Bo about the poison afflicting the older man and his granddaughter, negotiating cooperation in exchange for their treatment and protection for Shrek Academy 124 126 130 134.
Tang San spends six months away with Dugu Bo, sending Grandmaster one reassuring letter. When he returns, he has reached level thirty-seven and says that Dugu Bo owes him a favor. Because of their earlier conflict, he has only alleviated Dugu Bo’s suffering rather than completely curing him 131.
He brings Immortal Herbs for his companions and explains how to use them. These include the Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum for Dai Mubai’s breakthrough and the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid to improve Oscar’s slow cultivation as a food-type Soul Master 132 134.
The Split with Xiao Yan
After Xiao Yan and Zhu Zhuqing leave Shrek, Grandmaster claims that an entity from another world has taken over Xiao Yan’s body. Tang San outwardly accepts the explanation but privately notices inconsistencies, particularly Grandmaster’s sudden improvement in cultivation talent. His own previous-life memories make him unwilling to dismiss the possibility of another world 141 142.
Tang San later examines the physical traces of the confrontation himself. Nevertheless, he remains torn between Xiao Yan and Grandmaster, whom he regards as a father figure. By the tournament finals, the former fellow disciples stand on opposing teams, with Tang San representing Shrek and Xiao Yan captaining Spirit Hall Academy 160 228 251.
Tournament Finals and Departure
Against Godwind Academy, Tang San channels Shrek’s Seven-in-One Fusion Skill through the Clear Sky Hammer. Having studied Feng Xiaotian’s momentum-building attacks, he interrupts them with an overwhelming opening blow and then uses Tool Soul True Body to secure Shrek’s advancement. The strain leaves him in severe pain when the technique ends 244 245 246.
In the final against Spirit Hall Academy, Tang San fights Xie Yue and Hu Liena using his hammer and Eight Spider Lances. Xie Yue’s Full Moon shatters the lances, and the final collision damages the Clear Sky Hammer. Tang San attempts one last attack with the lance fragments, but Xiao Yan intercepts them. Exhausted, Tang San concedes and congratulates his former senior brother 251 252.
When Spirit Hall moves to capture Xiao Wu, Tang San reveals that he already knows she is not human and declares that he will die before surrendering her. Tang Hao intervenes and eventually takes both of them away 253 254 257.
Several months later, Tang San has completely mastered his hammer technique under Tang Hao’s special training. In a forest, he hears a mental presence address him as “my king.” With his father’s permission, he follows the summons to a crystalline blue plant surrounded by unusually lush Blue Silver Grass; the supplied passage does not show the outcome 322.
Appearance
- Childhood build: Initially slight, but develops visible muscle and a steadier bearing after sustained forging practice 6.
- Purple eyes: His eyes emit purple light when he activates Purple Demon Eye 6 12.
- Jade-white hands: Mysterious Jade Hand gives his hands a white, glove-like appearance 12.
- Eight Spider Lances: Eight long, sharp appendages emerge from his back and can lift his body off the ground 73.
- Martial Soul markings: Blue Silver Grass acquires Mandala Snake-like patterns after his first ring and later displays intricate, eye-like markings 17 34.
Personality
Tang San is disciplined, self-reliant, and capable of sustained technical work. As a child, he balances cooking, forging, and cultivation; later, he spends forty-nine days secluded in a forging room producing hidden weapons. He prefers cultivation to sightseeing and willingly leaves unwanted dormitory leadership duties to Xiao Yan 5 10 35 110.
His affection is strongest toward those he considers family. He deeply misses Tang Hao, experiences Grandmaster’s care as a sense of “home,” and repeatedly places Xiao Wu’s safety before his own. His willingness to protect her remains unchanged after learning that she is not human 16 20 131 253.
That loyalty coexists with a ruthless attitude toward threats and secrecy. During the Mandala Snake hunt, he briefly considers killing Xiao Yan and Grandmaster to protect his hidden-weapon secret, then suppresses the impulse. Xiao Yan spends years trying to moderate this tendency but concludes that Tang San follows deeply ingrained rules of his own 16 41.
Tang San is also guarded and analytical. He conceals his suspicions when Grandmaster’s explanation fails to convince him, and he studies opponents after battle rather than relying solely on existing techniques 142 245.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
A plant-type Tool Martial Soul developed along the control path under Grandmaster’s guidance 11 12.
- Blue Silver Entanglement: His first Soul Skill surrounds and binds targets with tough grass carrying mildly paralyzing venom 17.
- Spider Web Restraint: His third Soul Skill produces a single-target binding web carrying the Man Faced Demon Spider’s deadly poison. Tang San states that even a Soul King cannot ignore it 68.
- Concealed deployment: Can spread underground before erupting around an opponent 34.
- Team coordination: Links teammates at the waist and pulls the connections taut to alter their positions 95 96.
- Fourth Soul Skill: Uses a Ten Thousand Year Soul Ring, though its name and complete effects are not specified in the supplied passages 234 251.
- Weaknesses: Bone Spirit Cold Flame decisively counters it, while Xie Yue’s Full Moon cuts its vines apart 51 251.
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang San’s second Martial Soul, initially concealed on the instructions of both Tang Hao and Grandmaster. Grandmaster later forbids attaching rings to it before the Titled Douluo realm without permission 11 73.
- Direct combat: Uses the hammer alongside the Eight Spider Lances to intercept Xie Yue’s Moon Blades 251.
- Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer: A hammer technique he has learned, though he judges it insufficient to stop Full Moon in their final confrontation 246 251.
- Tool Soul True Body: Manifests an enormous, dark-gold-patterned hammer using the combined reserves of Shrek’s Seven-in-One Fusion Skill 245.
- Limit: Forcing out Tool Soul True Body at his own cultivation level causes mental pain and overload 246.
Tang Sect Cultivation and Movement
- Internal cultivation: Practices the Mysterious Jade Skill; his final hidden-weapon attack is described as circulating the Mysterious Heaven Skill 6 17 252.
- Purple Demon Eye: Enhances visual tracking, allowing him to follow rapid movement. At its third realm, it reveals Xiao Wu’s nonhuman identity 12 244 253.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Hardens his hands for blocking and close combat. Its protection is eventually overcome by repeated contact with Bone Spirit Cold Flame 12 51.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Evasive footwork used against soul beasts, projectile volleys, and Yu Tianheng’s Thunder Dragon Claw 16 51 96.
Hidden-Weapon Techniques and Forging
Tang San combines previous-life Tang Sect knowledge with years of material collection and metalworking 10 45 142.
- Multi-directional attacks: Throws weapons along seemingly divergent paths that converge on a single target 41.
- Bat Wing Reincarnation: The tenth-ranked Tang Sect hidden-weapon technique; can launch up to thirty-six weapons and works with different projectiles. He uses shattered Eight Spider Lances as ammunition in the final 252.
- Manufacturing: Produces a room’s worth of refined hidden weapons during forty-nine days of seclusion 110.
- Combat limits: Against Dugu Bo, he judges that his current weapons cannot secure a one-hit kill; he would need one of the top three weapons recorded in the Hundred Separations of Hidden Weapon 130.
Eight Spider Lances
An External Soul Bone obtained with the Man Faced Demon Spider’s ring 67 73.
- Movement and support: Extends from his back to raise and support his body 73.
- Poison absorption: Completely absorbs the poisonous mist covering half the arena during his battle with Dugu Yan 101.
- Defense and offense: Intercepts Moon Blades and serves as a set of striking limbs 251.
- Growth: Grandmaster explains that Soul Bones become stronger as their owner’s Soul Power increases 73.
- Durability limit: The lances shatter one after another against Full Moon 251.
Poison and Medicinal Knowledge
- Diagnoses the accumulated poison affecting Dugu Bo and warns that it also threatens his descendants 130.
- Prepares treatment for Xiao Yan and alleviates Dugu Bo’s suffering 124 126 131.
- Selects Immortal Herbs according to his companions’ cultivation needs and provides instructions for absorption 132 134.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Storage belt used to carry hidden weapons and other equipment 36 41 110.
- Silent Sleeve Arrow — Concealed weapon used to pierce the Mandala Snake’s eye, creating the opening for its defeat 16.
- Dagger — Given to him by Grandmaster; thrown into the Mandala Snake’s mouth and through its head 16 17.
- Dragon Whisker Needles — Top-ten Tang Sect hidden weapons recovered from a crystal containing nearly twenty thousand golden beads. Tang San stores them in his belt and conceals individual beads beneath his fingernails 36.
- Flying God Claw — Arm-mounted device with five metal claws and a retracting rope. It can crush stone, anchor to a tree, and pull its user through the air, but does not provide true flight 110.
- Assorted forged hidden weapons — A personal arsenal accumulated over six years and later expanded through intensive forging 45 110.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father and later hammer instructor. Tang San remains deeply attached to him through years of separation and tearfully recognizes him when he intervenes at the finals 20 254 322.
- Grandmaster — Teacher and father figure. Tang San trusts his cultivation theories and remains emotionally bound to him even while suspecting that he conceals the truth about Xiao Yan 8 17 142 228.
- Xiao Yan — Childhood friend, former senior disciple, and longtime combat partner. Their relationship breaks over Grandmaster, leaving mutual respect and complicated affection rather than a simple personal hatred 12 34 252.
- Xiao Wu — Closest companion and beloved; partner in the Three-Five Combination. Tang San knows her nonhuman identity before its public revelation and chooses to protect her regardless 84 131 253.
- Old Jack — Village elder who champions his education after his awakening and asks Xiao Yan to comfort him when Tang Hao leaves 4 21.
- Dugu Bo — Initially a dangerous adversary, later a negotiated collaborator who owes Tang San a favor. Tang San deliberately stops short of completely curing him 130 131.
- Dai Mubai — Shrek teammate who repeatedly supports and places confidence in him, including when Tang San sides against Xiao Yan’s objections during the Blue Sunshine Academy dispute 60 228.
- Ning Rongrong — Teammate who hopes to establish cooperation between Tang San’s hidden-weapon craftsmanship and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 135.
