Background / History

Transmigration and the Other Xiao Yan

Originally an Earthling, Xiao Yan transmigrates to Douluo Continent and is taken in by Old Jack, who finds him in the woods. His previous-life memories make him unusually mature, and he regularly helps with household work 1.

At three, he encounters an identical child named Xiao Yan in a dreamlike space. They discover that they share the same previous life and memories but now possess independent thoughts in different worlds. During their next meeting, they promise to cultivate together and become legends in their respective worlds 1.

The connection is not limited to conversation: a diamond-shaped jade disappears from Douluo Xiao Yan’s hand and appears with his counterpart on Dou Qi Continent. The counterpart is later called Xiao Huohuo, distinguishing him from Douluo Xiao Yan 1 164.

Nuoding Academy and Early Training

After awakening Twin Martial Souls, Xiao Yan experiments with Dou Techniques taught by his counterpart. His initial attempts fail, but merging with Soul Division allows him to successfully use Stone Shattering Palm. Before entering Nuoding Academy, he masters Stone Shattering Palm, Sky-Rending Claw, and Swift Step 3 5 6.

He and Tang San become Grandmaster’s disciples. Their first spar ends with Xiao Yan’s Soul Division-enhanced palm strike sending Tang San flying. Grandmaster subsequently guides both boys in hunting their first Soul Rings and recommends a combat-focused development path for Xiao Yan’s flame Martial Soul 12 18.

First Journey to Dou Qi Continent

After reaching level twenty-one, Xiao Yan experiences his counterpart’s world directly. Using his Martial Soul and Soul Skills, he kills a Three-Star Dou Zhe during the Jia Lie Family’s marketplace provocation 21 24 25.

While occupying his counterpart’s position, he challenges the Xiao Clan elders’ reluctance to support their younger generation. He also identifies the mysterious ring absorbing his counterpart’s cultivation energy. Withdrawing Soul Division allows the two Xiao Yans to return to their own worlds; later, they can appear together in the Dou Qi world 27 28 29 30.

Grandmaster’s Betrayal

Xiao Yan initially develops genuine affection for Grandmaster, regarding him as a father figure after years of instruction. He trusts him enough to discuss another world’s existence while concealing his counterpart’s identity 106.

Grandmaster’s research eventually becomes a betrayal. While Xiao Yan is unconscious, Grandmaster separates part of Soul Division from his arm; the severed portion enters Grandmaster and breaks his level-thirty bottleneck. Later accounts establish that Grandmaster coveted Xiao Yan’s Martial Soul, imprisoned his Spiritual Soul Power for half a year, and subjected him to physical and mental torment 128 460.

The betrayal destroys their teacher–disciple relationship and permanently damages Xiao Yan’s bond with Tang San, whose loyalty to Grandmaster places them on opposing paths 252 460.

Spirit Hall and the Tournament

Xiao Yan and Zhu Zhuqing enter Spirit Hall’s sphere under Qian Renxue’s protection. During their audience with Bibi Dong, Xiao Yan withstands Soul Power pressure approaching level sixty-five through the combined support of his Martial Souls 151.

He defeats Yan despite still being a Soul Ancestor, then challenges Hu Liena and Xie Yue together for Qian Renxue’s promised rewards. During the academy tournament, Sword Douluo recognizes his simultaneous use of extreme heat and cold as a self-created Soul Skill. Xiao Yan ultimately wins the championship 217 218 250 252.

After acquiring his fifth ring, he returns to Holy Soul Village with Zhu Zhuqing and reunites with Old Jack 267.

Black Alliance and the Central Plains

Seeking strength sufficient to face Bibi Dong, Xiao Yan infiltrates the Black Alliance under the identity of Elder Tang. Han Feng places him in charge of Black Rock City, hoping to draw him away from the Blood Sect. Xiao Yan leaves a Soul Division double behind and departs for the Central Plains 370 387.

In Tianya City, he defeats Gao Yuan but is overwhelmed by Five-Star Dou Zong Luo Cheng’s pressure. Later, Wind Lightning Pavilion attempts to detain him to repay a favor to Yellow Springs Pavilion, forcing him to weigh his own survival against the safety of Lin Wan’er and Tan Bin 389 415.

Venerable Feng recognizes the connection between Xiao Yan’s spear technique and Yao Chen. He also confirms that Xiao Yan possesses multiple Heavenly Flames without cultivating the Flame Mantra. Xiao Yan subsequently recovers and consolidates his level sixty-five foundation in the Star Realm 433 443.

Return to Douluo and Later Recovery

Using his improved gateway, Xiao Yan returns to Douluo. He later tells Xiao Wu that a senior’s stored power saved him from Spirit Hall, but that the power has been exhausted and Spirit Hall is hunting him 445 460.

After reuniting with Zhu Zhuqing, he is acknowledged as the Dark Hall’s true master. He tells its assembled members that he split the Pope’s Palace, injured Bibi Dong, and shattered Yue Guan and Gui Mei’s Martial Soul Avatars 477.

Zhu Zhuqing later dies taking a blow for him. Her death causes him to lose control of his emotions, allowing overwhelming killing intent to invade his mind. An Immortal Herb helps prevent him from sinking completely into slaughter, though the effects persist during his subsequent battles 498.

Following further fighting against Black Alliance members, Xiao Yan undergoes treatment at Jia Nan Academy. He repairs hidden spatial cracks in his meridians and refines lingering hostility with his Heavenly Flames. After recovery, he tests himself against Inner Academy experts and eventually resumes cultivation at a secluded Xiao Clan courtyard 503 505 508 515.

Appearance

• Resemblance: His face is identical to Xiao Huohuo’s, prompting Xiao Ding and Xiao Li to wonder whether he is another son of Xiao Zhan 287.

Personality

Xiao Yan is persistent and experimental. Repeated failures with Stone Shattering Palm lead him to improve his Soul Power control and investigate how Martial Souls can bridge the differences between the two cultivation systems 5.

He values affection and loyalty, shown by his attachment to Old Jack, his original trust in Grandmaster, and his willingness to protect Zhu Zhuqing. Grandmaster’s betrayal makes him far less willing to trust others, even when Jia Nan Academy offers a comparatively safe refuge 106 267 326 503.

He also has a teasing streak. He jokingly complains about his counterpart’s privileged upbringing and uses humor to acknowledge the painful experiences shared by himself, Zhu Zhuqing, and Qian Renxue 32 260.

Although he avoids provoking others without cause, he refuses humiliation or submission merely because an opponent is stronger. This remains true when facing Dou Zong-level pressure from Cai Lin 510 511.
