Personality
Old Dog presents himself as a lazy, cynical cleaner interested mainly in money, cigarettes, alcohol, and small comforts. His apparent indifference conceals a watchful survival instinct: he checks unstable structures, insists on escape routes, and keeps his hand near his crowbar even while seemingly dozing on a train 1 2 10.
His greed can override that caution. Finding gold beneath a Chitauri corpse makes him reach for it despite the surrounding danger, and he initially suspects Zhao Fan of wanting the entire haul when told to stop. Nevertheless, he offers an equal split before the attempted recovery 2.
Beneath his abrasive manner, he is protective and capable of generosity. He saves Zhao Fan from a structural collapse, introduces him to Shadow, and initially refuses a three-thousand-dollar share so Zhao Fan can pay rent and eat properly 2 3 11.
His ambitions center on security rather than power. Permanent employment and medical insurance overwhelm him, while a successful raid inspires plans to buy a villa and bring his daughter to New York for a better home and education. Even after his circumstances improve, he remains uneasy with unfamiliar comfort and needs recorded subway noise to fall asleep in his new quarters 22 24 33.
Background / History
Cleanup Work and the Zone A-4 Explosion
Six months after the Battle of New York, Old Dog works alongside Zhao Fan clearing the city’s ruins for D.O.D.C. He supplements the poorly paid work by looking for unofficial salvage opportunities and maintains contacts in the underground trade 1 10.
While clearing a ruined clothing store in Zone A-4, he stops Zhao Fan from moving a slab supporting a damaged wall. He identifies the arrangement as a “stress trap,” preventing Zhao Fan from being buried in the resulting collapse. The newly exposed basement contains dead National Guard soldiers, a Chitauri corpse, and a damaged case of gold 2.
Old Dog nearly retrieves the gold before Zhao Fan notices a hum beneath the corpse. Recognizing that its energy core is still active, Old Dog orders them to run. They survive the explosion, but a steel bar injures his left leg. He instructs Zhao Fan to report only a secondary collapse and unidentified explosion, concealing their unauthorized treasure hunt 2 3.
Rick subsequently pressures the pair through a hazardous assignment in Zone C-2. When Old Dog’s injured leg gives out, Zhao Fan completes both men’s workload. Afterward, Old Dog gives him a coin bearing the address of Shadow’s bar, Wreckage, while warning him not to trust her easily 3.
The Salvage Team
Old Dog joins Zhao Fan and Benjamin Lee in the informal “Garbage Recycling Squad.” For their bank-vault operation, he assesses the collapse risks, estimates the black-market value of an alien weapon core, and agrees to arrange a scanner malfunction at checkpoint D3 6 7.
He accompanies Zhao Fan through the sewers to recover a Chitauri energy rifle. During their escape, he directs them away from likely sealed areas and later supplies a high-density containment bag for the recovered core. He then escorts Zhao Fan to Wreckage and introduces him to Shadow 8 10 11.
The team’s next major target is living Leviathan tissue beneath Queens Industrial Park 19. Old Dog helps with the sewer approach, fights the site’s guard robots, and carries the recovered sample during their escape. Zhao Fan gives him ten thousand dollars from the sale and urges him to seek treatment or lie low 16 18 20.
Joining S.C.U.
Evelyn Reed exposes the falsified overtime records covering Zhao Fan and Old Dog’s activities and pressures both into joining the Special Cleanup Unit. For Old Dog, the contract’s permanent position, doubled pay, and full medical insurance represent a long-desired escape from precarious temporary work 22.
He becomes Zhao Fan’s regular field partner while Benjamin provides remote technical support. Their assignments include entering a sealed Hydra laboratory, fighting mutant insects, and intervening in an attack on a D.O.D.C. transport under the guise of helpful passersby 25 26 29.
During raids on Hydra’s New York safe houses, Old Dog covers escape routes, helps collect weapons and valuables, and participates in the seizure of the organization’s funds. The haul prompts him to announce plans for a house with a swimming pool and a better life for his daughter 32 33.
Project Insight and Agency Reorganization
During the flight from New York, Old Dog’s SUV serves as the group’s escape vehicle. He later boards Helicarrier Alpha with Zhao Fan using a grappling line and fuel pipe, fights Hydra soldiers, and is assigned to reach the server room while Zhao Fan confronts an unstable Extremis-enhanced giant 35 37.
He assists in recovering the next-generation repulsor engine core before the carrier crashes. Zhao Fan cushions their escape into the Potomac with Kinetic Repulsion, allowing both to reach shore alive. They subsequently reunite with Evelyn and Benjamin and leave Washington 39 40.
Following D.O.D.C.’s reorganization, Old Dog becomes S.C.U.’s field foreman at the Triskelion wreckage, directing roughly fifty screened contractors. He helps clear personnel from a sensitive recovery site and prepares transport for twelve recovered Hydra phase-change energy rifles 41 44.
Klaue Operation
For the raid on Ulysses Klaue’s African shipbreaking yard, Zhao Fan assigns Old Dog suppressive fire and heavy weapons. Benjamin also entrusts him with miniature signal repeaters to maintain communications through the site’s jamming 48.
Although privately worried about surviving Klaue’s weapons, Old Dog joins the operation. At Zhao Fan’s signal, he detonates explosives in the fuel-storage area, opening the team’s overt assault with a massive blast. The team ultimately captures Klaue, seizes his Vibranium, and departs aboard a Quinjet 48 49 50.
