Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Unenhanced human 1 4 Arrives with foreknowledge of future disasters but no system or superpowers. His frail, office-conditioned body initially struggles with manual labor.
Basic Precision Throwing 3 Prolonged contact with a Chitauri infantry armor fragment activates his system and grants accurate throwing. Successfully lands a paper ball in a flowerpot fifty meters away.
Weak Energy Perception 8 Acquired by touching a Chitauri energy rifle’s core. Immediately uses it to detect an infrared sensor net obstructing his escape.
Kinetic Repulsion — Level One 19 Analyzes a Leviathan biological core while under attack by Kestrel. Gains the ability to absorb incoming physical kinetic energy and return it through a directional palm field with multiplied force.
Improved Extremis enhancement; Basic Self-Healing 23 24 Evelyn’s modified Extremis-derived infusion increases constitution, strength, and agility. Wound-healing speed increases by 300%; subsequent readings place his constitution above 95% of humans and show a 40% increase in energy-conduction efficiency.
Extreme Cellular Activity 27 Absorbs leaking Hydra nutrient solution. Receives a 24-hour, 10% increase to all attributes, with half of that increase retained afterward.
Hard Carapace — D+ defense 28 First detailed assessment of the ability obtained from a Hydra Parasitic Guard during the shelter mission. Assimilation eliminates biological rejection while preserving its defensive properties.
Mental Pressure; Bioelectric Burst 29 Deep extraction of the Heart of Leviathan grants low-level mental intimidation/control and the ability to discharge biological energy as high-voltage arcs.
Basic Space Resistance; Phase Blink — incomplete 33 Develops after acquiring a Cosmic Cube fragment and spending two weeks training. The resulting spatial movement remains unstable.
System Space unlocked 39 Unlocks storage while retrieving the Next-Generation Repulsor Engine Core from Helicarrier Alpha.

Consolidated ability assessment 41 Improved Extremis is classified as high-tier and dynamically stable. Energy Perception reaches 500 meters; incomplete Phase Blink permits a 0.1-second phase movement, shifting him roughly half a meter.

Background

Zhao Fan awakens in a shabby Queens apartment after a hangover, carrying the memories of another man with the same name. Outside lies New York’s devastation following the Avengers’ battle with the Chitauri. Although he knows about Hydra’s conspiracy, Sokovia’s fall, and Thanos’s future snap, that knowledge initially does little to solve his immediate poverty 1.

The original Zhao Fan had been an unobtrusive office clerk. After transmigrating, Zhao struggles to find food and work, becoming so desperate that he considers suicide. His neighbor Maya Chen gives him food, helps him navigate everyday life, and intervenes when his landlord threatens eviction. Zhao earns a month’s free rent by repairing a complicated basement leak overnight 4.

He eventually becomes an externally hired D.O.D.C. cleanup worker. Even obtaining that job proves difficult: a recruiter dismisses him as too weak for rubble clearance. By the opening chapter, his bank balance is only $7.35, and overdue rent again threatens his housing 1 4.

Appearance

  • General features: A young Chinese American man with black hair and dark eyes; initially lean, somewhat scholarly-looking, and visibly undernourished 22 28.
  • Early condition: Maya remembers his sunken, bloodshot eyes, gaunt face, unkempt stubble, and disoriented expression shortly after his arrival 4.
  • After enhancement: Develops streamlined, powerful muscles rather than a bulky build. Extremis activity can produce golden or golden-red light beneath his skin 28 41.
  • Ability manifestations: Hard Carapace can darken reinforced areas into a metallic-looking keratin surface; combining it with thermal energy produces a red-and-black appearance 28 41.
  • Civilian presentation: Cuts his hair, shaves, and wears clean casual clothes to resemble an ordinary young office worker, though his watchful eyes remain difficult to disguise 21.

Personality

Zhao begins exhausted and despairing, but desperation develops into calculated caution. He suppresses his anger at Rick rather than retaliating openly, recognizes the value of surveillance avoidance, and destroys equipment that could connect his civilian identity to illegal salvage operations 2 3 6 22.

His growing ruthlessness does not erase his loyalty. He completes Jose’s workload while the older man is injured, protects Benjamin from bullying, and repays Maya’s kindness with sculpture materials and a coveted paintbrush set. Protecting those who helped him becomes an explicit reason to pursue greater power 3 4 5 12.

Killing the Rust Gang and witnessing Kestrel’s massacre force him beyond the moral assumptions of his former peaceful life. He becomes willing to exploit enemies, negotiate with dangerous patrons, and accept increasingly inhuman modifications to survive. Nevertheless, he remains conscious of the separation between his violent work and the ordinary life represented by Maya 15 21 28 36.

As a leader, he values useful specialists and mutual backing. He gives Benjamin clear operational rules, delegates technical work, and repeatedly makes survival a mission priority. Evelyn later recognizes that he has changed from an anxious laborer into someone capable of confronting assassins and military authorities 6 16 33 45 47.

Abilities & Skills

System Analysis and Assimilation

His system analyzes alien remnants and compatible biological or energy sources, producing abilities related to their properties 3 19 28.

  • Contact-based analysis: Unlocks abilities from Chitauri armor, an energy-rifle core, and a Leviathan biological core 3 8 19.
  • Energy extraction: Drains the Heart of Leviathan internally while preserving its outward shell 29.
  • Biological suppression: Disrupts a Hydra parasitic beetle’s bioelectric activity through direct contact, leaving it limp 26.
  • Weak-point assessment: Identifies the unstable circulation and heat-dissipation requirements of an overloaded Extremis carrier 37.
  • Limits: Severe damage prevents analysis of the Chitauri Biomechanical Arm. Acquiring more abilities also increases his nutritional demands and bodily strain 14 28 41.

Precision Throwing

Provides targeting assistance through a visible ballistic trajectory and impact marker. Its range, speed, and force can improve alongside his physical capabilities 5 41.

  • Strikes a small structural fastener through obstructing debris to stage an apparent accident against Rick 5.
  • Uses specially made throwing knives in ambushes and close-range counterattacks 14 19.
  • Severs a beer can’s pull tab without spilling its contents 16.
  • Limit: Accuracy does not guarantee a hit against superior combatants; Kestrel deflects a three-knife attack 19.

Weak Energy Perception

Detects energy signatures and distinguishes targets by their wavelengths. Its documented sensing radius reaches 500 meters 41.

  • Detects concealed security sensors and escape routes 8.
  • Reads weapon charging patterns to navigate a battlefield 19.
  • Locates vulnerable energy nodes in Chitauri equipment 29.
  • Senses weapon batteries through walls and detects soldiers’ heartbeats 37.

Kinetic Repulsion

Initially absorbs incoming physical kinetic energy and reflects it through a high-intensity directional field. Its advanced form allows precise shaping rather than simple pushing 19 40.

  • Counterattack: Stops Kestrel’s blade and blasts her into rubble 19.
  • Cushioning: Reduces the impact of falls, including the escape from Helicarrier Alpha 35 39.
  • Contact destruction: Combines a hardened punch with a concentrated burst to blast through a titanium-alloy training dummy 28.
  • Shaping: Creates an almost invisible cutting membrane capable of slicing lead sheeting 40.
  • Area attack: Releases a ground-centered shockwave that throws surrounding mercenaries into the air 49.
  • Limits: Early recoil nearly breaks his arms. Heavy attacks can still transmit enough force through his defenses to drive him backward 23 38.

Improved Extremis Virus

Enhances his physique, accelerates healing, and grants thermal-energy manipulation. By his later assessment, the improved virus has reached a stable dynamic equilibrium 23 41.

  • Raises strength, agility, constitution, sensory acuity, and energy-conduction efficiency 23 24.
  • Rapidly closes minor wounds with golden-red heat 28.
  • Supports physical performance beyond human limits, including enhanced dynamic vision 29 50.
  • Supplies heat used alongside electricity to disrupt Klaue’s sonic weapon 50.
  • Limit: Stable Extremis activity does not eliminate the cumulative overload caused by his other powers 41.

Hard Carapace

Forms a high-density biological keratin membrane beneath the skin without permanently changing his human appearance 28.

  • Provides passive protection and stronger localized hardening 28 41.
  • Reinforces fists and knees for close combat while dispersing recoil 28 38.
  • Stops conventional blades and small-arms fire; later withstands Klaue’s point-blank revolver shot with only a white mark 28 41 50.
  • Weakness: High-frequency sonic attacks destabilize the layer and transmit damaging resonance through his body 49 50.

Mental Pressure and Bioelectric Burst

Both abilities originate from absorbing the Heart of Leviathan’s energy 29.

  • Mental Pressure: Releases mental shocks that briefly intimidate or control low-intelligence creatures 29 41.
  • Bioelectric Burst: Converts stored biological energy into high-voltage electrical arcs 29 41.
  • After the absorption, he can sense nearby Chitauri creatures through an armored compartment and vaguely perceive their basic emotions 29.

Spatial Abilities

Exposure to a Cosmic Cube fragment produces Basic Space Resistance and incomplete Phase Blink 33.

  • Phase Blink: Briefly renders his movement translucent and insubstantial, allowing him to evade an Extremis giant’s strike 38.
  • Documented limit: Approximately half a meter of displacement within a 0.1-second phase movement; not yet a complete spatial jump 41.
  • System Space: A separate storage function containing one cubic meter of absolute stasis, used to hold the repulsor core and later vibranium 40 41 50.

Salvage and Tactical Leadership

  • Uses leverage, improvised tools, and structural observation to solve repair and extraction problems 2 4 8.
  • Coordinates infiltrations with Benjamin’s hacking and Jose’s field support 6 9 17.
  • Combines legal salvage authority, communications disruption, and concealed sentry turrets to repel Rumlow’s armed convoy 44.
  • Uses foreknowledge to identify opportunities involving Hydra, Project Insight, and Klaue’s vibranium stockpile 33 35 46.

Equipment & Resources

  • Throwing knives: Initially carries ten specially made black-market knives; later receives special-alloy knives through S.C.U. 14 25.
  • Lead Shadow backpack: A heavy, radiation-resistant salvage pack with high-density lead lining and circulating filtration 14.
  • S.C.U. protective suit: Bulletproof and stab-resistant high-strength fiber clothing with built-in life support 25.
  • Electric batons: Legally issued high-current weapons; a later pair extends into electrically charged spears 25 29.
  • Stark monitoring wristband/tactical terminal: Authenticates him and reports his vital signs and energy radiation to Evelyn 22 23.
  • Alloy dagger: Uses an oscillating alloy blade during the Helicarrier infiltration 37.
  • Chitauri-metal crowbar: Reforged by D.O.D.C. engineers and described as hard enough to pry open tank armor 44.
  • Next-Generation Repulsor Engine Core: Retrieved from Alpha and retained as the planned external power source for his armor 39 41.
  • Cosmic Cube fragment: Seized from a Hydra operative’s apartment; provides the exposure behind his spatial development 33.
  • Nightmare prototype: Bio-armor powered by the salvaged repulsor core. Its amplified blast melts a steel target, but its titanium frame and conduits fail under the output 46.
  • Vibranium and sonic research: Captured from Klaue to address Nightmare’s material limitations; the haul includes an incomplete Sonic Solidification Generator blueprint 46 50.

Relationships

  • Maya Chen — Neighbor, first personal bond after transmigration, and close friend. Her help sustains him through his poorest period; she later calls him her muse and best friend. He conceals his dangerous work from her, while Evelyn identifies her as his weakness 4 12 21 22 42.
  • Jose Rodriguez / Old Dog — Senior coworker, salvage partner, and founding squad member. They save one another, infiltrate restricted sites together, and survive Alpha’s destruction 2 6 17 39.
  • Benjamin Lee / Fat Ben — Hacker and founding teammate. Zhao accepts him after discovering his access to D.O.D.C. systems; Benjamin supplies intelligence, falsified records, communications support, and equipment modifications 6 9 22 33.
  • Dr. Evelyn Reed — Initially a coercive supervisor and researcher monitoring his development. Her treatment earns his genuine gratitude, and they later establish a pact exchanging his discoveries and effectiveness for resources and protection 22 23 31.
  • Shadow — Black-market buyer and dangerous employer. Zhao profits from her commissions but grows suspicious of her agenda, then alters her convoy operation after discovering its hidden self-destruct mechanism 15 21 27 29.
  • Kestrel / Yelena Belova — Former enemy who nearly kills him during the Leviathan-core battle. He later defeats and recruits her, agreeing to cover her younger sister’s remaining treatment costs 19 47.
  • Rattlesnake Rick — Bullying coworker and recurring antagonist. Zhao secretly humiliates him with a staged paint-bucket accident and later encounters his forces during the industrial-park operation 3 5 17.
  • Brock Rumlow — Hostile military observer who attempts to seize Hydra salvage. Zhao forces his convoy to withdraw and secretly places a tracking Nanobug on his exoskeleton 41 44.
  • Ulysses Klaue — Target of the vibranium raid. His sonic weapons expose a major defensive weakness, but Zhao’s team defeats him and preserves him as a captive bargaining chip 49 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Salvage Operations

An energy-core explosion leaves Zhao and Jose injured and convinces Zhao that intuition and luck cannot keep him alive. The subsequent activation of his system turns battlefield debris into a route toward power. After Benjamin joins them, the Garbage Recycling Squad steals a Chitauri rifle core, evades Evelyn’s search, and smuggles the prize through security inside an industrial waste vacuum 2 3 6 8 9.

A later subway expedition forces Zhao into lethal combat with the Rust Gang. Although their leader damages the sought-after biomechanical arm, Zhao salvages its active core and sells it to Shadow for $12,000. The same expedition reveals Kestrel’s overwhelming strength through the destruction of the Steel Monster mercenary squad 14 15.

Leviathan Core and S.C.U. Recruitment

Zhao accepts Shadow’s commission to retrieve a Leviathan specimen’s biological heart. During the battle beneath the Queens industrial park, he completes the core’s analysis under Kestrel’s assault, awakens Kinetic Repulsion, and escapes with Jose 15 17 19.

His concealment fails when Evelyn exposes Benjamin’s fabricated alibi. She compels Zhao and Jose to join S.C.U., where Zhao receives improved accommodations, monitoring equipment, and the Extremis-derived treatment needed to support his abilities 22 23.

Hydra Shelter and Convoy Ambush

During a mission into a Hydra facility, Zhao discovers that its leaking nutrient solution can feed his system. He absorbs it while sealing the leak and secures an official S.C.U. captaincy 26 27.

Shadow’s next commission offers $1 million to place a device on a D.O.D.C. convoy. Rather than follow her plan, Zhao and Benjamin modify the operation. Zhao uses the resulting ambush to drain the Heart of Leviathan, defeat Shadow’s assassin, and escape before War Machine secures the battlefield 27 29.

Hydra Raids and Project Insight

Zhao’s team raids Hydra safe houses for weapons, money, intelligence, and a master decryption key. A further raid yields a Cosmic Cube fragment. Evelyn agrees to help legalize some of their gains in exchange for intelligence and weapon samples 32 33.

After escaping an attack on D.O.D.C. headquarters, Zhao leads the team toward Washington and targets Project Insight’s Helicarriers. He and Jose board Alpha, fight toward its server room, retrieve its repulsor engine core, and survive the crash into the Potomac 35 37 39.

Nightmare and the Vibranium Raid

Recognizing that his accumulating abilities are overloading his body, Zhao proposes using the repulsor core as an external energy hub. Nightmare’s first coupling test proves powerful but destroys its inadequate frame, making vibranium the next priority 41 46.

He recruits Yelena and leads the team against Klaue’s African shipyard. Klaue’s sonic attacks initially bypass Zhao’s defenses, but the team destroys his weapons, exploits a weakness in the Sonic Maze, and captures him. They depart with raw vibranium and research materials; Nightmare’s completed vibranium upgrade is not yet shown 47 49 50.
