| Status | Active in the Fourth Holy Grail War 23 26 |
| First Appearance | Introduced in a summoning video and participates in the group chat 7 |
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: A blonde girl with a conspicuous upright lock of hair, or ahoge 7.
- Battle attire: Blue-and-white armor formed from magical energy 16 17.
- Modern clothing: Wears a black suit in the system’s footage of her first duel with Diarmuid 16.
- Concealed weapon: Her sword is normally hidden by Invisible Air, obscuring its appearance during combat 16 23.
Personality
Artoria places considerable importance on knightly honor. She readily accepts Diarmuid’s challenge and initially assumes that a fellow knight would not deceive her. Feng Xi points out that an opponent can exploit this trust through omissions and misdirection without actually lying 17 23.
Her loyalty does not require approval of her allies’ methods. Although she despises Kiritsugu’s ambush tactics, she intervenes when he is threatened because they are on the same side 25. Cruelty toward children provokes much stronger anger: Bluebeard’s atrocities lead her to abandon any pretense of treating their confrontation as an ordinary contest for the Grail 28 29.
Artoria believes a king should protect the country and sacrifice herself for her ideals. Britain’s destruction leaves her burdened with guilt, yet she admits that she would probably make the same decisions if given another chance. Criticism of her kingship shakes her confidence until Lancelot reminds her that her knights and people genuinely supported her 43 44.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Physical Strength
- Fights Diarmuid’s coordinated twin-spears with Excalibur, adapting her defense once she knows how his weapons work 23.
- Possesses B-rank Strength, matching Red Hare’s raw strength during their clash 25.
- Is not proficient at one-handed swordsmanship; damage to her left wrist severely reduces her effectiveness in the system’s footage 17 29.
- Is assessed by El-Melloi II as one of the war’s two strongest Servants alongside Gilgamesh. He attributes her poor performance in the videos to unfamiliarity with Diarmuid’s Noble Phantasms rather than a lack of power 36.
Instinct
- Uses wind sounds and intuition to determine the most suitable action in combat, functioning as a form of predictive analysis 17.
- Can anticipate an opponent’s next attack after observing their fighting patterns 16.
- Limitation: Depends on available information. It fails to account for Gáe Dearg’s ability to bypass her magical armor when she does not yet know the spear’s properties 16 17.
Invisible Air
- Conceals Excalibur, preventing opponents from clearly seeing the blade 23.
- Can be released offensively; in the Bluebeard footage, Artoria uses it to destroy a Sea Demon restraining her 29.
- Limitation: Requires concentration. Pain from tightening restraints later prevents her from activating it 29.
Magical Armor
- Materializes armor around herself using magical energy 16 17.
- Can dismiss the armor to increase her speed, then restore it when needed 17.
- Limitation: Gáe Dearg disrupts magical energy and bypasses the armor. In the actual docks duel, she instead counters that spear directly while using her armor against Gáe Buidhe 17 23.
Magic Resistance
- Resists the combat effects of Diarmuid’s charm curse. Diarmuid explicitly credits the Saber class’s Magic Resistance after she makes clear that his charm will not slow her sword 16.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Excalibur — Her sword, drawn beneath the concealment of Invisible Air during the actual docks battle 23.
- Magical armor — Blue-and-white defensive equipment that she can summon and dismiss 16 17.
- Avalon — associated summoning relic — Held by Kiritsugu before the planned summoning and later polished by Irisviel. The supplied events do not show Artoria carrying it herself 7 12.
Background / History
Artoria ruled Britain before its destruction and regards the kingdom’s fall during her reign as a personal failure. Her purpose in seeking the Holy Grail is to overturn that outcome and save her homeland 28 43.
Her surviving knights offer a different assessment of her reign. Lancelot states that Artoria saved Britain, won sincere support from its people, and led the kingdom to glory. He accepts responsibility for Britain’s destruction and Gareth’s death rather than allowing Artoria to bear all the blame 44.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Summoning Revelations and Parallel Worlds
The system first introduces Artoria through footage of a summoning ritual. It subsequently identifies her as Kiritsugu Emiya’s Saber, exposing her identity before the participants’ planned summons have taken place. Kiritsugu is surprised to learn that King Arthur is a young girl 7 9.
A later question presents footage from a parallel Fourth Holy Grail War. Artoria recognizes the shield carried by Mash Kyrielight, despite knowing a different wielder, and remains certain of that recognition after Mash is identified as a Demi-Servant 9 10.
The “Who Is King Arthur?” question further challenges her assumptions by revealing several alternate King Arthurs alongside unrelated women who resemble her 11 12.
Diarmuid’s Duel: Footage and Actual Battle
The system’s footage exposes both Diarmuid’s tactics and Artoria’s vulnerabilities before their actual encounter 16 17 23.
| Event | System footage | Actual encounter |
|---|---|---|
| Defense against Gáe Dearg | Artoria relies on her armor and suffers a waist wound when the spear bypasses it 16. | She specifically counters Gáe Dearg while reserving her armor for Gáe Buidhe 23. |
| Second spear | Diarmuid’s discarded yellow spear misleads her; its curse leaves her wrist unable to heal 17. | Forewarned by the video, she avoids falling for the same tactic 23. |
| Interruption | Iskandar arrives in a bull-drawn chariot and stops the duel 17. | Iskandar interrupts on a motorcycle despite her request that he leave their duel alone 23. |
The actual docks battle expands into a confrontation among multiple teams. Artoria attacks the apparent Zhang Jue to protect Kiritsugu, then discovers that her opponent is Red Hare in disguise. Their exchange ends without a decisive result, and she withdraws with Irisviel as the other participants disperse 25 26.
Bluebeard’s Atrocities
Another system video shows Artoria confronting Bluebeard in a forest filled with children’s corpses. He mistakes her for Jeanne d’Arc and uses a captive child as bait; the child and surrounding bodies transform into Sea Demons that attack her 28.
Still impaired by Diarmuid’s cursed wrist wound in that footage, Artoria cannot break through the replenishing monsters. She identifies Bluebeard’s spellbook as the source of the problem but is restrained before she can reach him. Diarmuid rescues her, and the two fight together against the Sea Demons 29 30.
These events are viewed footage, not a subsequent battle in the current war: Bluebeard has been prevented from being summoned there. Artoria nevertheless reacts furiously to his approval of the killings and reassures Irisviel that she will not repeat the situation shown 28 29.
Debate Over Kingship
The system places Artoria among four royal team leaders for a debate over who is most suited to possess the Holy Grail. She declares her wish to change Britain’s fate, prompting Qin Shi Huang to question whether rewriting the past would evade responsibility for her decisions 41 43.
Iskandar then challenges her self-sacrificing model of kingship, leaving her visibly shaken. After Qin Shi Huang temporarily restores Berserker’s sanity, the Knight of the Lake reveals himself as Lancelot and defends her reign. His testimony restores her confidence, and Iskandar acknowledges that he judged too hastily 44.
Artoria’s team still loses the debate. Feng Xi explains that changing established history would create a Singularity rather than repair the present, potentially bringing it into conflict with Chaldea. Iskandar’s wish for a physical body is therefore judged safer. Artoria is left unable to refute that assessment; the passage does not establish that she abandons her wish 45.
Relationships
- Kiritsugu Emiya — Her identified Master and tactical ally. Their methods conflict, and she is surprised that someone so ruthless once dreamed of becoming a Hero of Justice 9 18 25.
- Irisviel von Einzbern — Trusted companion and battlefield support. Artoria entrusts her with watching her back; Irisviel provides healing and comforts her during painful memories of Gareth 16 34.
- Diarmuid — Respected knightly rival. Both explicitly describe their bond as mutual respect between opponents, and Diarmuid wishes for an uninterrupted formal duel with her 30 37.
- Lancelot / Knight of the Lake — Former Round Table knight whose identity initially remains hidden. He defends her honor and kingship after regaining his sanity 26 44.
- Gareth — A Round Table knight Artoria remembers as kind and well loved. Seeing her image brings back painful memories 34.
- Mordred — Her child, described in the text as her “son,” and the Rebellious Knight. Artoria recognizes her portrait immediately 11.
- Iskandar — Rival king whose beliefs sharply oppose hers. He interrupts her duels and challenges her ideals, but later concedes that his judgment of her reign was hasty 23 44.
- Qin Shi Huang — Challenges her desire to change the past, then enables Lancelot to speak by temporarily suppressing his madness with a Command Spell 43 44.
- Feng Xi — Calls her “Ahoge King,” criticizes the tactical mistakes shown in her duel, and explains the Singularity risk attached to her wish 7 16 17 45.
- Bluebeard / Gilles de Rais — Mistakes her for Jeanne d’Arc and directs his obsession toward her. Artoria despises his cruelty and unwanted attention 28 29 41.
Parallel-World Counterparts
These figures are identified as alternate King Arthurs, not later stages of this Artoria’s development 12.
| Counterpart | Distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Mysterious Heroine X | An Artoria from “Mysterious Space-Time,” pictured in a blue tracksuit and baseball cap 11 12. |
| Holy-lance Artoria | Chose Rhongomyniad rather than the holy sword. Her growth continued into adulthood, and prolonged use of the lance brought her close to a Divine Spirit 12. |
| Arthur Pendragon | A male King Arthur from a parallel world who wields the holy sword of the planet 12. |
- Nero Claudius and Jeanne d’Arc also resemble Artoria, but the system identifies them as separate historical figures rather than King Arthurs 11.
