Background / History
Previous Life and Wudang Upbringing
Feng Xi died of leukemia in his previous life. During his prolonged confinement to bed, anime became his main hobby, with Fate his particular favorite. He admired the Heroic Spirits who risked themselves to protect Pan-Human History. Having a younger brother reassured him that his parents would still have someone to care for them after his death 1.
He was reborn in China as an abandoned infant outside a Taoist temple on Mount Wudang. The Taoists took him in and raised him, introducing him to Thought Magecraft and Wudang martial arts 1 4.
Arrival in Fuyuki
At eighteen, Feng Xi traveled to Fuyuki to participate in the Fourth Holy Grail War in 1994. He obtained his master’s permission by describing the trip as a week of sightseeing. The recent appearance of the Type-Moon Communication System made him suspect that the war was approaching, although he did not know its exact starting date 1.
The system connected people and Heroic Spirits across parallel worlds, broadcasting quizzes that awarded or deducted Saint Quartz. Feng Xi discovered that his privilege as host doubled his rewards 1.
Saving Sakura
After recognizing Sakura in a car heading toward the Matou residence, Feng Xi raced ahead to intervene. He had previously considered rescuing her, but his age, travel restrictions, and uncertainty about the adoption date had prevented him from acting 3.
He incapacitated Zouken’s driver and held off Zouken with talismans while Sakura escaped. Unable to destroy Zouken with his current strength, he withdrew, only to discover that Sakura had disappeared. Tokiomi’s arrival to fight Zouken allowed Feng Xi to search for her 4 5.
Using a strand of Sakura’s hair, Feng Xi tracked her to Ryunosuke Uryu’s hidden basement. He rescued her and learned that Ryunosuke had followed him to the Matou residence out of curiosity. Concerned that future system rewards could enable Ryunosuke to escape imprisonment and kill again, Feng Xi killed him while Sakura was not looking. He then returned her to Aoi Tohsaka 5 6.
Forming His Servant Team
Feng Xi took Ryunosuke’s place in the war and summoned Caster Zhang Jue without a catalyst. He then used his Chaldea-version Heroic Spirit Summoning Card to summon Rider Red Hare. Although he explained the system to Zhang Jue, he concealed his position as its host 13 15.
The three rented a detached house because Red Hare’s size made hotel accommodation impractical. Zhang Jue began teaching Feng Xi Taoist arts and examined his unusual magical constitution 14.
Battle at the Docks
At the first-night gathering, Gilgamesh attacked Feng Xi over their repeated arguments in the group chat. Feng Xi survived by installing Red Hare’s power through his Class Card and defending himself with God Force 23 24.
He severed Gilgamesh’s right arm by combining Royal Brand’s sure-hit effect with a two-arrow feint. When Kariya sent the Knight of the Lake against Gilgamesh, Feng Xi withdrew from their fight 24.
Kiritsugu Emiya subsequently attempted to shoot him, but Zhang Jue intercepted the bullet. Feng Xi also blocked an attack from the Servant version of Kiritsugu with God Force’s bracers before taking cover from gunfire. The gathering eventually dispersed as police approached 25 26.
Alliance Against Gilgamesh
Rin Tohsaka later proposed teaming up against Gilgamesh. Feng Xi asked what he would gain, and Ishtar offered assistance in obtaining the Holy Grail. He accepted the arrangement 37.
During a later system gathering, Qin Shi Huang stopped Bluebeard from attacking Feng Xi. Feng Xi also judged the kings’ debate in Iskandar’s favor, explaining that Artoria’s proposed alteration of the past risked creating a Singularity 41 45.
Rin and Ishtar subsequently visited his home and supplied a Holy Grail-version Heroic Spirit Summoning Card to support their partnership, reminding him of his promise to help against Gilgamesh 50.
Appearance
Feng Xi is a young East Asian man whose appearance changes when he installs Red Hare’s power 1 23 24.
- Normal appearance: Black hair, black eyes, and a face described as not especially handsome but increasingly appealing with familiarity 1.
- Command Spells: A red pattern resembling a Chinese talisman 13.
- Installed appearance: Armor and a purple-gold crown; he remains human rather than becoming a horse or centaur 23 24.
- Combat attire: Wears the suit-form Royal Brand Mystic Code at the docks 23.
Personality
Feng Xi is protective toward children and willing to intervene despite personal danger. His rescue of Sakura places him against Zouken, while his defense of Kiritsugu’s dream shows that he respects the aspiration to become a righteous hero even when others ridicule it 3 4 18.
He is irreverent toward arrogance rather than authority in general. He repeatedly mocks Gilgamesh and refuses to acknowledge him as his king, but observes Taoist etiquette with Zhang Jue and respectfully greets Zhuge Liang. He also defends Qin Shi Huang against Gilgamesh’s insults 7 13 26 39.
His idealism coexists with pragmatism. He kills Ryunosuke to prevent further victims, keeps his host status secret even from his newly summoned Servant, and asks for a concrete benefit before agreeing to Rin’s alliance 5 13 37.
Abilities & Skills
Thought Magecraft
Feng Xi practices Chinese Thought Magecraft, which he prefers to call Taoist arts. Its underlying principle is to make rules accommodate the practitioner’s will—summarized as “words become law” 1 4.
- Willpower requirement: Even a wavering will can prevent its use 1.
- Casting limitation: His commonplace talismans require lengthy incantations, which he trained extensively to recite quickly and accurately 4.
- Mental strain: Prolonged use can leave him mentally drained 13.
- Awakened Will compatibility: The Mystic Code’s unshakable resolve directly benefits this will-dependent system 49 50.
Magic Circuits and Attribute Compatibility
Zhang Jue discovers that Feng Xi possesses 108 naturally occurring Magic Circuits, divided into 36 main circuits and 72 auxiliary circuits 14.
- Has no Magecraft attribute, described in Chinese terminology as an “unaffiliated spiritual root” 14.
- Can use magecraft of any attribute without attribute repulsion 14.
- Receives no attribute-specific bonuses in exchange for that flexibility 14.
- His circuits were present from birth, not purchased from the system shop 14.
Talisman Techniques
- Fire-Raising Spell: Creates flames that burn Zouken’s insects and obstruct their advance 4.
- Earth-Breaking Spell: Churns earth and stone, exposing insects concealed underground 4.
- Wind-Raising Spell: Produces strong winds that repel approaching insects 4.
- Immobilization Spell: Restricts a target’s movement; used against Zouken and Ryunosuke 4 5.
- Person-Finding Spell: Uses a target’s hair inside a folded paper crane to locate them 5.
- Invisibility Spell: Makes Feng Xi invisible, allowing him to enter Ryunosuke’s hideout unnoticed 5.
- Truth Talisman: Compels truthful answers after the target swallows it 5.
Movement and Martial Arts
- Divine Travel Technique: Greatly accelerates travel, described as allowing a thousand li per day. Feng Xi uses it to overtake Sakura’s car and follow his tracking talisman 3 5.
- Taijiquan: Uses redirection, pulling, elbow strikes, and a strike to the temple to incapacitate Zouken’s driver 4.
Heroic Spirit Installation
The Nameless Class Card uses Feng Xi’s body as a medium to temporarily obtain a Heroic Spirit’s power. Its blank state initially allows him to choose any consenting Heroic Spirit; he ultimately copies Red Hare 3 21 24.
- Grants access to the copied Heroic Spirit’s Noble Phantasm as well as their power 24.
- Allows him to use Red Hare’s Pseudo God Force alongside the genuine God Force 24.
- Pseudo God Force can be mounted on God Force and activated when fired to multiply its power; Feng Xi does not use that amplification during his feint against Gilgamesh 24.
True Name Discernment
A system-granted identification skill that activates through Feng Xi’s vision 50.
- Displays a Heroic Spirit’s name, class, alignment, parameters, skills, and Noble Phantasms 50.
- Successfully identifies Red Hare and Ishtar 50.
- Can activate automatically, as it does when Ishtar visits 50.
System Privileges and Foreknowledge
- Doubled rewards: Receives twice the normal rewards as the system’s host 1 3.
- System storage: Keeps bonus treasure chests out of sight until he can open them privately 22 50.
- Prior knowledge: Uses familiarity with Fate to identify characters, anticipate dangers, and answer quizzes 1 3 34.
- Limits: His knowledge is incomplete. He does not recognize Zhang Jue on sight because that Heroic Spirit had not been released before his transmigration, and he remains uncertain about some quiz answers 13 49.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- God Force: Lu Bu’s Noble Phantasm, designed with Chen Gong’s assistance. Has six forms: sickle, painted halberd, armguard, broadsword, twin maces, and bow 22.
- Royal Brand: Gifted by Zhang Jue. Improves reflexes and concentration and provides a sure-hit effect for one attack per day 22 23 24.
- Nameless Class Card: Originally blank; subsequently used to copy Red Hare’s power 3 24.
- Endless Money Bag: Noble Phantasm that produces currency, including gold and banknotes from any country 3.
- Super Spicy Mapo Tofu: Mystic Code producing a restorative dish. Eating it invigorates Feng Xi, who recognizes its usefulness for recovering from Thought Magecraft’s mental strain; it can be produced once daily 13 37.
- Awakened Will: Mystic Code that makes the user’s will unshakable 49 50.
- Gof’s Special Cuisine: Mystic Code producing one stamina-restoring meal each day 50.
- 500-Year Obsession: Single-use Mystic Code that seals an enemy Noble Phantasm and curses its wielder at the cost of sacrificing a Servant 50.
- Heroic Spirit Summoning Cards: Uses a Chaldea-version card to summon Red Hare; later receives a Holy Grail-version card from Ishtar 12 13 50.
Relationships
- Unnamed Wudang master — Raised and trained him. Feng Xi distinguishes a master’s lifelong, familial role from that of an ordinary teacher 1 8.
- Zhang Jue — Caster Servant, Taoist instructor, and protector. Teaches him without holding back, gives him Royal Brand, and intercepts Kiritsugu’s attempted shooting 14 23 25.
- Red Hare — Rider Servant and the source of his installed Heroic Spirit power 13 24.
- Sakura Tohsaka — Rescued child who becomes affectionate and noticeably more comfortable around him. Gives him her restorative special bento 5 37 38.
- Rin Tohsaka — Ally against Gilgamesh who approaches him because of their shared dislike of the King of Heroes 37 50.
- Ishtar — Alliance partner who offers help obtaining the Grail and later supplies a summoning card 37 50.
- Gilgamesh — Open antagonist. Their verbal clashes escalate into Gilgamesh’s attack at the docks and Feng Xi severing his arm 7 15 18 23 24.
- Zouken Matou — Enemy opposed during Sakura’s rescue. Later resents Feng Xi’s involvement in detecting his surveillance insects 4 38.
- Tokiomi Tohsaka — Fellow Grail War participant and Sakura’s father. Despite rescuing Sakura, Feng Xi initially avoids closer contact because they are prospective opponents 6.
- Kiritsugu Emiya — Feng Xi defends his heroic ideal, but Kiritsugu later classifies him as a threat and attempts to shoot him 18 25.
- Bluebeard — Seeks revenge for Ryunosuke’s death and attacks Feng Xi during a system gathering 7 41.
- Qin Shi Huang — Emperor whom Feng Xi defends in chat; later protects him from Bluebeard as one of his subjects 39 41.
Trivia
- Feng Xi can cook only fried rice—with inconsistent seasoning—and instant noodles, contributing to his reliance on eating out 37.
- The system fabricates a video of his failed summoning attempt and subsequent beating to make his presence among Grail War participants less suspicious. Although the footage is fabricated, the beating itself reflects an incident that really happened 8.
