Background / History
Defeat and Naming
Bubu originally possessed a stronger violet lightning dragon form. An unnamed individual on the twenty-eighth floor defeated him and knocked him down to the lower floors, reducing him to an injured hatchling. Xin Jiu subsequently helped him obtain Dragon Fodder Grass so that he could emerge from his egg 31 35.
While traveling with Xin Jiu, he rejected the proposed name “Puff-Puff,” worrying that other tower inhabitants would mock him once he recovered his true form. Xin Jiu instead named him Xin Bubu, which he accepted as the better alternative 31.
Qingming and the Fan Retrieval
Bubu led Xin Jiu to Qingming’s flower-filled valley and asked the fox to teach her a damage-absorption skill. Qingming made both the lesson and assistance with Bubu’s human transformation conditional on retrieving his stolen fan from Yin Lingzi 31.
Rather than remain safely with Qingming, Bubu insisted on accompanying Xin Jiu. During their journey, players attempted to kill her and seize him; he used Qingming’s temporary lightning incantation to kill one attacker, then imitated Xin Jiu by collecting the defeated players’ cards and items 32 33.
At Yin Lingzi’s grotto, Bubu defended Qingming against insults and reminded Yin Lingzi that tower laws restricted his actions. After Xin Jiu survived the encounter but failed to recover the fan, Bubu proposed disguising a Mushroom Person as a replacement. Qingming saw through the trick but nevertheless granted Xin Jiu the skill and helped Bubu take human form 35 37 38.
Qingming warned that the tower would soon descend into chaos and urged Bubu to stay in the valley. Bubu chose Xin Jiu instead, citing her achievement as the only person to clear the Great Selection and her inspector status as reasons to trust her 38.
Forest Labyrinth Escape
After leaving the valley, Bubu helped Xin Jiu confront the Human-Faced Tree. Because NPCs could not kill one another, he directed lightning beside it, frightening it long enough for Xin Jiu to strike. She also gave him a lightning-attribute Magic Element Fruit obtained from the tree 39 40.
Following several days of exploration and consumption of six different attribute fruits, Bubu unlocked enlargement. He carried Xin Jiu toward the exit, then descended when she spotted players trapped at the Bloodthirsty Wolf King’s altar. His wing-generated wind supported her during the ensuing battle 41 42.
When Doudou again encouraged players to kill Xin Jiu and take Bubu, the dragon killed several attackers with purple lightning. He then carried around a hundred survivors toward the exit, becoming increasingly exhausted under their combined weight. After landing, he shrank into human form, and Xin Jiu rewarded him with a bottle of Bear Honey 43.
Snake God Mountain Service Area
Before the service area opened, Bubu’s unease prompted him to advise Xin Jiu and nearby female players to spend their points. The warning proved valuable when Snake God Mountain reset every player’s balance to one thousand points 44 45.
At the Yellow Springs Inn, Xin Jiu presented him as her younger brother and invoked Nine Provinces regulations granting free accommodation to children under six traveling with guardians. Heavenly punishment forced the inn manager, She Ling, to accept the exemption 47.
Bubu later warned Xin Jiu to conceal her inspector status from the dangerous local NPCs. With only one protective inn waist token between them, he traveled outside as a palm-sized dragon hidden in her coat pocket. He remained with her when she entered the “One, Two, Three, Freeze” challenge 48 50.
Appearance
Bubu can switch between a small dragon and a young human boy, and later gains a much larger dragon form 38 39 41.
- Small dragon: Purple, winged, and horned, with a long tail; small enough to perch on Xin Jiu’s head or shoulder and fit inside her coat pocket 32 33 39 48.
- Human form: Resembles a boy of about four, with very fair skin, fluffy short black hair, and clear violet eyes. A pale-gold, dragon-scale-shaped mark briefly appears on his forehead, and he wears white-and-gold Daoist robes 38.
- Enlarged form: Approximately three stories tall, with gleaming purple scales and purple eyes 41.
- Expressive features: His horns redden faintly when Yin Lingzi angers him; in human form, he bares two pointed canine teeth when snapping at curious players 35 43.
Personality
Bubu is affectionate and protective toward Xin Jiu. He insists on joining her despite danger and is prepared to expend his limited lightning uses to defend her even if she becomes angry. Later, he pushes himself to carry the labyrinth’s survivors because he does not want her to look down on him 32 33 43.
He quickly picks up Xin Jiu’s opportunistic habits. After watching her take an opponent’s skill card, he gathers more loot himself; he also devises the fake-fan scheme, confidently expecting Qingming’s affection to spare him any consequences 33 37.
Despite that mischievousness, Bubu remains sensitive to praise and rejection. He is hurt when Xin Jiu asks him to change back shortly after admiring his human appearance, and he becomes tearful after Qingming sends them out of the valley 39. Bear Honey is a reliable source of enthusiasm: he repeatedly asks for more and becomes satisfied after receiving an entire bottle following the escape 37 43.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Breath
Bubu spits purple lightning capable of killing players 33 43.
- His first demonstrated bolt is as thick as an arm and kills its target immediately 33.
- Qingming’s original emergency incantation has three uses 33.
- He uses lightning again against the Human-Faced Tree and later attackers, but no revised use limit is stated 40 43.
- Skills belonging to players he kills automatically pass to Xin Jiu 43.
Transformation and Enlargement
Qingming enables Bubu to take human form; Bubu can subsequently return to his small dragon body at will 38 39.
- His human appearance will gradually mature as he levels up 38.
- His small form allows him to hide inside Xin Jiu’s pocket 48.
- Enlargement makes him roughly three stories tall and allows him to transport riders 41.
- Carrying around a hundred people severely strains him, leaving him breathless after landing 43.
Flight and Wing-Generated Wind
Bubu flies using his wings; enlargement greatly increases both his carrying capacity and the force of his wingbeats 32 41.
- In his early hatchling state, his flight is slow and clumsy enough for Doudou to spot him while he follows Xin Jiu 32.
- His enlarged form produces gusts strong enough to nearly blow Xin Jiu away 41.
- He deliberately generates fierce wind to assist her against the Bloodthirsty Wolf King 42.
Sensing and Tower Knowledge
Bubu can detect unusual auras and supplies information about tower inhabitants and rules 31 32 35.
- Senses Qingming’s presence and the lingering aura of ancient ruins 31 32.
- Recognizes that Yin Lingzi’s handsome appearance is an altered exterior rather than his true form 34.
- Knows that tower laws restrict high-level NPCs and prohibit NPCs from killing one another 35 40.
- Correctly anticipates danger surrounding the service area, though he describes his warning about spending points as intuition rather than knowledge of the exact rule 44 45.
Restrictions
- NPC combat: Unable to kill the Human-Faced Tree directly, Bubu frightens it with a nearby lightning strike so Xin Jiu can finish the fight 40.
- Player combat: Tower rules do not prevent him from killing players 43.
- No player points: As an NPC, he has no points of his own to pay for accommodation 47.
Relationships
- Xin Jiu — Rescuer, namer, and traveling companion. He trusts her to protect him and eventually help him take revenge; she feeds him, protects his identity, and treats him as her younger brother when securing accommodation 31 36 38 43 47.
- Qingming — An older-brother figure whom Bubu calls “Brother Qingming.” Qingming teaches him an emergency incantation, helps him take human form, and offers him shelter from the tower’s coming chaos 31 33 38.
- Yin Lingzi — Antagonistic acquaintance. Bubu mocks his true appearance and defends Qingming against him; Yin Lingzi taunts Bubu about being reduced to a defective hatchling 34 35.
- Doudou — Repeatedly incites other players to kill Xin Jiu and seize Bubu. Bubu kills several participants in the later attack, while Xin Jiu leaves Doudou behind 33 43.
- Mushroom People — Recruited for Bubu’s fake-fan scheme. They initially fear Qingming, but agree to help after tasting Xin Jiu’s Bear Honey 37.
Notable Quotes
“I’m going even if it’s dangerous.” — Insisting on accompanying Xin Jiu 32
“She was the only one to clear the Great Selection, and she even gained inspector status. I believe in her.” — Explaining his decision to leave Qingming’s protection 38
Trivia
- Bubu becomes a merchandising sensation in the Nine Provinces without knowing it. A major plush manufacturer produces 30,000 blind boxes, which sell out within ten seconds 41.
- Regular plush editions depict his small-dragon poses; the secret edition depicts his human form with dragon horns. The original price is 228, while resale prices exceed 1,000 41.
- Bear Gummies intended for players have little effect on him, though Xin Jiu feeds him some during the exhausting evacuation flight 43.
