Background / History
Yin Lingzi is an ancient demon god with the ability to foresee the future. He has a reputation for deserting an ancient battlefield after foreseeing its outcome. Xin Jiu deliberately invokes this story to humiliate him; his response occurs during a game that requires him to answer “Of course,” rather than as an unrestricted account of the battle 35.
According to Qingming, Yin Lingzi was supposed to stay on the tower’s top floor but somehow descended. Their dispute involves exchanged thefts: Qingming accuses him of stealing his treasured fan, while Yin Lingzi claims he took it only because Qingming stole his treasure first. The nature of that treasure is not revealed 31 36.
Appearance
- Adopted appearance: Long, silvery-white hair, fair skin, clear pale-green eyes, and loosely worn black robes exposing much of his chest 34.
- First encounter: Reclines on a pure-white jade seat beneath a huge ginkgo tree inside his damp, moss-covered grotto 34.
- True form: A firefly. Bubu calls his real form ugly, and the narration confirms that other races once mocked his appearance after he took human form 34 35.
- Changeable features: His handsome appearance is not fixed; Bubu remarks that he has “changed his skin again” 34.
Personality
Yin Lingzi is arrogant and contemptuous of humans, whom he describes as lowly, greedy, and insignificant. He initially treats Xin Jiu’s challenge as entertainment and dismisses Bubu’s weakened hatchling form, although he would not have provoked the dragon at its full strength 34 35.
His vanity makes insults about his original appearance especially effective. Having paid heavily to escape ridicule, he hates references to his true form and cannot bear being called ugly. Nevertheless, he suppresses his anger long enough to continue the question game because he expects its punishment to settle the confrontation 35.
He can quickly recover his outward composure. After Xin Jiu exposes his illusion and notices his fear at the mention of the tower’s top, he resumes his languid manner rather than explaining himself 36.
Abilities & Skills
Foresight
- Can glimpse the future; both the quest description and narration identify this ability 34 35.
- His alleged desertion from the ancient battlefield is associated with a prediction he made before the battle’s outcome 35.
Illusions
- Manifests an image of himself in the grotto while his true body remains elsewhere. The bees’ stingers pass through this image without harming him 36.
- The ginkgo tree and jade platform disappear alongside his image when he leaves 36.
- Exposing the deception grants Xin Jiu the hidden achievement “See through Yin Lingzi’s illusions” and 50,000 points 37.
- His invitation to the twenty-fifth floor leads Xin Jiu to suspect that his true body is there; its location is not confirmed in the provided chapters 36.
Appearance Changing
- Can alter his appearance at will through a technique acquired at enormous cost 35.
- Uses this ability to conceal the appearance for which other races previously mocked him 34 35.
Three-Question Punishment
- Uses a three-question exchange to bring down punishment whose severity depends on luck 35.
- Accepts Xin Jiu’s proposed rule that both participants must answer only “Of course,” since his real objective is completing the exchange 35.
- Xin Jiu refuses to answer his final question, preventing the exchange from concluding as intended 35 36.
Monster Summoning
| Summon | Capabilities | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Red-eyed spider | As large as an African elephant; possesses powerful forelegs and corrosive bodily fluid 35 36. | Xin Jiu kills it with her bayonet after using Qingming’s temporary defensive skill to withstand its attack 36. |
| Bee swarm | Twenty bees, each roughly half a person’s height, capable of firing venomous stingers as thick as a forearm 36. | Xin Jiu enslaves the queen with Let’s Blow a Kiss and turns the entire swarm against him 36. |
Restrictions
- Bubu warns that tower laws and the administrator prohibit Yin Lingzi from attacking freely. Yin Lingzi neither confirms nor denies the warning 35.
- During the grotto encounter, he remains seated and fights through summons. Xin Jiu uses this behavior to deduce that his true body is absent 36.
Equipment / Items
- Qingming’s treasured fan — Taken from Qingming, allegedly in retaliation for the theft of Yin Lingzi’s own treasure. He leaves without returning it, and Xin Jiu and Bubu cannot find it in the grotto 31 36 37.
Relationships
- Qingming — Antagonistic acquaintance and party to the treasure dispute. Despite their hostility, Qingming uses surviving an encounter with Yin Lingzi as a test of Xin Jiu’s ability 31 36 38.
- Xin Jiu — Human challenger who deliberately provokes him, defeats his summons, and exposes his illusion. He threatens to kill her and invites her to confront him on the twenty-fifth floor 34 35 36.
- Bubu — Recognizes his disguises and mocks him throughout the encounter. Yin Lingzi threatens the weakened hatchling but would have avoided provoking its full dragon form 34 35.
- Human-Faced Tree — A subordinate who explicitly identifies Yin Lingzi as its master. Its insistence on asking three questions reminds Xin Jiu and Bubu of him 39.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Forest Labyrinth: Wrath of the God of Escape
Xin Jiu approaches Yin Lingzi to recover Qingming’s fan and accepts the hidden quest “Wrath of the God of Escape,” which requires raising his anger to 100%. She exploits his sensitivity about his battlefield reputation and true appearance, then defeats the monsters he sends against her 34 35 36.
Turning his own bee swarm against him finally fills the rage meter. The quest rewards Xin Jiu with Copy (SS-rank), which copies any one player’s skill, has a fifteen-day cooldown, and can be upgraded. This is Xin Jiu’s reward, not a demonstrated ability of Yin Lingzi 36.
Yin Lingzi withdraws after appearing to listen to an unheard message, leaving the fan dispute unresolved. Although Xin Jiu returns empty-handed, Qingming grants her his skill because surviving Yin Lingzi was his actual condition 36 37 38.
Abnormal NPC Report
After clearing the instance, Xin Jiu thinks of Yin Lingzi when the system asks whether she encountered abnormal NPC activity and answers “Yes.” Her report prompts notification of an administrator and a purge announcement for the Forest Labyrinth 44.
