Background / History
Raising Harry and Pursuing Revenge
After Harry’s parents died in the battle in which Voldemort disappeared, Sirius adopted his orphaned goddaughter. Dumbledore hoped that raising her would encourage Sirius to settle down, accept parental responsibilities, and eventually take a job. Instead, Sirius raised Harry while traveling to investigate James’s death and avenge him 22.
Sirius questioned how Voldemort had discovered James’s home in Godric’s Hollow, whether James had been betrayed, and why another couple had been present to fight Voldemort. His suspicion that Dumbledore might have arranged events steadily destroyed their trust 22.
During his investigation, Sirius killed former Death Eaters whom the Ministry had declared innocent. Because his victims included members of influential pure-blood families, he became a wanted criminal and a recurring target of the Daily Prophet. The newspaper portrayed him as a terrorist whose name could frighten children into silence 22 23.
The Paris Killing
Sirius killed a distant relative of the Malfoy family in Paris, attracting extensive newspaper coverage. Harry, who had acted as his lookout, was arrested in connection with the incident. According to her, Sirius planned to infiltrate the Ministry to rescue her, but Dumbledore secured her release first 5 23 29.
Dumbledore warned that such a rescue would have made Harry a fugitive alongside Sirius. He also told her that Sirius’s victims had friends in several countries’ Ministries, making further incidents increasingly dangerous 5.
Knockturn Alley Meeting
Before Harry’s first Hogwarts term, Sirius arranged to meet her in Knockturn Alley. Ministry surveillance prevented him from returning to the Black ancestral home, while Aurors followed Harry in hopes of finding him. She used Persephone’s gargoyle statue to create a disturbance at Flourish and Blotts and escape her pursuers 26 27.
Harry brought Herman to the meeting. After joking that Herman might be her boyfriend, Sirius realized the boy feared being killed to keep the encounter secret. He apologized for Harry’s prank drawing Herman into the Ministry’s investigation and refused to leave him alone in Knockturn Alley 27 28.
Sirius then took them to Borgin and Burkes. With Harry’s assistance, he captured Borgin and interrogated him about Dark wizards and dark creatures entering Britain. After obtaining information, he paid for gifts from the shop and escorted Herman to Kramer Goblin Supplies Shop 28 29.
Investigating the Dark Creatures
Sirius initially suspected that the influx of vampires and werewolves signaled Voldemort’s return. Borgin’s information instead pointed to a gathering called jointly by vampire families and prominent werewolves. Sirius considered the source credible because Borgin’s business partner, Caractacus Burke, was himself a vampire 29 30.
Once he believed the gathering unrelated to Voldemort, Sirius dismissed it as the Ministry’s problem and welcomed the possibility that it would distract officials from pursuing him. He later left Harry and Herman after escorting them out of Knockturn Alley 30 33.
Shortly before the Hogwarts Express departed, a break-in at Gringotts diverted the Aurors. Harry reported that Sirius had returned home without interference the previous day 35.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and thin, with a lean face and slightly sunken cheeks 27.
- Hair: Untidy 27.
- Eyes: Dark gray, with a brooding expression 27.
- Overall impression: Haggard but handsome, retaining a distinctive elegance and charm 27.
- Clothing: Uses a hooded robe to conceal his identity during the Knockturn Alley meeting 27 28.
Personality
Sirius is driven by loyalty to James and an unresolved need to uncover the truth behind his death. He rejects the Ministry’s acquittals of former Death Eaters and pursues revenge outside the law. Although he still considers Arthur Weasley and other Order of the Phoenix members good people, he regards their adherence to Dumbledore’s ideals as foolish and no longer considers them worth working with 22 36.
His threatening public reputation contrasts with his teasing manner toward Harry and his consideration for Herman. He apologizes for exposing Herman to official scrutiny, offers him a gift, and helps him travel safely through Knockturn Alley. That courtesy coexists with considerable brutality: he tortures Borgin for information, then politely thanks him and pays for the shop’s merchandise 28 29 33.
As a guardian, Sirius is affectionate but unreliable. He gives Harry the Black family vault and buys her school presents, yet forgets her birthday and involves her in dangerous revenge operations. He nevertheless remembers Hogwarts as the setting of the happiest days of his life, helping inspire Harry’s enthusiasm for attending 5 28 29.
Abilities & Skills
Spellcasting and Interrogation
Sirius uses magic to restrain and intimidate targets, exploiting his reputation to make threats more effective 28.
- Produces ropes from his wand to suspend Borgin upside down, then releases him afterward 28 29.
- Conjures blue flames at his wand tip while threatening Borgin; the passage does not identify the spell 28.
- Uses painful hexes during the interrogation. Although he threatens Unforgivable Curses, none are shown being cast 28.
- Coordinates with Harry through a concealed hand signal before their ambush 28.
Magical Items and Dark Creatures
Sirius recognizes the functions of unusual magical objects and has practical knowledge of vampires 26 29 30.

- Identifies Borgin’s supposedly cursed playing cards as an alchemical device for controlling the deal 29.
- Knows that becoming a vampire requires a complicated, costly ritual rather than a simple bite 30.
- Acknowledges that his vampire knowledge is limited and credits Lupin with teaching him what he knows 30.
