Background / History
Earlier Students and Voldemort’s Defeat
Before becoming headmaster, Dumbledore visited an orphanage to recruit Tom Riddle. That experience later shapes his approach to Herman: another exceptionally gifted orphan whose calculated use of magic raises concerns about his future. Rather than repeat his earlier intimidation tactics, Dumbledore chooses a different form of instruction 2 3.
Dumbledore publicly announced that the Longbottoms sacrificed themselves to defeat, rather than kill, Voldemort. His precise wording left room for the belief that Voldemort remained alive and might return 37.
After Harry was orphaned, Dumbledore allowed Sirius to raise her, hoping that responsibility for a child would help his former student settle down. He intended to find Sirius a job if that happened. Instead, Sirius investigated James’s death and pursued revenge against former Death Eaters. His suspicions about Dumbledore’s possible involvement in the circumstances surrounding James’s death steadily damaged their trust 5 22.
Recruiting Herman
In 1991, Dumbledore personally visits St. Chris’s Children’s Home in Cokeworth to recruit Herman. He brings Ministry-prepared Muggle documents, but Director Margery remains suspicious of Hogwarts’s interest in an orphan from her institution. Dumbledore falsely claims that Herman’s parents attended Hogwarts and uses an enchanted photograph of Harry and her parents to support the story 2.
During their private conversation, he identifies Herman’s controlled accidental magic as a primitive form of Transfiguration. He praises the boy’s precision while worrying that his ability to use magic for personal advantage could lead him astray. Nevertheless, the orphanage’s affectionate environment and Herman’s lack of cruelty toward the other children convince him that Herman differs significantly from Tom 3.
Dumbledore gives Herman his acceptance letter, explains Diagon Alley and wizarding currency, and tells him that orphaned students can receive Ministry funding. He then takes Herman to London by Apparition 3 4 6.
Harley’s Release
At the Ministry, Dumbledore meets Snape, who has been waiting three hours while he handles Herman’s recruitment. Dumbledore then takes Herman to the Wizengamot’s courtroom and detention area, using the visit to impress upon him the consequences of misusing magic 4.
Dumbledore presents a Wizengamot bail order for Harley and serves as her guarantor. He explains that a Hogwarts professor’s French Ministry connections made her return to Britain possible; otherwise, she would have faced trial in France. He rejects Sirius’s proposed rescue as a course that would have made Harley a fugitive 4 5.
Concluding that Harley can no longer continue accompanying Sirius’s violent activities, Dumbledore gives her a Hogwarts acceptance letter. He also presents the family photograph as a birthday gift, credits Hagrid with finding it, and asks her to tell Sirius that bloodshed cannot end hatred. Afterward, he assigns Snape to take Herman shopping for school supplies 5.
Hogwarts Express Attack
When vampires attack the Hogwarts Express, Marlene informs Dumbledore. He arrives with Fawkes just as Herman’s grenades are about to explode, apparently slows the surrounding action, restores the grenades to an intact state, and suspends them safely beside him 41 45.
Dumbledore confronts the vampire leader Gori over the intrusion into wizarding education. Gori claims to be seeking a child prophesied to end the vampire and werewolf bloodline curse. Initially dismissive of the prophecy, Dumbledore becomes more receptive when Gori names Grindelwald as its source 45 46.
He confiscates Herman’s grenades, pistol, and spare magazines. When Neville suggests that he may be the prophesied child, Dumbledore privately remains uncertain and publicly cautions the students against placing too much weight on prophecies. He restores the damaged compartment and gently returns its occupants to their seats 46 47.
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly man with a tall, slender figure and a composed, old-fashioned bearing 2 45.
- Eyes: Bright, gemstone-blue, behind half-moon spectacles 2.
- Hair and beard: Long and silvery-white 2 45.
- Muggle clothing: A dated, visibly worn long trench coat during his visit to the orphanage 2.
- Wizarding clothing: Moon-white robes when he arrives aboard the Hogwarts Express 45.
Personality
Dumbledore values character more highly than magical strength. His concern for Herman is not simply whether the boy can become powerful, but whether his intelligence and talent will develop without repeating Tom Riddle’s path. He deliberately recognizes the differences between the two children rather than treating their similar backgrounds as proof of similar destinies 3.
His kindness coexists with calculated deception. He manipulates Margery’s perception to secure Herman’s admission and uses Herman’s fear of wizarding law to establish a shared secret. The Ministry visit likewise doubles as a practical warning about the consequences of magical misconduct 2 3 4 18.
He remains patient with Harley’s irreverence and Snape’s anger, often answering tension with teasing or calm reassurance. His opposition to Sirius’s revenge is firm, but his attempt to reform Sirius through parental responsibility proves unsuccessful 4 5 22.
Dumbledore is skeptical of prophecy, arguing that many supposed visions are delusions or are misunderstood. Grindelwald is a notable exception: hearing his name evokes complicated emotions and leads Dumbledore to acknowledge that the prophecy could be reliable 46 47.
Abilities & Skills
Transfiguration
Dumbledore is explicitly described as a master of Transfiguration, with a particular fondness for students gifted in the subject 3.
- Recognizes Herman’s self-taught magic as primitive Transfiguration and accurately assesses his exceptional control 3.
- Restores shattered windows, damaged seating, and scattered belongings throughout a wrecked train compartment 47.
Confundus Charm
Dumbledore can alter a Muggle’s perceptions with exceptional subtlety 18.
- Makes Director Margery accept Harry’s family photograph as a picture of Herman and his parents 2 18.
- Prevents her from noticing the photograph’s moving figures; Herman later regards this unobtrusive control as far beyond his own 3 18.
Apparent Temporal Slowing and Explosive Containment
During his arrival aboard the train, the surrounding action slows almost to a standstill while Dumbledore continues moving normally. The precise mechanism is not identified 45.
- Acts while shattered glass, Gori’s reaction, and exploding grenade fragments appear dramatically slowed 45.
- Sends fragments back along their trajectories, reconstructing the grenades before enclosing them in blue light 45.
- Keeps the explosives suspended and removes Herman’s concealed pistol and magazines without approaching him 46.
Transportation and Levitation
Dumbledore uses several forms of magical travel and movement 4 5 46.
- Apparition: Takes Herman directly from the orphanage to London; the journey leaves Herman severely nauseated 4.
- Floo travel: Departs through a Ministry fireplace after handing Herman over to Snape 5.
- Levitation: Hovers several feet above the train compartment floor while confronting Gori 46.
Werewolf-Curse Research
Dumbledore has spent years studying the werewolf curse because one of his students is a werewolf 46.
- Has achieved several breakthroughs involving the Wolfsbane Potion 46.
- Still does not know how to eradicate the curse completely, making Gori’s claim about a possible cure significant to him 46.
Equipment / Items
- Wand — Plain and old-fashioned, resembling a withered branch; used during the containment of Herman’s grenades. Its wood and core are not identified 45.
- Half-moon spectacles — A distinguishing part of his appearance 2.
- Family photograph — A moving photograph of Harry and her parents, temporarily used to deceive Margery before being given to Harley for her birthday 2 5.
- Confiscated weapons — Takes custody of Herman’s grenades, pistol, and spare magazines after the train attack 46.
Relationships
- Herman Horace — Personally recruits him, recognizes his Transfiguration potential, and tries to guide his moral development. Later rescues him aboard the train and confiscates his weapons 2 3 4 46.
- Harley / Harry — Arranges her release on bail, gives her a Hogwarts acceptance letter, and attempts to separate her future from Sirius’s revenge campaign 5.
- Sirius Black — Former student whose adoption of Harry Dumbledore hoped would encourage responsibility. Sirius’s suspicions and killings erode their relationship 5 22.
- Snape — Hogwarts colleague who openly challenges Dumbledore over delays in Harley’s release. Dumbledore later entrusts Herman’s school shopping to him 4 5.
- Tom Riddle / Voldemort — Former orphanage recruit whose development serves as a warning when Dumbledore evaluates Herman 2 3.
- Grindelwald — A figure from Dumbledore’s past whose name provokes nostalgia and complicated emotion. Dumbledore considers his prophetic ability credible 46.
- Fawkes — Phoenix companion who accompanies his arrival on the train, burns away Gori’s black mist, and responds closely to Dumbledore’s changing mood 45 46.
- Neville Longbottom — A student whose existing prophetic responsibilities concern Dumbledore; he is reluctant to assume that the bloodline-curse prophecy also belongs to Neville 47.
