Background / History

Human Experiments and Defection

Orochimaru cooperated with Danzo’s underground human experimentation program to obtain Hashirama Cells. He understood that exposure would leave him as the scapegoat: in his view, Sarutobi would never abandon Danzo, so someone else of sufficient standing had to take responsibility 30.

Haruma encountered him at one of the laboratories. Orochimaru initially tried to kill the intruder, but stopped after discovering that Haruma possessed a space-time technique and could escape at will. Haruma predicted his defection, offered future cooperation, and left him an unusually shaped golden shuriken 30 31.

Sarutobi subsequently announced Orochimaru’s defection and assigned him responsibility for the experiments. The explanation failed to reassure Konoha’s clans, whose leaders doubted that laboratories and precision medical equipment could have operated inside the village without assistance from its leadership 33.

Akatsuki and Trade with Haruma

Orochimaru joined Akatsuki, initially without a partner or mission. His attempt to obtain an Uchiha vessel later brought him into conflict with Itachi, whose Mangekyō defeated him 68 106 107.

When Haruma visited his hideout under the identity Fugo, he offered research materials, bloodlines, dōjutsu, and techniques in exchange for money or newly developed ninjutsu. Orochimaru tested the arrangement by paying thirty million for a three-tomoe Sharingan and a small sample of Hashirama Cells. Despite Kabuto confirming their authenticity, he insisted on further experiments before committing more money 70 71.

Kazekage Disguise and the Konoha Crush

While preparing to attack Konoha during the joint Chunin Exams, Orochimaru attempted to ambush the apparent Kazekage, Rasa. His target was actually Fugaku, who avoided the attack with a clone and voluntarily handed over the Kazekage hat, clothing, and office security information. The transfer was Haruma’s promised gift in repayment for surgery Orochimaru had performed 96.

During the exams, Orochimaru targeted Sasuke as a potential Uchiha vessel. He fought Sasuke, Haku, and Kimimaro, falsely claiming that Fugo had ordered him to test Sasuke. Haruma intervened before he could place a Cursed Seal on Sasuke, then warned that he could treat injuries to the soul 104 105 106 107.

Orochimaru entered the final stage of his invasion disguised as the Kazekage. Inside the rooftop barrier, he revealed himself to Sarutobi and explained that destroying Konoha would provoke war, stimulate ninjutsu development, and produce stronger shinobi. He used reanimated Hashirama and Tobirama against his former teacher 128.

Sarutobi sealed the reanimated Hokage, then sacrificed himself to take the souls of Orochimaru’s hands. The Konoha Crush failed, leaving Orochimaru unable to use ninjutsu. When Jiraiya threatened to imprison him, Haruma intervened in exchange for a substantial gift from Kabuto 130 132.

Recruitment into the Company

Orochimaru offered to revive Tsunade’s lover and younger brother in exchange for healing his hands, but she refused. During the ensuing confrontation, Sasori attacked him as an Akatsuki deserter. With his ninjutsu unavailable, Orochimaru and Kabuto were overwhelmed until Haruma’s allies protected them 145 146 148 150.

Shisui publicly described their withdrawal as taking Orochimaru into Kirigakure’s custody. In private, Orochimaru agreed to join Haruma’s team and asked whether he could see the future. Haruma confirmed the claim and explained why replacing damaged soul fragments through grafting would not provide a lasting cure 153 154.

After Orochimaru gathered his personnel and assets, Haruma formally appointed him head of the innovation department and restored his hands. Orochimaru’s submission was sincere at that point: he wanted to witness the changes Haruma would bring to the Shinobi World 154 167 170.

Company Research

The company provided Orochimaru with a first-basement laboratory and one hundred thousand employee points, although Haruma confiscated his previous possessions. Points could purchase research materials and techniques or fund missions to capture hostile shinobi. Orochimaru immediately had Kabuto select ten human specimens 170 173.

He prioritized studying Hidan’s constitution over leaving the laboratory. His eventual reincarnation formula preserved Hidan’s immortality, and an injection of Hashirama Cells added rapid regeneration 177 191.

Orochimaru also developed a treatment for Kimimaro using Hidan’s and Hashirama’s cells. Haruma supplied his own cells for further research, and Orochimaru later operated on Kimimaro to implant them into his bones. The successful fusion cured Kimimaro’s Kekkei Genkai Disease and raised his strength beyond Kage Level 191 235 236.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Shoulder-length black hair, golden slit pupils, and purple eyeshadow extending from the corners of his eyes toward his nose 30.
  • Initial clothing: Black ninja clothing and a Konoha forehead protector during his first meeting with Haruma 30.
  • Distinguishing feature: A long, flexible tongue that he frequently flicks out or runs over his lips 30 70.
  • Sealed hands: His hands become purplish-black after Sarutobi’s final attack and are later kept bandaged; their normal color returns when Haruma restores his soul 132 145 170.
  • Disguise: Uses a human-skin mask to impersonate the Kazekage during the invasion of Konoha 128.

Personality

Orochimaru is driven by the pursuit of immortality, the truth of life, and the mysteries of ninjutsu. Research opportunities outweigh political loyalty: he knowingly accepts the danger of cooperating with Danzo because access to Hashirama Cells is too valuable to refuse. After joining Haruma, he declines an opportunity to leave the laboratory because Hidan’s undying body interests him more 30 177.

He is cautious and analytical when assessing unfamiliar techniques or potential partners. Against Haruma, he quickly switches to attacks suited to the narrow laboratory passage and investigates possible teleportation markers. During their first transaction, he accepts Kabuto’s medical assessment but still checks for concealed traps or tracking methods 30 71.

His scientific curiosity coexists with a ruthless disregard for others’ lives. He conducts human experiments, seeks living vessels, and argues that war is desirable because it accelerates the growth of techniques and talented shinobi. That composure breaks when Sarutobi threatens his soul and permanently deprives him of ninjutsu 71 128 132 173.

Orochimaru’s eventual loyalty to Haruma rests on both research access and fascination. Initially skeptical of prophecy, he becomes convinced that Haruma possesses foreknowledge and chooses to participate in the future Haruma is creating 106 132 153 170.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Techniques and Summoning

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Launches venomous snakes from his sleeves with enough force to blast a hole in a rock wall 30.
  • Formation of Ten Thousand Snakes: Releases large numbers of snakes from his mouth and clothing to overwhelm an area 30.
  • Reconnaissance: Uses snakes to detect living opponents and search for hidden enemies or ambushes 30 96.
  • Giant snake summons: Summons a hundred-meter-long snake against Kimimaro and uses pythons to obstruct Haku. Giant pythons also participate in the attack on Konoha 104 105 128.
  • Manda: Fights from Manda’s head during the clash with Sasori, though Sasori’s needle barrage penetrates the summon’s head 148.

Body Manipulation

  • Serpentine movement: Stretches and bends his body around a tree to evade Kimimaro’s bone attack 104.
  • Extensible neck and tongue: Reaches Sasuke from dozens of meters away and attacks from underground with his tongue 105.
  • Internal storage: Swallows the beaker containing his purchased Sharingan and Hashirama Cells; also retrieves weapons through his mouth 71 96 130.

Living Corpse Reincarnation and Survival

  • Body replacement: Takes over a living vessel while retaining his own soul. The vessel’s soul is consumed within his mental world rather than grafted onto his own 71 154.
  • Physical restoration: Can replace a body suffering from missing limbs, organ damage, or other physical ailments 154.
  • Soul limitation: Reincarnation alone cannot replace the soul portions sealed from his hands. Haruma explains that repeatedly grafting incompatible soul fragments would eventually destabilize the remaining soul 153 154.
  • Cursed Seal Reincarnation: Forms part of the layered survival methods Haruma identifies after Orochimaru obtains his enhanced body 191.
  • Regeneration: His Hashirama-enhanced reincarnated body heals a scalpel incision within seconds while retaining Hidan’s immortal trait 191.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Reanimation: Uses the forbidden technique to summon Hashirama and Tobirama against Sarutobi 128.
  • Controlled consciousness: Suppresses the reanimated Hokage’s awareness during the battle 170.
  • Reanimated bodies: Recover bodily damage and possess inexhaustible chakra 130.
  • Countermeasure: Sarutobi removes both Hokage’s souls with the Reaper Death Seal 130.

Elemental Ninjutsu and Combat Analysis

  • Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Uses an A-rank wind technique alongside his snake swarm to cover an underground passage 30.
  • Defensive Earth Release: Raises thick earthen walls that withstand Sasuke’s flames and Haku’s ice needles 104.
  • Binding Technique: Restrains Sasuke after escaping underground 105.
  • Tactical adaptation: Separates Kimimaro from the other fighters with a summon, then pressures Sasuke and Haku directly 104.

Medical Research and Technique Development

  • Surgical expertise: Operates on Kimimaro and recognizes that his Kekkei Genkai Disease makes him unsuitable as a reincarnation vessel 104.
  • Cursed Seal research: Uses Jūgo’s natural-energy-based sage transformation as the source of the Cursed Seal 170.
  • Cellular engineering: Combines Hidan’s constitution with Hashirama Cells and develops treatments for Kimimaro 191.
  • Haruma-cell implantation: Performs the surgery that allows Kimimaro’s body to fuse with Haruma’s cells 235 236.
