Background / History
Switched at Birth
Wen Ruohuai was the Wen Family’s biological son, but a nurse deliberately switched him with Wen Nan after accepting money from the family’s enemies. He grew up with Wen Nan’s biological parents in a county town, while Wen Nan was raised as the Wen Family’s young master 4 20.
As a child, Wen Ruohuai attended school during the day and helped his adoptive family sell barbecue at night. He remembered waiting two months to afford a third-grade school uniform and being mocked for poverty and eating expired bread. He became a strong exam-taker but had little opportunity for exercise 4 13.
His adoptive parents later received compensation when their house was demolished for redevelopment. According to Wen Nan, they left Wen Ruohuai both the replacement housing and the money 20.
Return to the Wen Family
Wen Ruohuai returned to the Wen Family on Wen Nan’s birthday. Wen Nan believed the timing was deliberate, intended to draw everyone’s attention away from him 3.
After his return, the shares, companies, and cars previously held by Wen Nan were transferred into Wen Ruohuai’s name. The family also bought him a record company, allowing him to enter entertainment without following the demanding trainee route. He signed with Zhang Yin’s company, where Zhang Yin recognized his talent 6 8 20.
Despite receiving compensation and affection from both sets of parents, Wen Ruohuai remained dissatisfied. He regarded his lost childhood as something his restored wealth and family position could not repay 17.
Feud on *Love 5*
Wen Ruohuai’s conflict with Wen Nan repeatedly disrupted Love 5. Their opening confrontation forced Director Wang to suspend the livestream. During the mountain outing, they competed despite both lagging behind the other guests; Wen Nan overtook him near the summit, winning a tent while Wen Ruohuai received a thermos 1 4 6.
After finding a praying mantis leg in his lunch, Wen Ruohuai confronted Wen Nan and fought with him. Their eldest brother subsequently summoned both men home for punishment 6 7.
Wen Ruohuai also claimed that Wen Nan’s former fiancé now belonged to him. When Wen Nan raised the engagement in front of the cast, Wen Ruohuai disputed his account and blamed him for having enjoyed the benefits of the switched identities 12 19.
Wen Nan then disclosed the police investigation into the baby switch and the property his biological parents had left Wen Ruohuai. Wen Ruohuai said he had not known the truth, dropped the garlic he was holding, and ran outside 20.
Conflict with Xie Zhuzhou
Xie Zhuzhou overheard Wen Ruohuai admitting that he had hired paid online commenters—a “water army”—and spread damaging material about Wen Nan. Wen Ruohuai justified this as revenge for his upbringing. Mistaking Xie Zhuzhou for a staff member or paparazzo, he tried to secure his silence and threatened to have him removed from production 13.
The next morning, Wen Ruohuai offered to invest in Director Li’s script if Director Wang expelled Xie Zhuzhou. The attempt failed: Xie Zhuzhou was a contracted guest and that day’s hidden “boyfriend.” Wen Ruohuai’s subsequent insult toward the production team destroyed the goodwill he had built with his seniors 14.
He continued approaching Xie Zhuzhou to find out what he knew, while interpreting Xie’s indifference as contempt. Xie Zhuzhou’s helicopter arrival at the ski resort later made him fear that he had antagonized someone beyond the Wen Family’s ability to confront 19 41.
Skiing Incident and Public Humiliation
At the ski resort, Wen Ruohuai collided with Wen Nan, causing Wen Nan to lose control. Xie Zhuzhou intercepted him and guided him to safety. The incident prompted demands for accountability from Wen Nan’s fans and pressure on Director Wang from the Wen Family 42.
Xie Zhuzhou advised the director to give Wen Nan the footage and let the two settle the matter privately. Wen Nan retained the evidence and a cloud backup, preventing Wen Ruohuai from acting against him freely. Wen Ruohuai instead planned to spread allegations about Xie Zhuzhou’s relationships with Qin Fang and An Xinian beyond the campus network 43 55.
After witnessing Ji Wangyun, disguised as Xie Zhuzhou, overpower Qin Fang, Wen Ruohuai became afraid of confronting “Xie Zhuzhou” physically. He later tried a gentler approach: after falling on snowy ground, he asked Xie to help him up and offered an apology. Xie rejected the appeal 69 72.
Unbeknownst to Wen Ruohuai, Xuelai’s livestream captured their exchange. Viewers criticized his affected vulnerability, and he fled in panic when he realized his public image had collapsed 72.
On the show’s final day, nobody chose him during the partner-snatching activity. He entered Xie Zhuzhou’s round intending to attack him, tripped Qin Fang, fought Wen Nan, and bit Qin Fang’s arm. Xie Zhuzhou ultimately kicked Qin Fang, sending all three men flying 76 77.
Expulsion and Financial Ruin
By New Year’s Day, Wen Ruohuai’s cousins openly mocked his conduct on the dating show and refused to acknowledge him as their older cousin. He responded with bitter thoughts that they deserved to die. During the holiday, he hired people to beat them up; this and his other accumulated troubles eventually led to his expulsion from the Wen Family 124 275.
Zhang Yin’s agency terminated his contract, and no major agency would accept him. Online investigators also traced Wen Nan’s smear campaign back to him, exposing the switched-baby story and provoking widespread condemnation of both Wen Ruohuai and the Wen Family 274.
Wen Ruohuai lost his remaining shares, property, and car in an investment scam. The scammers posed as relatives of wealthy families and persuaded him to invest everything in a supposedly profitable venture. He had hoped to multiply his fortune and regain the Wen Family’s respect 275.
With nowhere else to turn, he sought Wen Nan at his agency. He apologized but again argued that Wen Nan had enjoyed benefits that should have been his. Wen Nan refused to help and rejected any debt between them. When Wen Ruohuai clung to his arm, Lili pulled him away and tossed him aside 275.
Appearance
- Described as fairly good-looking, even by Wen Nan 6.
- Usually has a gentle expression, which becomes cold and frightening during his confrontation with Wen Nan 20.
Personality
Wen Ruohuai measures his present circumstances against the childhood he believes he was denied. Even after gaining wealth and affection from both families, he continues to feel wronged. He blames Wen Nan for benefiting from the switch and later attributes his own social embarrassments to him as well 13 17 124.
He deliberately uses vulnerability to seek sympathy, but rejection often breaks his composed façade. With Xie Zhuzhou, he shifts from threats and attempted exclusion to an apologetic, pitiful approach once he recognizes the imbalance in their influence. His final plea to Wen Nan likewise combines an admission of wrongdoing with the insistence that Wen Nan owes him help 14 72 275.
Relationships
- Wen Nan — The boy switched with him at birth and his principal rival. Wen Ruohuai targets him with online smears, while Wen Nan exposes their history and ultimately refuses to rescue him from financial ruin 13 20 275.
- Xie Zhuzhou — Fellow Love 5 guest who overhears his admission about the smear campaign. Wen Ruohuai resents his indifference, attempts to have him removed, and later unsuccessfully seeks reconciliation 13 14 72.
- Zhang Yin — Senior entertainer associated with the agency that signs him for his talent. In the changed storyline, Zhang Yin questions his character, and the agency eventually terminates his contract 20 274.
- Wen Family — His biological family, which initially gives him wealth and preferential treatment but later criticizes and expels him 8 275.
- Wen Nan’s biological parents — His adoptive parents. They raise him, leave him housing and compensation money, and continue siding with him after the switch is exposed 20 274.
- Unnamed fiancé — Previously associated with Wen Nan; Wen Ruohuai claims the engagement as his own, prompting questions about why he is participating in a dating show 12 19.
Role in the Original Novel
Wen Ruohuai is the original novel’s protagonist shou. In that storyline, the older Zhang Yin guides him during the dating show and prevents him from going astray. The altered storyline removes that stabilizing influence 43 275.
His closeness to Zhang Yin originally attracts the hostility of Chu Wenwen, Zhang Yin’s obsessive fan, who purchases damaging information about him. Unable to defeat the Chu Family even by the ending, Wen Ruohuai reconciles with her. The experience teaches him the limits of his family’s influence and leads him to behave more cautiously 52.
