Background / History
Bonding Beyond the Wall
Aermir captured Sith as a cub in the mountains beyond the Wall. The bonding spell occupied roughly half the soul space he had expected. Once he named her, she rubbed her head against his chest and responded to his affection with a wild, purring growl 43.
Sith briefly became sad when Aermir mentioned her mother, but accepted their departure. He placed her and Berus in the Training Space before leaving, hoping to avoid a confrontation with the returning mother 43.
As Sith grew, Aermir sought other shadowcats to expand her animal group. Their scarcity limited her success: by Chapter 61, she had found three adults and two newborn cubs 56 61.
Defense Against the Ironborn
Sith carried Aermir from Winterfell toward Blazewater Bay during the Ironborn raids. His stamina enhancement allowed them to cover 750 kilometers in three hours, but left her too exhausted for direct combat. She nevertheless remained fast enough to carry him beyond the raiders’ reach while he attacked with arrows 72.
At Deepwood Motte, Sith charged into the Ironborn ranks while Aermir used smoke and Fog Cloud to disrupt their formation. Her mana-amplified roar helped break the enemy’s resistance. She and Harrick led the advance toward the castle gate, inspiring the Northmen to follow them into close combat 79.
Sith continued fighting the remaining Ironborn despite accumulating injuries. On Bear Island, Aermir instead rode Lika so that Sith could fight independently. After Lika’s death, Sith helped comfort her grieving master 80 81 83.
Following the fighting, Aermir cast Water Walking on Sith and rode her across the sea. He deliberately chose a fishing village as their landing point so that witnesses would see the apparent miracle 87.
Casterly Rock and the Royal Court
Sith’s size frightened the sentries at Casterly Rock into closing the gates. When the confrontation escalated, she roared and the defenders fired arrows; Aermir reassured her that he would not let anyone put her in chains 95 96.
King Robert subsequently asked to ride her. Aermir refused, explaining that she was neither a pet nor a toy. Loren Lannister challenged her and was thrown five or six meters by a single headbutt. Sith then demonstrated her claws by cutting three marks approximately five centimeters deep into a tree 98.
Joffrey later tried to mount her without permission. Sith struck him with her tail and broke his nose, believing she had only given him a gentle push. Aermir was placed under house arrest, while Sith was confined in the Lannisters’ lion cage and faced execution 101.
After the confrontation involving Emre the Druid, Sith became a public symbol of defiance toward the Seven and the king, and a badge of honor among the Northmen 103 105.
Conquest of the Iron Islands
At Volmark, Sith obeyed Aermir’s order to leap over the charging northern soldiers and enter the breached gate. She jumped more than twenty meters, trusting him to shield her from the impact, and landed among the defenders under layers of magical protection 108.
During the fighting against House Myre, an attacker jumped from a wall and struck her with an axe, breaking three ribs. The injury forced Aermir to withdraw with her for an hour 110.
At Harlaw, Sith used Lion’s Roar to frighten the defenders and dodged Scorpion bolts while approaching the gate. Her initial charge did not completely break the barricade, so she tore apart its wagons with her paws while Aermir’s magic protected her from spears 114.
The Winterfell Godswood Confrontation
When the Night’s King’s curse threatened Aermir, he ordered Sith to bring him a living sheep without hurting it. She carried the animal gently in her jaws to the Godswood, where he began an emergency ritual 135.
Catelyn Stark gathered roughly eighty soldiers and confronted Sith beside the unconscious Aermir. Following Bo’s instructions, Sith initially defended him without killing his attackers. Repeated blows exhausted and angered her, but she continued restraining herself because she knew Aermir would disapprove of harming his people 136 137.
Bo eventually authorized her to kill one attacker as a warning, while forbidding her from targeting Catelyn. Sith tore a soldier apart and threw his torso toward her. Her subsequent mana-filled roar terrified the soldiers but also disrupted Aermir’s efforts to suppress the curse, leaving Sith remorseful 137.
Eddard arrived and ended the confrontation. Sith allowed him to approach Aermir and answered questions through paw signals. After recovering, Aermir learned what had happened and later treated her bruises and contusions 137 138 139.
The Three Sisters and the Vale
Sith fought at Moon drift port, where she and Aermir cut through the invading forces of the Three Sisters. Their attacks contributed to the collapse of the enemy’s resistance 189 190.
Aermir later used her to support the deception that his knightly and druid identities were separate people. A subordinate wearing his armor rode Sith while he operated elsewhere as the Druid. She carried the double through Longsister’s shattered gates and subsequently accepted Osric as a rider during the Vale campaign, although she repeatedly complained about his weakness and orders 193 196 207.
Battle Against the Night’s King
Transported to a frozen wasteland, Aermir summoned Sith and his other familiars, covered them in protective spells, and mounted her before breaking out of an earthen dome to confront the Others. Sith evaded the Night’s King’s ice shards, and Aermir instructed her to help the other familiars once he engaged their leader 246 247.
As the familiars’ defenses failed under overwhelming numbers, Sith charged the Night’s King to aid her master. He struck her through the body with an ice spear 248.
Appearance
- Size: Grows from a cub to a mount described as pony-sized and later horse-sized; weighs approximately 600 kilograms by Chapter 92 43 72 92.
- Coat: Originally black and white. Over time, her coat becomes predominantly obsidian-black, with the former white stripes darkening to dark gray 164.
- Tail: Thick and furry, with enough force to break Joffrey’s nose with what she considers a light push 56 101.
- Movement: Retains precise feline grace despite her enormous size; her footsteps can be completely silent 164.
- Purr: Exceptionally loud, compared by Aermir to a sports car engine 76.
Personality
Sith is affectionate toward Aermir and fiercely protective of him. She rubs against him, purrs when stroked, and becomes distressed when he is unconscious or grieving. Her trust is strong enough that she follows his order to make a dangerous leap at Volmark despite fearing a collision 43 76 83 108 136.
She is also proud, territorial, and deeply opposed to being treated as an ordinary riding animal. Flattery can sway her, but not reliably: when Aermir praises her magnificence while bargaining over Arya, Sith recognizes the attempt and continues negotiating. She distinguishes military necessity from recreational riding 92 166 207.
Her intelligence coexists with a predator’s instincts. She judges unfamiliar humans by physical strength, sometimes proposes eating them, and struggles with figures of speech. Nevertheless, she can show considerable restraint, endure attacks rather than disobey Aermir’s wishes, and recognize when her own actions have endangered him 76 101 136 137 166.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Natural Weapons
- Her claws can tear through poor-quality iron armor, disembowel a person, or sever a head with one swipe 73.
- Her bite ranks third among Aermir’s familiars at the time of the coastal battles, behind Lika and Berus 73.
- Uses her head, tail, body weight, and paws as weapons, allowing her to incapacitate opponents without using her claws or fangs 98 101 136.
- Can crush armored opponents and dismantle wooden barricades 114 124.
Speed and Endurance
- Naturally covers approximately 180–250 kilometers in a day; Aermir’s enhancement can greatly increase her travel range, though extreme exertion can leave her unable to fight 72.
- Mana-powered running reaches 300 kilometers per hour for an hour. Aermir’s wind-elemental-assisted reduction of air resistance raises their combined travel speed to 400 kilometers per hour 87.
- Her armor imposes a substantial penalty: during the Volmark assault, her stated top speed is 250 kilometers per hour, sustainable for only 45 seconds under that load 108.
Presence Concealment
- Moves silently and suppresses her presence well enough to stand behind an unaware deer 61.
- Continues moving without audible footsteps even at her later enormous size 164.
Magical Reinforcement and Durability
- Uses mana to enhance her speed and defense; her fur takes on a sheen when she activates her magic 98 114.
- Ordinary arrows, blades, and spears are largely ineffective against her developed defenses 61 137.
- Limits: Repeated blunt impacts cause pain and exhaustion, and a sufficiently forceful axe strike breaks her ribs. She is not invulnerable to powerful magical attacks 110 137 248.
- Has no magic heart; her demonstrated techniques reinforce her body rather than functioning as conventional spellcasting 114.
Lion’s Roar
- Reinforces her throat and vocal cords with mana, filling the resulting sound waves with magic 114.
- Frightens and debilitates enemies, disrupting formations and discouraging resistance 79 114 137.
- Can interfere with nearby allied magic: her roar briefly destabilizes Aermir’s mana while he struggles against the curse 137.
Magical Senses and Familiar Bond
- Detects unusual magical qualities through scent. Her observation about Dacey prompts Aermir to investigate Dacey’s unusually high mana, and she later notices distinctive magical scents around Winterfell 92 134.
- Communicates intelligibly with Aermir and the other familiars, despite Aermir publicly understating her intelligence 76.
- Her bond grants Aermir night vision and precise, agile movement that he calls “feline grace” 48.
- Can be summoned with touching inanimate objects totaling up to 10% of her body weight—approximately 60 kilograms when she weighs 600 kilograms. This is a summoning limit, not a stated ordinary carrying limit 92.
Assistance from Aermir
- Water Walking: Allows her to cross the sea for thirty minutes per casting; it is Aermir’s spell, not an innate ability 87.
- Protective magic: Aermir shields her charges with Oak Shield, wind barriers, air-elemental cushioning, and later layered shields and Stoneskin 108 114 246.
Equipment
- Custom saddle — Made by Winterfell’s saddler to Aermir’s specifications for two gold dragons 72.
- Steel-and-leather armor — Thin, small steel plates protect her head, chest, and back, with leather braces on her legs. Its design leaves her claws usable 108.
- Later magical armor — Appears in silver armor described as magical during Aermir’s return to Winterfell 164.
- Saddle-carried weapons and baggage — Transports armor bags and carries Aermir’s halberd, Moon Hunter, among his equipment 92 189.
Relationships
- Aermir Drasil / Emre the Druid — Master, bonded companion, and principal rider. Their relationship combines affection, trust, negotiation, and her fierce commitment to his protection 43 83 108 166.
- Bo — Fellow familiar who directs Sith during Aermir’s unconsciousness, initially forbidding harm to the Northmen and later authorizing a single lethal warning 136 137.
- Lika — Fellow familiar and training companion. Sith comforts Aermir after Lika’s sacrifice 54 83.
- Dacey Mormont — Allowed to pet Sith, but refused a recreational ride. Sith’s interest in her unusual scent helps expose her magical potential 92.
- Bran and Rickon Stark — Tolerated as “cubs.” Sith lets them climb on her and handles them gently, behavior she would not accept from adult guards 138 139.
- Arya Stark — Wants to ride and play with Sith. Sith eventually agrees to half an hour of play while explicitly prohibiting riding 166.
- Catelyn Stark — Leads an armed attempt to drive Sith away from Aermir. Sith wants to retaliate against her directly, but obeys Bo’s prohibition 136 137.
- Eddard Stark — Recognizes Sith’s intelligence and danger, stops the Godswood attack, and gains her permission to examine Aermir 137.
- Osric — Accepted as a strategic substitute rider, though Sith resents his handling and repeatedly threatens him in communications with Aermir 207.
