Background / History

Kirigakure and Exile

Zabuza was an elite Kirigakure Anbu operative and a member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. His reputation as the “Demon of the Hidden Mist” spread throughout the Land of Water and the underground black market. A rumor credited him with killing every student in his graduating class during the Ninja Academy’s graduation examination 16 23 34 169.

He later attempted to assassinate the Fourth Mizukage, Karatachi Yagura. After failing, he fled toward the Land of Waves. He attributed his exile and the collapse of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen to Yagura’s increasingly brutal rule, including extermination orders against kekkei genkai clans 168.

Defeat and Recruitment

While wandering, Zabuza encountered Haku on Kenya’s island and tried to claim him as a killing tool because of his Ice Release. He also intended to seize the island and its supplies. Haku refused, identifying himself instead as Kenya’s chef, and Kenya intervened 16.

Zabuza’s attempt to kill Kenya ended when Kenya headbutted Kubikiribōchō with an Armament Haki-hardened forehead. The recoil injured Zabuza’s arms and internal organs, while the blade suffered a fist-sized notch and a warped body. His subsequent Water Dragon Bullet was pierced by Kenya’s Black Iron Thorns, which pinned him against a rock face faster than he could escape with Body Flicker 17 18.

Expecting execution, Zabuza accepted defeat. Kenya instead offered food, lodging, and occasional taijutsu instruction in exchange for construction work. Exhausted by life on the run and moved by the warmth around the campfire, Zabuza accepted and became Kenya’s principal laborer 19.

Building the Iron Fist Chamber of Commerce

Zabuza hauled and assembled black iron wood for the island fortress while Haku prepared meals. Once the base was established, he accompanied Kenya to the Land of Waves, defeated Gato’s samurai with his new greatsword, and helped force Gato to surrender the businesses that became the Iron Fist Chamber of Commerce 19 20.

His duties expanded to defense and cargo supervision. He intercepted Kinoe’s Root squad at the island, later confronted Kumogakure ninja attempting to seize Chamber cargo, and organized the removal of their abandoned supplies after Kenya defeated them. Konoha’s intelligence subsequently identified him as the Chamber’s chief of security 23 37 40 42.

Return to Konoha

Zabuza enthusiastically supported Kenya’s return to Konoha, initially proposing that they fight through the main gate. Tsunade rejected the approach, and the group instead entered under the Chamber’s sponsorship of the Chunin Exams 40 45.

During the exams, Zabuza held Baki at swordpoint to prevent interference with Kenya’s treatment of Gaara. When the Konoha Crush began, he guarded Kenya and Haku, cutting down attackers while Kenya deliberately withheld help from Konoha’s leadership 88 89.

Afterward, he backed Kenya’s reforms through intimidation and security work. He restrained Homura and Koharu at swordpoint, trained newly recruited guards, and accompanied the Chamber’s auditors into Root’s headquarters during its liquidation 109 112 121.

Expeditions and the Land of Water

Zabuza accompanied Kenya toward the Land of Fire capital and later participated in the raid on the Underground Exchange. At the Bounty Station, he killed charging armored guards with a one-armed sword sweep. He also recognized Kakuzu and Hidan as Akatsuki members and warned Kenya about their notoriety 136 137 143 145 146.

After tracking Orochimaru’s white-snake scent to a concealed laboratory, Zabuza received Mei Terumi’s blood-written appeal for aid. He authenticated the letter and explained the devastation caused by Yagura’s regime. His knowledge of the Land of Water’s currents, reefs, and defenses made him the expedition’s guide 165 167 168 169.

During the voyage aboard the Iron Fist, he warned of the Forbidden Black Sea’s mines, fortified reefs, and modified beasts, then killed three attacking giant sharks. He subsequently accompanied Kenya and Mei to the Five Kage Summit as vanguard, drawing his sword against hostile Iwagakure shinobi and guarding Kenya during the confrontation with the Raikage and Ōnoki 170 180 184 185.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, burly, and heavily muscled; frequently works and fights bare-chested 23 34 106.
  • Bandages: Wraps his lower face and wrists in bandages 16.
  • Initial clothing: Wears a Kirigakure Anbu uniform and a forehead protector marked with a deep slash identifying him as a missing-nin 16.
  • Later clothing: Changes into a black robe for the visit to Gato’s port; wears combat boots aboard the Iron Fist 20 170.
  • Signature weapon: Usually carries an oversized black iron greatsword across one shoulder or strapped to his back 20 37 183.

Personality

Initially, Zabuza is ruthless, arrogant, and accustomed to treating vulnerable people as expendable tools. He threatens Haku into service and assumes that his name alone will frighten Kenya into surrendering the island. Even after being badly injured, he refuses to concede without attempting another attack 16 18.

His defeat exposes both his pride and his pragmatism. He is prepared to die rather than beg, but accepts Kenya’s unexpected offer of employment. A hot meal and Haku’s genuine smile affect him deeply after prolonged wandering through a world he associates with betrayal and slaughter 19.

Under Kenya, Zabuza becomes loyal and protective without losing his violent instincts. He readily proposes killing intruders or fighting through obstacles, while Tsunade and Kenya restrain him when violence would be counterproductive. He also develops practical concerns for the Chamber’s business, noting that Konoha’s destruction would damage their timber trade 23 45 89.

Despite his intimidating reputation, his comrades can unsettle him. Kenya’s Conqueror’s Haki forces him to his knees, and Tsunade’s arrival initially makes him fear an attack. At meals, however, hunger outweighs deference: he contests a slice of beef with Tsunade despite his respect for her 34 36 40.

Abilities & Skills

Greatsword Combat

Zabuza combines heavy blades, bodily rotation, and overwhelming swings rather than relying exclusively on ninjutsu 17 37.

  • Cleaves a thick tree trunk with Kubikiribōchō 16.
  • Smashes five or six Root elites aside in one exchange, overwhelming their short swords 23.
  • Uses precise blade placement to restrain Baki, Homura, and Koharu without immediately killing them 88 109.
  • Black Iron: Windmill Great Beheading: Turns his several-ton sword into an aerial spinning slash, killing three warship-sized sharks at once 170.
  • Limit: His strongest documented Kubikiribōchō strike cannot injure Kenya and instead produces devastating recoil 17.

Physical Strength and Endurance

His strength supports both heavy construction work and combat with an exceptionally massive weapon.

  • Carries black iron wood logs weighing several tons across the construction site 34.
  • Wields a several-ton greatsword one-handed 109 145.
  • Emerges from Root’s combined fire assault without meaningful injury, although his clothing is scorched 23.
  • Limit: Struggles to keep pace with Kenya’s journey to the capital, despite Kenya carrying an enormous black ironwood pillar 137.

Water Release

Zabuza uses Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique, forming a highly pressurized dragon from nearby seawater 18.

  • The dragon extends for dozens of meters.
  • A moisture-rich coastal environment increases the technique’s power.
  • Kenya’s Black Iron Thorns pierce and disperse it 18.

Body Flicker and Intimidation

  • Uses Body Flicker Technique for rapid repositioning, including appearing between Konoha’s elder advisers 109.
  • Projects intense killing intent to intimidate Haku, harbor aggressors, and hostile summit attendants 16 37 184.
  • Limits: Cannot evade Kenya’s Black Iron Thorns with Body Flicker or resist the overwhelming pressure of Kenya’s Conqueror’s Haki 18 36.

Tracking, Navigation, and Supervision

  • Tracks a white snake’s scent to Orochimaru’s concealed underground entrance 165.
  • Knows the Land of Water’s currents, reefs, defensive layouts, and blockade hazards 169 170.
  • Supervises construction crews, cargo handling, and newly recruited guards 34 37 112.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kubikiribōchō: His original, door-wide sword, exceeding two meters in length. Kenya badly damages it with a headbutt; the blade requires large quantities of enemy blood to regenerate 16 17.
  • Black iron wood greatsword: Custom-made by Kenya from high-density black iron wood. Initially described as three times Kubikiribōchō’s weight and later as weighing several tons; becomes Zabuza’s standard weapon 20 106.
  • Refined-steel kunai: A backup weapon that snaps when he attempts to cut Kenya’s Black Iron Thorns 18.

Relationships

  • Senju Kenya — Former enemy turned employer and commander. Kenya spares him, supplies his replacement sword, and entrusts him with construction, security, and expedition duties. Zabuza consistently addresses him as “boss” 19 20 42 180.
  • Haku — Initially attempts to enslave him as a killing tool. After joining Kenya, they become fellow members of the same household and faction, working together on the island and accompanying overseas missions 16 19 169.
  • Tsunade — Superior within Kenya’s faction. Zabuza respects her power, while she rejects his indiscriminate assault plans and competes with him over food 34 40 45.
  • Mei Terumi — Authenticates her personal plea for help and accompanies the expedition supporting her resistance against Yagura 168 169 171.
  • Karatachi Yagura — Former assassination target. Zabuza blames his regime for persecution, the fragmentation of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, and his own exile 168.
  • Orochimaru — Initially knows him through his fearsome reputation; later tracks his hideout and accompanies Kenya into the laboratory 60 165 167.
