Background / History

Danzo spent decades building Root into a private intelligence and assassination organization beneath Konoha. Alongside its official village funding, he financed its operations through secretly controlled chambers of commerce, with building materials among his principal sources of income 22 108.

His pursuit of the Hokage position was closely tied to his research into stolen bloodline powers. He collected Sharingan, conducted Hashirama-cell experiments, and coveted Senju Kenya’s bloodline as research material. Root attempted to take Kenya to its underground laboratory under the pretext of personally supervised training 1 22 108.

By the time of his downfall, Danzo had concealed ten Three-Tomoe Sharingan in a Hashirama-cell right arm and implanted Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan in his right eye socket. Their public exposure revealed his theft of fallen Uchiha operatives’ eyes and exposed his involvement in Shisui’s death 124.

Appearance

  • Elderly features: A wrinkled face, age spots, and a normally cold expression 2 124.
  • Bandaged right eye: Conceals Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan, recognizable by its four-pointed pinwheel pattern 124.
  • Modified right arm: Deathly white, twisted like tangled roots, with prominent veins and ten surgically implanted Sharingan. Usually hidden beneath sealing bandages 123 124.
  • Mobility aids: Commonly walks with a cane; uses a wheelchair while sheltering underground after Root’s defeat 2 106 108.
  • Clothing: Wears a black robe during his final battle 126 127.

Personality

Danzo presents his actions as necessary sacrifices for Konoha, even when they involve human experimentation, embezzlement, or cooperation with invading forces. At his public trial, he insists that the village survived because he bore its sins in the darkness 82 123.

His ambition is to become Hokage and surpass Hiruzen. He treats allies and subordinates as instruments: Orochimaru is a dangerous pawn, Root operatives are expendable assets, and Kenya’s body is a resource to dissect. His plans repeatedly depend on allowing others to exhaust themselves before he intervenes 22 50 82.

Despite his calculated self-image, humiliation quickly provokes violent anger. He destroys furniture when receiving bad news and pays Kenya’s ransom partly to prevent Root from becoming a public laughingstock. As Kenya dismantles his power, his confidence gives way to panic; after revealing his implants, it briefly becomes outright delusion as he declares himself a god 24 50 108 124.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

Danzo performs hand seals rapidly despite his age and uses cutting wind attacks 2.

  • Wind Release: Vacuum Wave: Releases invisible blades capable of slicing rock. They fail to cut Kenya’s hardened body 2.
  • Wind Release: Vacuum Great Sphere: Produces a barrage of high-pressure wind blades, combined with poisoned kunai during his final battle 126.

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

His transplanted eyes provide ocular power and access to forbidden Uchiha techniques 124 126.

  • Ten Three-Tomoe Sharingan are embedded in his right arm 124.
  • Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan occupies his right eye socket and releases a soul-targeting mental genjutsu against Kenya. The technique is not named in the passage 125.
  • Releasing all eleven eyes produces mental pressure strong enough to leave nearby Anbu struggling to breathe 124.

Izanagi

Izanagi converts injury and death into illusion for a short period, at the cost of permanently blinding a Sharingan 126.

  • Restores Danzo’s body and even his damaged clothing after a fatal blow 126.
  • Allows him to reappear at shifted locations, which he attempts to use for surprise attacks and escape 126.
  • Danzo claims that his implanted eyes grant eleven opportunities for rebirth; the technique still consumes a finite supply of eyes 126.
  • Kenya’s Observation Haki detects his reappearance points, allowing Kenya to strike before Danzo fully reforms 126.
  • His last remaining Sharingan is destroyed with his body, preventing another resurrection 127.

Hashirama Cells and Wood Release

Danzo’s modified arm combines Hashirama Senju’s cells with implanted Sharingan. He claims the cells suppress the eyes’ backlash, while the Sharingan provide control 124.

  • Wood Release: Violent Spear Tree: Grows dozens of thick, pale wooden trunks from his flesh to attack Kenya 125.
  • The released cells can grow roots powerful enough to tear apart the execution platform 124.
  • His control is unstable: the cells go berserk when their long-standing restraints are removed 124.
  • Kenya destroys the wooden attack and Danzo’s modified body with a single Haki-coated punch 125.

Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique

Danzo’s final technique sacrifices his corpse and soul to seal everything within hundreds of meters inside his body 127.

  • Activates from a black seal over his heart and expands into a spherical barrier 127.
  • Draws surrounding rock, soil, and air into an extradimensional abyss 127.
  • Kenya shatters the barrier with Fist Bone Meteor, combining physical force, Armament Haki, and Conqueror’s Haki 127.

Intelligence and Political Operations

  • Maintains covert agents, foreign contacts, underground monitoring bases, and assassination squads 22 82.
  • Secretly supplies Konoha’s barrier-defense maps to Orochimaru and permits enemy infiltration 82.
  • Uses a signed emergency wartime security order to justify Root’s attempted seizure of power 104.
  • Prepares assassination targets and escape routes in a hidden document later recovered beneath his bed 122.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Kenya’s Defection

Root’s attempt to abduct Kenya fails when he defeats its leading jonin. Danzo arrives personally, accuses Kenya of treason, and attacks with Vacuum Wave. Kenya withstands the technique and sends him through a courtyard wall with a Haki-coated slap. Injured and humiliated, Danzo orders Root to kill him; Kenya responds by tearing off his Konoha forehead protector 1 2.

Conflict over the Iron Fist Chamber of Commerce

Kenya’s black iron wood displaces Root’s building-materials business, costing Danzo a lucrative daimyo fortification contract. Recognizing the lumber as mutated Wood Release, Danzo orders Kinoe to burn the warehouses and capture Kenya alive for dissection 22.

Kenya lures the squad to his island and captures it. Threatened with the public distribution of humiliating sketches of the prisoners, Danzo pays 25 million ryo for their release 23 24.

Chunin Exams Conspiracy

After Kenya returns with Tsunade and 200 million ryo in sponsorship, Danzo concludes that an open attack is politically untenable. He turns to Orochimaru, offering secret research in exchange for Kenya’s elimination 50.

During the finals, Danzo keeps Root underground while awaiting the invasion. His plan is to let Orochimaru weaken Hiruzen and allow Shukaku to exhaust Kenya, then emerge as Konoha’s savior and claim the Hokage position. Kenya overhears the entire scheme through Observation Haki 82.

Failed Takeover and Flight

After the invasion, Root attempts to arrest Kenya under Danzo’s emergency order. Civilians protest, and the Anbu refuse to obey. Kenya incapacitates all three hundred Root elites with Conqueror’s Haki 104 105.

As the Senju take power and the major clans accept the new administration, Danzo orders the destruction of Root’s research and records and prepares to escape. He is intercepted before crossing the Land of Fire’s border 106 108 123.

Public Trial and Death

Root’s liquidation exposes financial crimes, black-market dealings, withheld Uchiha payments, and plans to assassinate clan leaders. Danzo is publicly tried for embezzlement, human experimentation, and treason 121 122 123.

When Zabuza moves to execute him, Danzo breaks his restraints and unveils his stolen eyes and Hashirama-cell arm. Kenya destroys his attacks, repeatedly kills him through Izanagi, and exhausts nearly all his implanted Sharingan 123 124 125 126.

Danzo finally activates the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique in an attempt to take Kenya with him. Kenya shatters the seal and vaporizes Danzo, including his last Sharingan. The surviving Root loyalists surrender their weapons and remove their masks, ending the organization 127.
