| Martial Emperor | 36 37 40 | Subsequently identified as a Martial Emperor and the kingdom’s foremost expert. His pressure overwhelms peak Martial Saint Zhu Yueshan. The breakthrough itself and its method are not shown. |
Background
Mu Zhantian earned illustrious military achievements while fighting for the Eastern Tomb Kingdom. His personal strength gives the Mu Clan considerable political weight: the imperial family’s desire to retain his favor helped prolong Xuanyuan Jin’s engagement to Mu Yunxi despite the prince’s contempt for her 15 38.
His sons include Mu Zhenhai and Mu Tianshuo. Tianshuo was once a celebrated genius, but became a raving fool overnight before mysteriously disappearing. Watching Yunxi’s composure while treating Mu Yunmo reminds Zhantian of his missing son 10 37 38.
His military commitments frequently took him away from home. He later regrets that, despite his devotion to Yunxi, those absences left her exposed to years of bullying and ridicule 38.
Appearance
- Clothing: Wears brown robes when arriving to confront Zhu Yueshan 36.
- Eyes: Has a sharp, tiger-like gaze 36.
- Bearing: His stern face and mountain-like presence inspire fear and respect even before he acts 36.
Personality
Mu Zhantian is fiercely protective of Mu Yunxi and openly indulgent toward her. He offers to restrain an imperial prince for her to punish, mocks that prince to his face, and refuses to let clan members use their authority against her. His conspicuous favoritism fuels resentment among Mu Yuyan and other disciples 15 16 17.
His pride in Yunxi’s growing independence coexists with anxiety for her safety. He celebrates her victories but insists that she take guards outside, fearing retaliation beyond his protection. When she displays unexpected medical expertise, he values her well-being over an explanation and does not press her to reveal her secrets 37 38.
His concern extends equally to his grandson. Although desperate to save Mu Yunmo, he will not sacrifice Yunxi in exchange for treatment, and urges Mu Zhenhai to prioritize saving Yunmo before settling their debt with the Zhu Clan 39.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Cultivation and Suppressive Pressure
His cultivation allows him to subdue weaker opponents through his aura alone 16 36.
- Forces pressure onto Mu Zhenxiang while rejecting his demand to punish Yunxi 16.
- Disrupts Mu Luoyan’s blood and qi with his voice and imposing presence, leaving her unable to speak 17.
- As a Martial Emperor, presses down on Zhu Yueshan with an aura compared to a mountain 36.
Energy Transfer
He can channel his energy directly into another person’s body 38.
- Sends a steady stream of energy through Yunxi’s back after she exhausts herself administering acupuncture to Yunmo 38.
- The transfer eases her immediate discomfort; it is not shown repairing Yunmo’s damaged dantian 38.
Military Experience
- Has fought extensively for the Eastern Tomb Kingdom and earned distinguished military achievements 15 38.
- Commands enough prestige that even Xuanyuan Jin treats him cautiously 15.
Relationships
- Mu Yunxi — Granddaughter and the focus of his most conspicuous affection. His unconditional acceptance of her unexplained abilities leads her to acknowledge him wholeheartedly as family 15 38.
- Mu Yunmo — His only biological grandson. Zhantian is anguished by the destruction of Yunmo’s dantian and entrusts his initial treatment to Yunxi 37 39.
- Mu Zhenhai — Son and ally in protecting Yunxi and Yunmo. Zhantian restrains his anger toward the Zhu Clan so they can focus on saving Yunmo 39.
- Mu Tianshuo — Missing son and Yunxi’s father. Yunxi’s poise and brilliance remind Zhantian of him 37 38.
- Mu Zhenxiang — Nephew from his younger brother’s branch. Zhantian suppresses him for demanding Yunxi’s punishment and condemns his household’s treatment of her 16.
- Mu Yuyan and Mu Luoyan — Younger clan relatives who resent his favoritism. He rebukes their attempts to have Yunxi punished or surrendered to the Zhu Clan 15 17 36.
- Xuanyuan Jin — Yunxi’s former fiancé. Zhantian supports the broken engagement, calls him a “pretty boy,” and orders him out of the residence 15 16.
- Zhu Yueshan — Rival patriarch and old chancellor. Zhantian threatens him for attacking Yunxi, demands an arm in atonement, and challenges him to a duel 35 36 37.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ending the Engagement Dispute
Zhantian returns while Mu Zhenxiang and his allies are pressuring Yunxi to kneel. He praises her refusal to submit, orders protesting clan members to remain on their knees, and supports her rejection of Xuanyuan Jin. After dismissing the prince, he rejects accusations that Yunxi injured Mu Luoyan, pointing out the contradiction in claiming that an alleged cultivation failure defeated a trained Martial Master. He ends the dispute by ordering everyone away 15 16 17.
Confrontation with the Zhu Clan
He intervenes as Zhu Yueshan attempts to kill Yunxi after she cripples Zhu Jianqiang. Initially unwilling to believe that Yunxi could defeat the Zhu grandsons, he responds with delighted pride when she admits it. Learning that the younger grandson tried to assault her only strengthens his support. Zhu Yueshan eventually withdraws with Jianqiang 35 36 37.
Afterward, Zhantian allows Yunxi to treat Yunmo’s severely damaged dantian. He witnesses her eighty-one-needle procedure, steadies her when she becomes exhausted, and assures her that she need not explain how she acquired her skills 37 38.
Supporting Yunmo’s Recovery
When the Zhu Clan offers access to its third-rank alchemist in exchange for Yunxi, Zhantian refuses to trade one grandchild’s life for the other’s. He initially forbids Yunxi from entering the Mystic Heaven Demon Forest to gather medicinal ingredients 39.
Yunxi changes his mind by revealing her high-stage Martial Master cultivation and explaining that she cleared the poison that had prevented her from cultivating. Astonished that she reached this level in less than a month, he agrees to her journey on the condition that she attend the family testing assembly. He also insists that outsiders must not learn of the revelation and vows not to spare the person who poisoned her 40.
