Nature and Laws

The Netherworld is the Yin counterpart to the Yang Realm. Its dense death energy harms living beings; prolonged exposure can transform them into dead spirits, with the risk increasing in deeper levels of Asura Hell 1926.

• The Yin and Yang realms are separated by the laws of heaven and earth, making ordinary cross-realm travel extremely difficult 1926.
• Powerful beings cannot freely cross between the realms; even a Nether Sovereign requires special means to open a passage 1918.
• Forced entry into Asura Hell outside designated routes is lethal. Even a cultivator proficient in Yin-Yang transformation would struggle to pass the membrane between Yellow Springs City and the first level, while deeper levels become increasingly impossible to breach 1919.
• The Netherworld's first level of Asura Hell contains roughly 80% death energy and 20% spiritual energy 1926.

Geography

Yellow Springs City

Yellow Springs City is the Netherworld's border region in the Yang Realm and its principal gateway for living beings. It contains the Bridge of Helplessness, which receives the souls of the dead 1926.

• Spiritual energy accounts for roughly 80% of the area's energy, while death energy accounts for 20% 1926.
• It is the only city in an otherwise empty, inhospitable region 1926.
• Major Ghost Cultivator sects of the Yang Realm maintain branches there and act as intermediaries with the Netherworld 1926.
• Ghost Cultivators use traps at Yang Realm spatial nodes to capture cultivators and send them into Asura Hell 1927.
• Yellow Springs City is the only known route by which living beings can enter or leave the Netherworld 1926.

Asura Hell

Asura Hell consists of eighteen levels. The deeper the level, the more mid- and high-level ghosts it contains 1925.

• The first level lies near the border of the Netherworld and serves as a place where souls barred from reincarnation are punished 1926.
• It contains four Nether Emperors, each ruling a Ghost Domain city and surrounding territory 1972.
• After the tenth level, Nether Sovereigns govern; they generally do not ascend to upper levels without exceptional cause 1972.
• The first level's Warden is Nether Emperor Ye Luo, while the Judge of the Underworld is its highest known authority 1925.

River of 冥淪

The River of 冥淪, also called the River of Oblivion, is an endless and dangerous river along whose banks Flowers of the Shores grow 1927.

• The river distorts space for approximately ten miles along both banks, weakening spells and twisting or refracting Divine Sense 1927.
• Strange creatures within it can imprison devoured souls eternally beneath its waters 1927.
• Ghost Creatures generally avoid its banks and instead force prisoners to gather resources there 1927.
• Its water flows toward a central point and can reveal faces beneath its surface; contact produces unpredictable, painful effects 1954.

Fallen Soul Mountain

Fallen Soul Mountain contains two cross-domain spatial passages leading toward Yellow Springs City. A Nether Emperor is assigned to guard them in rotation, preventing powerful outsiders from infiltrating Asura Hell 1972.

Resources and Punishments

Flowers of the Shores

Flowers of the Shores grow only beside the River of 冥淪 on the first level of Asura Hell. Those more than three hundred years old contain a Yin-Yang critical-point power that can lead to a qualitative breakthrough in cultivation when properly refined 1926.

• A flower must be harvested directly to retain its useful Yin-Yang effect; distant collection leaves it largely ineffective 1926.
• Direct contact drains Netherworld Lifespan from Ghost Creatures and the vitality of living beings 1926 1927.
• A Nascent Soul cultivator may have only enough remaining lifespan to gather roughly ten to twenty flowers 1927.
• Prisoners are forced to collect them using gray bottle Magic Treasures designed solely for storing the flowers 1929.
• The Netherworld cannot transplant the flowers, despite their rapid natural reproduction along the riverbank 1927.

Crimson Death Seal

The Crimson Death Seal is imposed on captives forced into flower-gathering labor. Refusal to obey results in death 1927.

• The seal enables the Netherworld to exploit captured cultivators' lifespans rather than immediately killing them 1919.
• Harvesting a single flower can consume more than fifty years of a captive's lifespan 1919.
• The seal and the prison system turn the first level of Asura Hell into a long-term source of forced labor and cultivation resources 1926 1927.

Relationship with the Netherworld Sect

Despite their similar names, the Netherworld Sect is not a Ghost Cultivator sect and has almost no direct connection to Ghost Cultivators. Its name led outsiders to make that assumption, but it possesses only a limited number of Ghost Cultivation methods 1898.

• The Netherworld Sect and the Extinction Sect later discovered that the real Netherworld had targeted their Ghost Domain training expedition 1999 2000.
• Li Yan's return with Ghost Creatures Fa Nan and another captive supplied evidence of the Netherworld's involvement 2624.
• The Wangliang Sect and Miesheng Sect ultimately negotiated with a Netherworld envoy, returning the captured ghosts in exchange for special Netherworld resources and concessions 2624.

Story Role

A powerful figure of the Yin-Yang Chaos Sect arranged a transaction with a Nether Sovereign to attack the Netherworld Sect and Extinction Sect disciples training in a Ghost Domain. The payment included rare supreme-Yin and extreme-cold treasures, two Yin Marrow Crystals, and the intervention of a Nether Emperor 1919.

The operation used the Lake of Rebirth to create temporary passages between the Ghost Domain and the first level of Asura Hell. The passages pulled Li Yan and other cultivators across realms, causing extensive casualties 1918 2000.

Li Yan was imprisoned in the first level of Asura Hell, where he learned the Netherworld's hierarchy, prison system, Yellow Springs City routes, and the exploitation of Flowers of the Shores 1925 1926 1927. His eventual escape exposed the cross-realm plot and gave the two sects evidence to confront the Netherworld 1999 2001.

• The Netherworld's rules do not treat death as an end: souls can be repeatedly tortured, restored to clarity after madness, and prevented from escaping through death 1924.
• The Judge of the Underworld's control of the Book of Life and Death prevents both Ghost Creatures and Ghost Cultivators from freely extending lifespans 1927.
