Background / History
Family and Education
Wen Xu grows up in a wealthy business family, with his father preparing him as a successor from childhood. He later studies business administration and receives practical training from Wen Zhengrong. His overseas education also leaves him with an international network of former classmates 130 156 186.
Despite this preparation, he initially feels little enthusiasm for inheriting the business. Employees at his father’s factory dismiss him as someone fortunate enough to be born wealthy rather than someone with abilities comparable to Wen Zhengrong’s. As a child, he also briefly tries martial arts but quits after a few days because he cannot endure the training 121 163.
First Visits to Clear Breeze Temple
Wen Xu first visits Clear Breeze Temple in cosplay, sporting silver hair. He identifies himself to Yun Zhaozhao as President Wen’s son, clarifying that he is not the representative responsible for their partnership. After eating Daoist Chang Kong’s cooking, he drives back to the city, only to return that evening because other food no longer satisfies him 109.
When Yun Zhaozhao jokingly demands roughly a million yuan for a late-night serving of golden egg fried rice, he offers ten thousand. She ultimately charges him only one hundred yuan. He stays overnight, befriends the temple’s young Daoists, and is astonished by their competent Tai Chi Chuan practice 109 110.
His early visits establish him as an easy target for the temple’s money-making schemes. He pays ten thousand yuan for a private concert, expecting an enjoyable musical performance; instead, the Daoists play suonas for nearly half the night. A regular concertgoer, he decides afterward that he needs at least six months away from band performances 112.
His appetite eventually brings him back to City A by plane. Embarrassed to be traveling solely for food, he arrives in a hat and sunglasses, but his disguise does not exempt him from the dining hall’s real-name reservation requirement. After three days of trying, he secures a seat and unsuccessfully investigates whether Daoist Chang Kong might work elsewhere 114 115.
Managing the City A Factory
Song Qinglan encourages Wen Xu’s transfer to City A after interpreting his temple visits as possible romantic interest. Wen Xu agrees to take charge of the new factory because he wants to prove himself, while Wen Zhengrong confirms his intentions and assigns Huang Xi to assist him 115 116 117 119.
Before taking over, he undergoes job rotations at his father’s company. His logistics assignment involves loading, unloading, and transporting goods alongside the workers. He later arrives in City A with Huang Xi to manage the branch factory 119 124.
Yun Zhaozhao proposes co-branded chicken feet, chicken wings, and duck necks, with Daoist Chang Kong developing the flavors. Wen Xu enthusiastically supports the idea, particularly because it gives him another opportunity to enjoy the chef’s cooking. The resulting online store soon ranks among the top three for comparable products 119 128.
He also agrees to send factory trucks and drivers to collect supplies from Clear Breeze Temple. Wen Zhengrong permits the arrangement but orders its transport expenses deducted from his son’s salary 127.
Wen Xu and Jingting begin weekly sales livestreams, declining offers to promote unrelated businesses’ products. Although the co-branded snacks become successful, Wen Xu follows Yun Zhaozhao’s advice to expand steadily rather than abruptly increase production, continuing to produce Wen Group’s established flagship products 129 131 135.
Courtship and Growing Support
Wen Xu’s interest gradually shifts from the temple’s food to Yun Zhaozhao herself. At City A Zoo, he notices her uncomfortable shoes and quietly buys her slippers. He later purchases an apartment near her chosen residential complex and offers to help furnish her home 140 144 145.
During a furniture-shopping trip, Yun Zhaozhao openly acknowledges that she knows he likes her and allows him to continue. His attempts at flirtation frequently leave him more embarrassed than her: when he tries using his looks to draw closer, he blushes and retreats while she remains composed 151 152.
After seeking Huang Xi’s advice, he increasingly supports Yun Zhaozhao’s work rather than trying to draw her away from it. He obtains useful business contacts through his parents, personally visits those contacts before introducing them, and helps her negotiate a contract on better terms than she expected 154 155 156.
His courtship also involves correcting his own behavior. After becoming jealous of Tang Li, he recognizes that his supposed concern reflects distrust, acknowledges Yun Zhaozhao’s freedom to choose her friends, and pays for the outdoor film screenings she had been discussing with Tang Li 157.
Temple Celebrations and Later Contributions
Wen Xu spends New Year at Clear Breeze Temple rather than accompanying his parents on holiday. He brings fireworks, red envelopes, and a handmade cloisonné vase, joins the courtyard celebrations, and helps Yun Zhaozhao check accounts until nearly midnight. On New Year’s Day, he leads the young Daoists in picking strawberries for the temple’s sales 161 162 163 164.
His later contributions extend beyond the food partnership. He arranges collectibles for the exhibition hall through his father, brings company employees to plant trees, and livestreams the planting effort. He also pitches nearby villa development to Wen Zhengrong, emphasizing the temple’s accessibility and medical clinic; his father agrees only to investigate 171 173 178.
Wen Xu eventually entrusts his entire savings to Yun Zhaozhao for investment. When she tells him she has spent it all, he remains calm and promises to earn more. She uses the funds for Clear Breeze Temple’s merchandise shop, trademarks, and legal protection. Although her interest in him has begun to grow, he still describes her as his “future wife” rather than an established girlfriend 181 182.
When the temple seeks recognition among the province’s top ten Taoist temples, Wen Xu mobilizes his former overseas classmates to publicize the vote internationally. After a month of campaigning, Clear Breeze Temple finishes tenth in the online vote and receives the provincial honor 186.
Appearance
- Youthful face: Looks young enough for Lin Banxia to mistake him for a minor, an assumption he strongly dislikes 110.
- Hair and clothing: Debuts with silver hair while cosplaying; later carefully styles his hair and chooses outfits for meetings with Yun Zhaozhao 109 153 173.
- Facial features: Has long eyelashes, a high nose bridge, and naturally reddish lips. His eyes are described as bright and dewy 152 184.
- Attractiveness: His looks attract livestream viewers and prompt Yun Zhaozhao to consider him suitable as the guesthouse’s handsome receptionist 111 173.
Personality
Wen Xu is generous, pleasure-loving, and accustomed to treating large expenses casually. He buys a supercar with livestream earnings, equips his factory with a gym, and hires a personal trainer and massage therapist. Jingting nevertheless admires his ability both to endure hard work and to enjoy himself 127 129.
He is emotionally resilient without being entirely insensitive. Discovering that Yun Zhaozhao and Daoist Chang Kong overcharged him for a handmade table initially angers him, but he later lets the matter go. His explanation—that wealth is a more lasting romantic advantage than good looks—leaves both of them impressed by his ability to take things in stride 159.
Romantically, he is earnest but inexperienced. Girls pursued him throughout his school years, leaving him poorly prepared to pursue someone as unconventional as Yun Zhaozhao. He becomes flustered by teasing and small physical intimacies, yet learns to respect her independence and support her ambitions. He attributes his faithfulness partly to his father’s example and family upbringing 151 152 157 172 175.

Trivia

- Yun Zhaozhao abandons the idea of hiring him as a receptionist after realizing his family’s wealth; he later volunteers at the guesthouse front desk anyway 168.
- The temple’s head cooks privately regard him as its prospective live-in son-in-law, though this is their view rather than confirmation of a marriage 161.
