Arc 3The Dragon Emperor’s Raid

Zesi fought Golden Lion, declared himself the Dragon Emperor, and reunited with the Roger Pirates before breaking into Impel Down to free Bullet. He and Bullet escaped while leaving the other prisoners behind, and Navy reinforcements were sent to stop them.

  • The Five Elders paid Zesi for Brunei Wine but refused to ransom Jason, Youpi, and Lampkin, so Zesi took the three agents to train Shadow Wings.
  • Golden Lion attacked Zesi after Zesi had sunk most of his fleet, and their battle ended when Zesi’s awakened Tremor-Tremor Fruit clashed with Golden Lion’s power and Marine observers interrupted them.
  • After Roger’s execution began the Great Pirate Era, Zesi traveled to Sabaody, where he joined the Roger Pirates’ reunion and declared he would retrieve Bullet from Impel Down.
  • Zesi confronted Rosward on Sabaody, announced that he wanted the epithet Dragon Emperor, and refused to accept the World Government’s proposed alternative.
  • Zesi infiltrated Impel Down and defeated its guards, Jailer Beasts, and Warden Basen as he fought his way toward Infinite Hell.
  • Zesi found Golden Lion in Infinite Hell but refused to release him, then reached Bullet’s cell and shattered its seastone chains.

Chapters 51–75 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 51The five billion they refused to pay, and the hundred billion they gladly would

The Five Elders agreed to pay thirty billion Beli to ransom Akainu from the Brunei Family, but refused to spend five billion to rescue three CP9 agents. They also planned a huge custom-wine order to smooth relations with the family, and Kong left to inform Sengoku.

  • Kong reported that Zesi possessed the Tremor-Tremor Fruit and warned the Five Elders that war against him would be dangerous.
  • The Five Elders said Zesi’s Brunei Family origins made Wenlai Zesi easier to control and approved paying thirty billion Beli to secure Akainu’s return.
  • The Five Elders refused to pay five billion Beli for Jason and the other two CP9 agents, saying the World Government could replace them.
  • The Five Elders proposed ordering one million bottles of custom wine exclusively for the Celestial Dragons and the World Government.
  • Kong asked for wine for the Marines, and the Five Elders promised him one hundred thousand bottles before he left to notify Sengoku.

Ch. 52Be an instructor or clean toilets

Zesi told Jason and the other two that the World Government had abandoned them, then forced them to work for the Brunei Family to repay their five-billion-Beli ransom. He assigned them to train Shadow Wings, with their future jobs—and ability to repay their debts—depending on their results in three months.

  • Zesi visited Jason, Youpi, and Lampkin in the dungeon and told them the World Government had paid for Brunei Wine but refused to ransom them.
  • Zesi said the three men were worth five billion Beli to him and ordered them to work for the Brunei Family instead of killing them.
  • Zesi took Jason and the others to the Brunei Family's secret Shadow Wings training base and divided the trainees into three teams for them to lead.
  • Zesi set a three-month assessment: successful instructors would earn ten million Beli a month, while those who failed would clean toilets for one hundred thousand Beli a month.

Ch. 53The Golden Lion's fury

After learning that the World Government would not ransom Jason and the other two, Zesi put them in charge of training Shadow Wings. News of Zesi’s identity spread through the New World, and Golden Lion Shiki set out alone to confront him.

  • Zesi assigned Jason and the other two to train Shadow Wings using the World Government’s systematic methods, warning that he expected results.
  • New World nations learned that Zesi was Natural Disaster from the Roger Pirates and were relieved they had not provoked the Brunei Family.
  • Golden Lion Shiki heard news about Zesi and rushed out in fury to seek revenge.
  • Shiki’s subordinates realized he was going after Zesi and decided they could not reach the battle in time to join him.

Ch. 54It was nothing, really. I just sank most of his fleet with a tsunami

Zesi prepared to defend the Brunei Family’s island when Golden Lion arrived, seeking revenge for the fleet Zesi had sunk with a tsunami. After Zesi destroyed Golden Lion’s cloud lions and his identity as Natural Disaster of the Roger Pirates was recognized, Golden Lion launched a storm of sword slashes at him.

  • Zesi ordered Feiluo to evacuate the town after sensing Golden Lion’s approach.
  • Zesi admitted that he had sunk most of Golden Lion’s fleet with a tsunami.
  • Golden Lion’s cloud lions descended on the island, but Zesi flew up and blasted them apart with a punch.
  • The islanders realized Zesi was Natural Disaster of the Roger Pirates, and Golden Lion confronted him.
  • Golden Lion attacked Zesi with Lion: Slashing storm, while Zesi gathered his energy and Armament Haki into his sheathed sword.

Ch. 55What Made Natural Disaster Truly Terrifying

Marine Admiral Sengoku had secretly revealed Zesi’s whereabouts to Golden Lion so the Marines could test Zesi’s strength or benefit if he was injured. Zesi unleashed a devastating sword-drawing attack that shattered Golden Lion’s counter and struck his swords, leaving their clash unresolved.

  • Sengoku told Sakazuki that Zesi had never shown his true strength before and explained that the Marines had leaked Zesi’s whereabouts to Golden Lion.
  • Zesi drew his sword and unleashed Azure Dragon's Roar: Sword Draw, combining sword energy, Haki, and the Tremor-Tremor Fruit’s power into a flood-dragon slash.
  • Golden Lion answered with Lion's Majesty: Sword Ward, but Zesi’s attack broke apart his giant lion slash.
  • Golden Lion reinforced his twin swords with Armament Haki and blocked the flood-dragon slash, causing a tremendous collision that shook the sky.

Ch. 56Old Lion, You Can't Scare Me

Zesi overwhelmed Golden Lion with his combined swordsmanship, Haki, and Tremor-Tremor Fruit powers, then clashed with him using Conqueror's Haki. Golden Lion's Haki faltered from pain, allowing Zesi to overpower a large part of it.

  • Sengoku explained that Zesi had combined swordsmanship, Haki, and his Devil Fruit into a technique powerful enough to rival the era's greatest fighters.
  • Zesi's Azure Dragon's Roar: Sword Draw drove Golden Lion backward despite his full-strength Armament Haki.
  • Zesi followed with Riding the Six Dragons at the Proper Time, striking Golden Lion with hundreds of attacks and leaving three deep wounds.
  • Golden Lion hurled Zesi's azure dragon slash into the sky and unleashed his Conqueror's Haki, but Zesi met it without fear.
  • Zesi's Conqueror's Haki began to overwhelm Golden Lion's, and Golden Lion's Haki faltered when pain crossed his face.

Ch. 57Aerial battle and a shattered sword

Zesi drew Golden Lion away from the Brunei Family’s base, but Golden Lion’s Float-Float Fruit gave him the advantage in their aerial duel. Zesi’s sword shattered under Golden Lion’s slash, leaving him to face the fight without it.

  • Marine officers were astonished when Zesi’s Conqueror’s Haki suppressed Golden Lion’s, and Sengoku wondered whether Golden Lion’s injuries or the ship’s wheel on his head had weakened him.
  • Golden Lion charged at Zesi, who led him into the sky to keep their battle away from the Brunei Family’s base.
  • Sengoku recognized that Zesi’s choice to move the fight showed he cared about the Brunei Family and might restrain his use of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit.
  • Golden Lion caught up with Zesi, and the two fought at high speed in the air.
  • Golden Lion’s aerial control overwhelmed Zesi, while vibrations damaged the sword Zesi had been protecting with Armament Haki.
  • Golden Lion shattered Zesi’s sword with a single slash.

Ch. 58An impact that destroyed everything

Zesi awakened his Tremor-Tremor Fruit and attacked Golden Lion with Awakened Dragon's Roar. Golden Lion failed to overcome the attack and was forced to meet it head-on as their clash unleashed devastating power across the sky.

  • Golden Lion shattered Zesi's sword and unleashed a barrage of slashes, expecting to exploit his opponent's lost weapon.
  • Zesi awakened his Tremor-Tremor Fruit and blasted Golden Lion's slashes away with waves of vibration.
  • Zesi used Awakened Dragon's Roar, trapping Golden Lion in shock waves before a massive dragon's head surged toward him.
  • Golden Lion tried to block the dragon's head with a lion-shaped sword attack, but his attack began to crumble under Zesi's power.
  • Golden Lion struck again as the dragon's head broke through, and their collision unleashed a terrifying storm and distorted the surrounding space.

Ch. 59Oh No, We Miscalculated

Sengoku and the Marines witnessed Zesi unleash his Awakened Dragon's Roar against Golden Lion, revealing the full danger of his power. Both pirates left before their fight could reach a conclusion, and Sengoku returned to Marine Headquarters with a clearer assessment of Zesi's strength.

  • Sengoku and the Marines watched Zesi and Golden Lion clash, then saw Zesi use Awakened Dragon's Roar after his sword broke.
  • Sakazuki questioned whether he could ever catch up to Zesi after witnessing the attack's overwhelming power.
  • Sengoku explained that Golden Lion had likely survived because of his mastery of the Float-Float Fruit, and both fighters emerged without obvious injuries.
  • Golden Lion offered Zesi the vice-captain's position in an alliance, but Zesi said he wanted to be captain.
  • Golden Lion and Zesi noticed Sengoku's group and left, ending their fight before it became a battle to the death.
  • Sengoku regretted that the Marines' presence had interrupted the fight, then led his men back to Marine Headquarters to report.

Ch. 60Roger captured, the Great Pirate Era begins...

Zesi explained that Roger had surrendered because of his incurable disease and had no intention of rescuing him, while the Marines hunted the Roger Pirates and watched Zesi’s family. Golden Lion later attacked Marine Headquarters, and Roger’s execution in Loguetown began the Great Pirate Era.

  • Kate and Feiluo worried that Zesi might try to rescue Roger, but Zesi said Roger had turned himself in and planned to usher in a new era.
  • The Marines and World Government hunted the Roger Pirates, and Sengoku and the others severely injured Rayleigh before Hachi helped him escape.
  • Marines and CP0 agents watched the Brunei Family’s island and investigated Zesi, who stayed there and warned them not to cause trouble.
  • Golden Lion stormed Marine Headquarters and demolished half of it, but Sengoku and Garp defeated him and sent him to Impel Down.
  • Roger was executed in Loguetown, and his final words ushered in the Great Pirate Era.

Ch. 61The Pirate King's crew was gathering

Former Roger Pirates gathered on the Sabaody Archipelago, drawing bounty hunters into a fight and forcing them to flee. Reports placed the crew members on their way to Area 70, as rumors spread that the Pirate King's crew was assembling again.

  • Pirate Hunter Renault recognized Dark King Rayleigh in Area 13, and bounty hunters worried about the Marines' response to his presence.
  • Scopper Gaban fought off bounty hunters who tried to capture him and learn the route to Laugh Tale.
  • CB Gallant, Ganryu, Mr. Momora, and other Roger Pirates arrived to help Gaban, and the bounty hunters fled when they feared the whole crew was gathering.
  • Reports from Areas 21, 31, and 16 identified Roger Pirates heading toward Area 70, including Rayleigh, Gaban, and CB Gallant.

Ch. 62What the Hell Are These Guys Trying to Do?

Marine leaders discussed the Roger Pirates gathering at the Sabaody Archipelago and feared they were preparing to rescue Douglas Bullet or challenge the Marines. After learning Wenlai Zesi and his family had vanished, Kong ordered Borsalino to evacuate the Celestial Dragons and prepare for battle.

  • Sengoku reported that Wenlai Zesi had disappeared and might be headed for the Sabaody Archipelago, where Rayleigh, Gaban, and other Roger Pirates were gathering.
  • The Marine leaders recalled how they had captured Bullet after a costly Buster Call and feared the Roger Pirates could become a threat comparable to the Rocks Pirates.
  • Tsuru and Sengoku suspected the crew was responding to the Marines’ pursuit and had been summoned by Rayleigh or Zesi.
  • The Marines discovered Wenlai Kate had left the family a month earlier and that Zesi’s family had also disappeared.
  • Kong ordered Borsalino to go to the Sabaody Archipelago, evacuate the Celestial Dragons, and prepare for a major battle.

Ch. 63I have something to ask this Celestial Dragon to help with

Zesi confronted Celestial Dragon Rosward on Sabaody Archipelago and revealed that he planned to become a pirate captain. After Borsalino arrived to protect Rosward, Zesi refused to hand him over because he had something to ask the Celestial Dragon.

  • Rosward returned from the human auction house with a newly purchased pirate captain and ordered his guards to seize Zesi when he blocked the way.
  • Zesi released Conqueror's Haki, knocking out Rosward's guards and the surrounding civilians while leaving Rosward and the pirate captain conscious.
  • Zesi introduced himself as the former Natural Disaster and asked Rosward if he wanted to add a new pirate captain to his collection.
  • Borsalino attacked Zesi with a beam, but Zesi shattered it with a punch.
  • Borsalino asked Zesi to hand Rosward over, but Zesi refused because he had something to ask him.

Ch. 64Doing Whatever I Want? I Just Want a Different Epithet.

Zesi held Celestial Dragon Rosward and demanded that the World Government replace his epithet, Natural Disaster, with Dragon Emperor. Fleet Admiral Kong ordered Sengoku and Garp to go to the Sabaody Archipelago and stop Zesi from adopting an epithet the Celestial Dragons would never accept.

  • Zesi told Borsalino he wanted to change his epithet and have the newspapers announce the new one.
  • Zesi refused Borsalino's offer to handle the matter and said he would use Rosward's help instead.
  • Zesi declared that he wanted to reign over the seas like an emperor and chose the epithet Dragon Emperor.
  • Kong learned of Zesi's demand from Borsalino, while Tsuru and Sengoku wondered why Zesi had not asked for Douglas Bullet in exchange.
  • Kong ordered Sengoku and Garp to take men to Sabaody Archipelago and tell Zesi he could change his epithet, but not to Dragon Emperor.

Ch. 65Drop the question mark, please!

The Roger Pirates gathered at the Adam Smith Hotel, which Zesi had bought for their reunion. After arriving with the unconscious Celestial Dragon Rosward, Zesi left to bring Bullet back from Impel Down, astonishing Rayleigh and the others.

  • Gaban and the others arrived at the Adam Smith Hotel, where Shanks and Buggy greeted them in waiter uniforms and explained that Zesi had put them to work preparing for the reunion.
  • The Roger Pirates gathered in the hotel banquet hall, eating and drinking as they caught up.
  • Zesi arrived carrying the unconscious Celestial Dragon Rosward and asked Rayleigh to keep watch over him because Garp and Sengoku might come looking for him.
  • The group noted that Oden was in Wano Country and Bullet was imprisoned in Impel Down, so Zesi announced he would retrieve Bullet.
  • Zesi vanished before Rayleigh and the others could stop him, leaving Rayleigh amazed by how much Zesi had grown.

Ch. 66Zesi was attacking Impel Down!

Sengoku and Garp arrived at the Sabaody Archipelago to deal with Zesi and the hostage Saint Rosward, only to learn that Zesi had begun attacking Impel Down. The chapter ended with the prison guards discovering that its main gate had suddenly shattered.

  • Sengoku and Garp disembarked at the Sabaody Archipelago, where Borsalino reported that Saint Rosward was at the Adam Smith Grand Hotel with Rayleigh and the Roger Pirates.
  • Borsalino told Sengoku that two CP0 members had tried to rescue Saint Rosward, but Rayleigh had severely injured one of them and kept the Celestial Dragon in his hands.
  • Kong contacted Sengoku and reported that Zesi was attacking Impel Down.
  • The guards at Impel Down watched their main gate shatter without warning and found no explanation in the surveillance footage.

Ch. 67Finding Whoever Smashed Impel Down's Gates!

Zesi used the Tremor-Tremor Fruit to enter Impel Down unseen, but the beasts in Beast Hell tracked his scent and exposed his presence. After he knocked them unconscious with Conqueror's Haki, the Chief Jailer sent Jailer Beasts and jailers to surround him on the third level.

  • Zesi deflected the gazes of people and Surveillance Den Den Mushi to enter Impel Down unnoticed.

  • Zesi arrived on the third level and asked the assembled forces if they were waiting for him.

Ch. 68Tremble beneath Conqueror's Haki, wiped out with one punch

Zesi entered Impel Down’s third underground level to retrieve a friend, overwhelming its guards with Conqueror’s Haki. He defeated the four awakened Zoan Jailer Beasts with one punch and incapacitated the Chief Jailer before continuing deeper into the prison.

  • Zesi’s Conqueror’s Haki knocked down the jailers and terrified the Chief Jailer, who recognized him as Natural Disaster Zesi.
  • The Chief Jailer ordered the four Jailer Beasts to attack Zesi and alerted the prison warden and Chief Warden.
  • Zesi struck once with his Millionfold Tremor-Annihilation Fist, leaving all four awakened Jailer Beasts severely injured and collapsed.
  • Zesi appeared beside the Chief Jailer and touched his shoulder, leaving him bleeding and unable to pursue as Zesi continued deeper into Impel Down.

Ch. 69No one could stop his advance

Zesi stormed through Impel Down, effortlessly breaking its defenses as he headed for Infinite Hell. Magellan and Warden Basen prepared to confront him, with Basen declaring that no prisoner would escape his prison.

  • Impel Down's jailers reported that Zesi had defeated the Chief Jailer and Jailer Beasts and was advancing toward the lower levels.
  • Magellan ordered the routes sealed and the traps and guards mobilized to stop Zesi from reaching Infinite Hell.
  • Zesi shattered Seastone-reinforced cages, swept aside traps with vibrations, and knocked guards unconscious with his Conqueror's Haki.
  • Magellan learned that Warden Basen was on his way and complained that the Warden had taken too long to arrive.
  • Basen entered the monitoring room and vowed that Zesi would not escape Impel Down.

Ch. 70No one could stay conscious in his presence

Impel Down warden Basen learned that Wenlai Zesi had badly injured his four Jailer Beasts and was advancing toward Infinite Hell. Basen reached Freezing Hell first to intercept him, and Zesi arrived as the prisoners watched.

  • Basen learned that Zesi had defeated his four Jailer Beasts with one punch, leaving them seriously injured.
  • Basen refused to request reinforcements unless he was defeated and set out to stop Zesi from reaching Infinite Hell.
  • Magellan prepared to consider other countermeasures after Basen departed.
  • Basen rode the elevator to Infinite Hell, then climbed to Freezing Hell and silenced the frightened prisoners.
  • Zesi arrived in Freezing Hell, and Basen confronted him over the injuries to his pets.

Ch. 71I have a friend visiting Impel Down. I'm here to pick him up!

Zesi confronted Impel Down warden Yoland Basen, declaring that he had come to retrieve a friend. Basen transformed into a three-headed Cerberus and attacked Zesi, and their Haki clash left the fight unresolved.

  • The prisoners in Freezing Hell recognized Zesi as Natural Disaster from the Roger Pirates.
  • Zesi identified Basen as Hell's Gatekeeper and said he had come to pick up a friend.
  • Basen transformed into a towering three-headed wolfman whose heads could freeze prisoners, melt snow, and induce sleep.
  • Basen charged and slashed at Zesi, but struck only an afterimage.
  • Zesi appeared behind Basen and punched at him; Basen met the blow with a claw, and their Haki collided.

Ch. 72Impel Down trembled beneath Zesi's Conqueror's Haki

Zesi and Basen fought in Impel Down’s Freezing Hell, where Basen’s soul-freezing and other attacks challenged Zesi. Zesi unleashed Conqueror’s Haki amplified by his awakened Tremor-Tremor Fruit, knocking out prisoners and cracking cages and the ground.

  • Basen and Zesi exchanged advanced Armament Haki blows, and Basen grew furious when Zesi dismissed him as merely Impel Down’s warden.
  • Zesi retreated after Basen’s cold energy silently froze his soul and made his body rigid.
  • Basen attacked with a roar that caused drowsiness and a stream of corrosive green liquid, which Zesi dodged.
  • Zesi released powerful Conqueror’s Haki that shook Freezing Hell and awakened his frozen body with its vibrations.
  • The prisoners lost consciousness as the Haki cracked steel cages, and it sank and fractured the snowy ground beneath Zesi.
  • Zesi’s awakened Tremor-Tremor Fruit had infused his Conqueror’s Haki with high-frequency vibrations, giving it destructive force.

Ch. 73An awe like a prison, a demon god descended

Zesi overwhelmed Basen with his terrifying Conqueror's Haki and vibration attacks, defeating Impel Down’s warden. After reaching the sixth underground level, Zesi faced the prison’s remaining defenses as Magellan prepared to stall him until Marine reinforcements arrived.

  • Zesi gathered his Conqueror's Haki around himself, terrifying Basen and the prisoners with its oppressive aura.
  • Zesi struck Basen with Overclocked Quake Annihilation Fist, badly injuring him despite his Armament Haki.
  • Basen rapidly healed and attacked Zesi with several abilities, but Zesi countered with powerful vibration strikes.
  • Zesi continued battering Basen until the prison shook and Basen was defeated.
  • Magellan learned that Zesi had reached the sixth underground level and ordered troops and supplies concentrated on LV4 while Marine reinforcements were on their way.

Ch. 74Oh, isn't that Golden Lion?

Zesi entered Impel Down’s sixth underground level and subdued its notorious prisoners with his Conqueror’s Haki. He met Golden Lion but refused to free him, keeping the pirate’s Flying Fleet from becoming an obstacle to his own plans.
