Hirakawa Shin'un graduated from the Ninja Academy, formed Team 7 with Shiina Kō and Uchiha Yūichi, and traveled to the Land of Rain as war approached. After the team killed bandits on the road, Orochimaru tested Shin'un's combat instincts at the Konoha camp.

• Hirakawa Shin'un completed [Extreme Reaction], defeated Uchiha Yūichi in combat class, and later met Kushina Uzumaki when she transferred into his class.
• Shin'un befriended Kushina and helped her face bullying, while he began loading Lightning Release Mastery and trained in lightning techniques.
• Shin'un and Minato Namikaze discussed signs of an approaching war, and Shin'un warned his classmates that conflict in the Land of Rain could spark the Second Shinobi World War.
• Shin'un passed the graduation exam, received his forehead protector and identification, and joined Team 7 with Shiina Kō and Uchiha Yūichi under Jiraiya and Orochimaru.
• Shin'un and Minato led their new teams against bandits ambushing a supply convoy, and their squads killed the attackers.
• Shiina Kō recognized one of the dead bandits as her uncle and explained how his debts had burdened her family.
• Shin'un's team reached the Konoha camp in the Land of Rain and went to meet their teachers at the central tent.

Shin'un refined Lightning Wall into Lightning Ring Wall, earned promotion after killing an Iwagakure Jonin, and led his squad through dangerous missions. The arc left him accompanying Hatake Sakumo’s team on a mission to extract Yakushi Nonō from Sunagakure, after they attacked a Sand Ninja outpost.

• Orochimaru tested Shin'un, Shiina Kō, and Uchiha Yūichi with C-rank ninjutsu, and Shin'un transformed Lightning Wall into the offensive and defensive Lightning Release: Lightning Ring Wall.
• Orochimaru made Shin'un captain, accepted Lightning Ring Wall for an S-rank mission credit and twenty million ryo, then took the squad to destroy a Stone Ninja stronghold.
• During the attack, Shin'un fought an Iwagakure Jonin and killed him, while Yūichi defeated a Chunin and Shiina Kō suffered a broken thighbone.
• Orochimaru treated Shiina Kō and sent the Konoha ninja back, while Tsunade later confirmed Shiina Kō was healing and Orochimaru promoted Shin'un to Chunin.
• Orochimaru assigned Shin'un’s squad an urgent extraction mission with Hatake Sakumo, who revealed that a Konoha spy in Sunagakure needed rescue before her identity was exposed.
• Shin'un recognized the spy as Yakushi Nonō, and Hatake Sakumo led the team toward their rendezvous point while they crossed the Land of Rain.
• When scouts found a Sand Ninja outpost blocking their route, Hatake Sakumo chose to attack, and Shin'un used his lightning techniques to kill two defenders.
• Hatake Sakumo ordered the Anbu to clear and dismantle the outpost, while Shin'un and his teammates moved into a tree and Yūichi asked him for advice on improving.

Shin'un helped Hatake Sakumo escort Yakushi Nonō out of Sunagakure pursuit, then returned to Konoha and learned of his Senju ancestry. As the war intensified, Hiruzen Sarutobi promoted Shin'un to elite jonin and ordered him to lead reinforcements toward Nara Shikahito, while Tsunade asked him to take Nawaki along.

• Hatake Sakumo led Shin'un and a disguised team into a Land of Wind town to find Yakushi Nonō, then helped them escape when Da and Raku’s Sand Ninja surrounded them.
• Shin'un and his teammates fought off pursuing Sand Ninja, using his Lightning Release techniques and stored chakra to kill a Jonin before continuing to escort Yakushi Nonō toward Konoha.
• Hatake Sakumo and the Anbu reunited with Shin'un’s group, and they returned to Konoha, where Shin'un reunited with his parents before Suzume summoned him to the Hokage’s office.
• Hiruzen Sarutobi told Shin'un that his grandmother had belonged to the Senju Clan, and Tsunade took him to the Senju residence to receive secret medicine and meet the elders.
• The Senju elders confirmed Shin'un’s descent from their central branch, and Tsunade introduced him to Nawaki, who wanted to join the battlefield despite her wish to keep him safe.
• Shin'un tested the Senju Secret Medicine and found that it improved his chakra recovery and strength, then continued training with weights as the front-line situation worsened.
• Hiruzen Sarutobi ordered Tsunade to prepare Ibuse poison antidotes and lead reinforcements to Orochimaru, while promoting Shin'un to elite jonin and assigning him to lead over a thousand ninja to Nara Shikahito.
• Hiruzen Sarutobi sent Shimura Danzō and Root to the Land of Rain, while Tsunade asked Shin'un to take Nawaki to the Sand Ninja battlefield because she feared he would sneak to the front after she left Konoha.

Shin'un led Konoha forces against the Sand Ninja, then took a squad to steal intelligence from an outpost. The mission succeeded, but Dan Katō died from his wounds before Shin'un returned to camp.

• Shin'un led nearly a thousand Konoha ninja into the Land of Rain, where he killed Sand Ninja and helped turn back their assault on Konoha's defensive line.
• Shin'un found Nawaki shaken after his teammates died, then learned that Orochimaru was bringing two thousand reinforcements while Tsunade headed to another front.
• Nara Shikahito assigned Shin'un five squads to steal intelligence from a Sand Ninja outpost, with Nawaki and Dan Katō among the team.
• Dan Katō used the Spirit Transformation Technique to scout the outpost, and Shin'un led an assault that broke through its barrier so Nawaki's squad could seize the intelligence.
• As the Konoha group escaped, Shin'un found Dan Katō gravely wounded, killed the Sunagakure jonin Hirakawa and two chunin attacking him, and ordered a ninja to carry Dan.
• Sand Ninja ambushed the retreating Konoha ninja, but Shin'un's Lightning Net delayed their pursuers long enough for the group to escape and hide.
• Dan Katō stopped breathing and died despite the group's efforts, so Shin'un ordered his body sealed in a scroll and led the survivors back to camp.
• Shin'un, Yūichi, and Shiina Kō reached Konoha's camp and went to report to Nara Shikahito.
