Background / History

Raised by Sakumo

Kakashi was approximately one year old when Sakumo brought the orphaned Minazuki Yuzuru home. The boys grew up together in the Hatake household, training with swords by age three and later learning chakra control and ninjutsu from Sakumo 1 3 4.

Determined to become a great ninja like his father—and eventually surpass him—Kakashi entered the Ninja Academy early. Its basic curriculum offered little beyond what he already knew, and he requested graduation after less than two months 5 6 8.

Rejection of the Ninja Profession

Sakumo’s failed-mission controversy undermined Kakashi’s idealized view of being a ninja. After Yuzuru and Sakumo condemned the profession’s treatment of people as tools, Kakashi removed his forehead protector and asked Yuzuru to destroy it alongside Sakumo’s 25 26.

Leaving the profession did not end his training. Sakumo’s retirement gave him more time to instruct both boys, while Yuzuru encouraged Kakashi to learn Flying Thunder God. Sakumo also helped him develop Chidori, although its visual demands forced Kakashi to pursue safer techniques 27 28.

War and Departure from Konoha

Despite his civilian stance, Kakashi agreed to help Minato maintain order during the Chūnin Exams and subsequently accompanied him to the battlefield. He fought alongside Rin and Obito, but selectively followed orders: he accepted missions against enemy ninja rather than obeying the command structure without question 34 36.

Following Obito’s apparent death, Kakashi retained the Sharingan he had received rather than implanting it. He later handed the sealed eye to Yuzuru 37 38.

When Rin was made the Three-Tails’ host, Kakashi prepared to escape with her using Flying Thunder God. Yuzuru intervened, saved Rin, and took both of them away rather than returning to Konoha. Minato later found Kakashi’s discarded Flying Thunder God kunai and suspected that the pair had survived 38 39 41.

Building the Sea Capital

Kakashi trained with natural energy on Ten Thousand Fathom Peak before helping Yuzuru seize Kirigakure. He and Rin infiltrated the village to locate its leaders, participated in the attack on its leadership and defenders, and helped seal the village with the Four Violet Flames Formation 41.

As Sea Capital’s deputy army commander, Kakashi combined military work with recruitment and resettlement. He supplied information on surviving bloodline clans, brought Mie Uzumaki and Karin from the Land of Grass, and arranged their identification, housing, and introduction to Rin 45 49.

His later assignments included housing arrivals from Konoha, recruiting Guy into the Sea Capital Guard, escorting Orochimaru to his laboratory, and retrieving Nonō, Kabuto, and orphanage children with Minato. Yuzuru also assigned the pair to promote Scientific Ninja Tools and electric freight trains abroad 57 59 62 63 106.

Marriage and Later Campaigns

Kakashi and Rin became a couple and eventually married in a ceremony prepared by their family. They exchanged vows, kissed, and moved into their own home; Yuzuru provided Kakashi with a specially made blade as a wedding gift 125 228.

After Gaara’s capture and the extraction of the One-Tail, Kakashi accompanied Yuzuru to retrieve his body. In the Land of Rain, he confronted Obito, who noticed his wedding ring and asked about Rin 235.

Kakashi later fought alongside Guy and the Seven-Tails Jinchūriki in the conquest of Iwagakure. He killed Ōnoki, and their forces brought the Land of Earth under Sea Capital control 254.

Appearance

Kakashi has silver hair and is described as notably handsome when his face is uncovered 3 228.

Personality

Kakashi is exceptionally disciplined and competitive. As a child, he prefers returning home to train over taking a leisurely outing, and Yuzuru’s greater strength motivates him to work harder rather than discouraging him. His reputation as a genius rests on sustained effort as well as talent 2 9.

His reserved manner often appears aloof, particularly at the Academy, but he gradually acknowledges Guy as a genuine rival. Their friendship develops through demanding spars and contests, with Kakashi remaining the more dryly reluctant participant in Guy’s enthusiasm 5 33 78.

Disillusionment with the ninja system changes his priorities without erasing his loyalty to individuals. He remains concerned for Sakumo, seeks a way to save Minato and Kushina, and grows fiercely hostile toward Obito after learning of his attack on their family. He is much less interested in political scheming, preferring direct combat to elaborate plots 34 48 64 235.

Rin brings out a less composed side of him. At their wedding, Kakashi becomes visibly nervous and momentarily dazed, reacting with an awkwardness she has never seen from him before 228.

Hatake Kenjutsu and Lightning Blade Style

Kakashi retains and develops his family’s swordsmanship under Sakumo rather than abandoning it 28 235.
