Background / History

Family Losses and Hemophobia

Tsunade’s younger brother Nawaki and former lover Dan Katō died during the Second Shinobi World War. By the war’s end, she had developed hemophobia, although news of her condition was suppressed 6.

Her attachment to Konoha survived repeated bereavement. The village embodied her family’s work, and many of those closest to her had died protecting it. Although she recognized the village leadership’s failings, she could not easily abandon what her family had sacrificed to preserve 61 70 81.

Taking Yuzuru as Her Apprentice

Tsunade first met Yuzuru at Sakumo’s home, where she initially mistook him for a girl. Their exchange immediately became confrontational, establishing the blunt, argumentative tone of their later relationship 14.

After demonstrating the Rasengan, Yuzuru asked to study medical ninjutsu under her. Tsunade suspected ulterior motives but found his talent compelling; he became her first formal apprentice with Sakumo’s approval 15.

Her instruction extended beyond medicine. She supplied Water Release scrolls, recognized Yuzuru’s advanced chakra control, and gave him the Wood Dragon Technique as a reference for developing Ice Release. Her anatomical knowledge helped him make substantial progress on his Ice Dragon Technique, though differences between their bloodline abilities left some problems for him to solve alone 19 23.

Return to Konoha

After Yuzuru removed Minato, Kushina, the Nine-Tails, and numerous promising shinobi from Konoha, Tsunade returned out of concern for the weakened village. She and Jiraiya both refused Hiruzen’s request to become the Fifth Hokage 61.

She subsequently treated Konoha’s war wounded. Through Katsuyu, Yuzuru remained in contact and renewed his invitation for her to join him in the Sea Capital 70 72.

Her relationship with Konoha’s leadership deteriorated as Root expanded. After the Uchiha massacre, she suspected Root’s involvement and argued with Hiruzen; Jiraiya sided with him. Tsunade decided to leave, but Danzo hired Akatsuki to attack her and disclosed her hemophobia, allowing the attackers to exploit her condition 82.

Recovery in the Sea Capital

Yuzuru brought the shaken Tsunade to the Sea Capital, where she reunited with Orochimaru and Kushina. Learning that Yuzuru had eliminated Kirigakure and the daimyo’s rule forced her to confront the conflict between his reforms and her inherited loyalties. She did not agree to oppose him, but initially refused to give an explicit declaration of support 82 83 85.

When Yuzuru requested treatment for a kekkei genkai disease, she admitted that her hemophobia prevented her from practicing at her former level. She agreed to let him attempt treatment; a private test with a small cut confirmed that even a drop of blood still triggered trembling and panic 89.

Returning to clinical work, Tsunade agreed to compile information on rare medicines and unusual illnesses for Rin. After witnessing the Sea Capital’s development through Infinite Tsukuyomi, the counterpart questions the shinobi system she had spent her life protecting. She resolves to change her world and publicly calls for ending its misguided era, prompting Naruto, Sasuke, and the others to confront reform 181 186 187.

She helps explain the plan to overthrow the daimyo to reincarnated former leaders. When Yuzuru prepares to leave, she chooses to accompany him, telling Hashirama that she wants to live the rest of her life for herself. Mito gives her blessing, and Shizune joins her 190 195.

Meeting Her Other Self

The two Tsunades experience one another’s memories through Infinite Tsukuyomi. The older counterpart’s resentment over her harder life quickly becomes romantic rivalry, while Yuzuru’s teacher struggles with jealousy 197.

Despite their arguments, the younger Tsunade understands her counterpart’s suffering and arranges training for her: awaken Wood Release, learn senjutsu, and then merge her Senju and Uzumaki bloodlines. The counterpart fulfills the stated training prerequisites before reuniting with Yuzuru in the bamboo cabin 198 200 210.

By their later research together, both women possess thoroughly merged bloodline powers and jointly examine medical and physiological problems for Yuzuru 238 241.
