History
Formation and Emergence
The organization’s name originated during Kōki’s report about his encounter with Setsugetsu. When Jiraiya asked which organization the powerful strangers belonged to, Kōki invented “Light Organization” on the spot. Aizen had still intended to discuss the name, but accepted Kōki’s decision after receiving it 184 190.
Kōki described Setsugetsu as stronger than an ordinary Kage, hoping the threat would discourage Konoha from investigating. Instead, Jiraiya decided to report the organization to Hiruzen Sarutobi and arrange surveillance 184.
Aizen subsequently approached the Queen of Rōran, declaring that the organization intended to help the country prosper. Rōran later became its confirmed base, with Setsugetsu assigned to guard it and prepare the Dragon Vein 190 270.
Recovery of Roshi
After Iwagakure posted a mission through a bounty exchange, Aizen recognized that Ōnoki wanted help recovering Roshi from Konoha. Aizen, Setsugetsu, and Jörmungandr extracted the Four-Tails’ jinchūriki and fought the pursuing Minato and Jiraiya 205 210 214.
The operation ended with Roshi in the organization’s custody and Konoha’s pursuit defeated. At Red Rock Valley, Butō paid the remaining bounty and promised scrolls, adding five million ryō from the Tsuchikage 223 224.
Butō repeatedly proposed an alliance against Konoha. Aizen refused, recognizing that Iwagakure intended to use the organization as a weapon rather than treat it as an equal partner 224.
Root Campaign and the Uchiha Brothers
Hiruzen restored Root to Danzō after Danzō promised to eliminate the organization. Early attacks failed, leaving Root personnel dead and a frozen battlefield that Konoha recognized as Setsugetsu’s work 223 241.
Danzō then secured twelve Uchiha jōnin with three-tomoe Sharingan as reinforcements. Aizen had anticipated this escalation: he wanted the Uchiha drawn into the conflict so he could obtain an Uchiha body. His deception caused the attackers to strike Root’s own hidden sentries 244 250.
The organization captured Ryuko and Seika and manipulated their experiences through genjutsu to induce Mangekyō Sharingan awakenings. Ryuko destroyed a Root base with Susanoo before discovering Aizen’s involvement and being incapacitated 256 263 265.
Aizen’s group escaped with Ryuko and valuable supplies. Fugaku reported the loss of eleven outstanding Uchiha ninja, while Hiruzen temporarily removed Danzō’s authority over Root. Kōki later revealed his control of the organization to Ryuko and completed the Eternal Eyes 265 268.
Battle with Madara
Aizen’s group confronted Madara using Ice Release, Dark Release, and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Aizen also disclosed information about the Ōtsutsuki and the shared ancestry of the Uchiha and Senju, while refusing to explain the organization’s supposed ancient origins 285 286.
After the battle, the group salvaged research and a corpse believed to be Madara’s from his ruined base. Madara had survived, but told Obito that the fight had exhausted his remaining life force. Black Zetsu became wary of the organization’s knowledge and began investigating it 289 293.
Danzō’s Assassination
Kōki planned to exploit the Three-Tails incident to have the organization kill Danzō, making the attack appear to be retaliation for Root’s earlier campaigns. Beforehand, he sent Setsuna and Setsugetsu to negotiate with Chiyo for One’s Own Life Reincarnation as part of his promise to preserve Rin’s life 323.
Aizen and the others killed Danzō inside Root’s base, then encountered Fugaku’s Uchiha force while leaving Konoha. Aizen caught the group in Kyōka Suigetsu, but Shisui used his Mangekyō Sharingan to break the interference and defend his clansmen with Susanoo 327.
The subsequent investigation linked Danzō’s disappearance to the organization. Discovery of Kiri Oni’s infiltration explained the attack’s timing, dispelling Minato’s suspicion that Kōki or Obito had leaked information 330.
Campaign by the Great Villages
Rumors claiming that the organization possessed the Sage of Six Paths’ inheritance and Madara’s legacy prompted all five great villages to move against it. Kōki identified Black Zetsu as the likely source of the campaign. Minato assigned him to lead Konoha’s unit, unknowingly placing the organization’s controller in charge of pursuing it 335.
At the confrontation, Setsugetsu overwhelmed Kirigakure’s attackers, while Chiryū killed half of Iwagakure’s dispatched force with one attack. Aizen arrived with the remaining core members to demonstrate the organization’s strength and deter further interference 340.
Kōki staged his own opposition while protecting the organization’s interests. Setsuna’s Rinnegan battle with Nagato culminated in both using Chibaku Tensei, convincing the watching ninja to abandon the operation. The organization withdrew; Aizen’s genjutsu had left Kakashi, Shisui, and their companions mentally injured 340 346 347.
Orochimaru and the Final Conflict
Orochimaru secretly witnessed Kōki reuniting amicably with the organization and was captured by Aizen and Setsuna. Kōki offered him membership, and Setsuna showed him the organization’s secrets through genjutsu. The knowledge and possibility of immortality persuaded him to join 347.
Kōki and Orochimaru then spent years conducting research. During the later war, the Allied Shinobi Forces sought the organization’s help, but could not locate it until Queen Sara disclosed its presence in Rōran. At the base, Orochimaru explained that the organization’s core was Kōki himself 348.
Kōki ultimately appeared before Black Zetsu after completing his Six Paths breakthrough, intervening as the organization’s leader 348.
Abilities and Resources
Genjutsu and Infiltration
Aizen’s illusions support both battlefield control and long-term manipulation 250 265 330.
- Redirect enemy attacks onto their own allies 250.
- Orchestrate traumatic experiences to induce Mangekyō Sharingan awakenings 265.
- Plant a controlled operative inside Root 330.
- Inflict mental injuries even on Mangekyō-wielding Shisui 347.
- Limit: Shisui breaks Aizen’s mental interference during the encounter after Danzō’s assassination 327.
Specialized Combat Powers
The core combines several rare abilities rather than relying on a single shared fighting style 285 340.
- Ice elementalization: Setsugetsu can transform into ice, rendering most ordinary attacks ineffective; sufficiently powerful genjutsu remains a concern 180.
- Chakra theft and close combat: Jörmungandr pressures Minato with taijutsu and forces him to guard against chakra-stealing attacks 213 214.
- Large-scale Lava Release: Chiryū’s power and range greatly exceed Roshi’s unaided Lava Release 340.
- Advanced dōjutsu: Setsuna uses Susanoo, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan techniques 323 343 346.
Bases, Intelligence, and Research
- Rōran base and Dragon Vein: A protected operational site used in the organization’s preparations 270 348.
- Black-market network: Bounty exchanges provide missions, payments, and intelligence 205 335.
- Technique collection: Members can earn techniques through merit points; missions also bring scrolls and financial rewards 186 224.
- Madara’s research: Recovered from his ruined base 289.
- Six Paths research: Kōki’s central development project, later supported by Orochimaru 335 347 348.
External Relationships
- Konoha — Public enemy and repeated target, despite Kōki’s concealed control. His position in the village helps protect the organization from investigation 184 224 335.
- Iwagakure — Initially a paying client for Roshi’s recovery; later joins the campaign to seize the organization’s supposed secrets 224 335.
- Uchiha Clan — Seeks retaliation for its losses and recovery of the Sharingan held by the organization 265 335.
- Akatsuki — Rival force. Kōki deliberately encourages Nagato’s growth so Akatsuki can divert attention and pressure away from the Light Organization 344.
- Black Zetsu — Covert adversary who regards the organization as an obstacle and uses the great villages against it 335.
- Allied Shinobi Forces — Eventually seek its assistance against Madara and Black Zetsu’s forces 348.
Appearance
- White robes and masks identify the organization’s field operatives 323 340.
- Chiryū wears a demon mask 340.
- Concealed faces fuel speculation about defectors; Setsuna’s mask contributes to Konoha’s suspicion that he is an Uchiha traitor 340.
Fabricated Origins
- The organization is recent, not ancient. Aizen’s claims of a hidden historical background are explicitly fabricated 286.
- The supposed Ninshū lineage is false. Stories tracing the organization to the Sage of Six Paths later circulate as black-market rumors, encouraging villages to pursue its alleged inheritance 335.
- The name was improvised. Kōki chose it before Aizen could complete the planned naming discussion 184 190.
