Background / History

Childhood and Hiruzen’s Tutelage

Orochimaru lost his parents as a child, an experience he credits with making him mature early. His exceptional talent and composed temperament made him Hiruzen Sarutobi’s most prized disciple 129 319.

Hiruzen taught him ninjutsu and forbidden techniques without reservation, even granting him access to the restricted Scroll of Seals. He initially intended to groom Orochimaru as his successor, but became concerned when his student’s appetite for knowledge continued to grow 6 77 319.

Wood Release Experiments

Orochimaru envied the advantages of exceptional bloodlines and sought to reproduce their power in his own body. After Hiruzen refused his request to research Wood Release cells, he began associating with Danzō and conducted human experiments through Root 6 163 319.

The experiments transplanted Hashirama Cells into children. When ordinary subjects failed, the researchers sought children from unusual and ancient bloodlines. Orochimaru believed that every subject had died and abandoned the project as a failure 318.

Kōki Itō was among those subjects. Hiruzen’s investigation found him alive, but Hiruzen did not punish Orochimaru out of lingering affection for his student. Nevertheless, the experiments convinced him that Orochimaru was unfit to become Hokage 6 319.

Command Against Sunagakure

After Jiraiya declined the command, Hiruzen appointed Orochimaru commander-in-chief of two thousand ninja defending against Sunagakure, with Shikaku Nara as adviser. Orochimaru privately welcomed the war because his research had lacked fresh material 5 6.

Learning that Kōki would join the front as a genuine Wood Release inheritor excited him more than the accompanying thousand reinforcements. Initially unaware that Kōki was his former subject, he assigned him to the medical units, allowing closer observation while preserving Wood Release as a battlefield trump card 111 113.

Event Orochimaru’s involvement
First clash with Rasa Withstood Gold Dust Great Wave using Triple Rashomon, then poisoned Rasa through a concealed combination of snake blood. Rasa escaped and ordered a retreat 118 119 120.
Chiyo’s poison crisis Could identify the toxin’s effects but could not neutralize it. Requested Tsunade’s assistance and prepared an offensive supported by a raid on Sunagakure’s rear 121 123.
Antidote breakthrough Witnessed Kōki’s antidote restore a poisoned shinobi and ordered its production under Kōki’s guidance 129.
Konoha counterattack Ordered a retreat before Konoha’s forces turned to fight alongside roughly one thousand arriving reinforcements 133.
Pursuit and standoff Pursued the wounded Rasa with the Kusanagi Sword, then faced Chiyo without yielding to her challenge. Neither side resumed battle 135.
Joint offensive with Kōki Assigned Kōki to independent battlefield operations. Their subsequent offensive severely injured Chiyo and Rasa, but Orochimaru halted pursuit upon learning that the One-Tail Jinchūriki was approaching 147 164.
Decisive battle Fought Ebizo while Kōki confronted Rasa and Bunpuku. Sunagakure’s withdrawal and barrier trap left him fearing for Kōki’s survival 167 171.
Sunagakure’s surrender Deferred Chiyo’s requests to a negotiating team that Konoha would send to settle reparations 176.

During the campaign, Orochimaru recognized Kōki as a former experimental subject. He indirectly invited him to discuss his bloodline after the war, but Kōki postponed deciding whether cooperation was worth the risks 163 164.

Kumogakure and Kirigakure Fronts

On the Kumogakure front, Orochimaru fought A while Kōki engaged Killer B. When A left their battle to assist B, Orochimaru attacked the exposed Kumogakure troops, forcing A to return and contain him 227 228.

Kirigakure’s approaching invasion made a quick victory increasingly urgent. Orochimaru accepted Kōki’s claim that he had mastered Sage Mode and revised the battle plan around his strength. A later attempt to exploit A’s absence with giant snakes was stopped by an arriving fighter 271 273.

After the Third Raikage’s death, Orochimaru wanted to continue pursuing Kumogakure, but obeyed orders to move toward the Land of Bears. He interpreted Hiruzen’s restraint as evidence that age had weakened his former teacher, reinforcing his own rejection of mortality 277.

Against Kirigakure, Orochimaru oversaw operations and assigned Kōki to stop the Seven Ninja Swordsmen’s attacks on Konoha’s supply lines. He praised Kōki’s rapid completion of the mission despite Juzo Biwa and Suikazan Fuguki escaping. He also helped Minato seal the Three-Tails inside Rin 297 302 304.

Failed Hokage Bid and Defection

Orochimaru lost the election for Fourth Hokage to Minato Namikaze. Although the position was not his highest ambition, he had believed it was his to claim; losing to a younger ninja further weakened his attachment to Konoha 318.

He subsequently invited Kōki to a hidden base in the Forest of Death. There, he revealed experimental records linking the Itō Clan to the Sage of Six Paths and proposed that this ancestry explained Kōki’s survival. His actual objective was to obtain Kōki’s cells, combining that bloodline with Hashirama Cells for research 318.

Orochimaru attacked with an elongated neck and fangs, secured the cells, and activated the base’s escape traps. Kōki restrained him with Wood Release, but explosions destroyed the base and allowed him to flee. Unknown to Orochimaru, Kōki had deliberately weakened his restraints, intending to benefit from whatever research Orochimaru produced 318 319 320.

After Hiruzen disclosed Orochimaru’s earlier human experiments, Minato issued a bounty. Orochimaru became Konoha’s first S-rank missing-nin since the Third Shinobi World War 319.

Joining the Light Organization

Orochimaru secretly followed the Light Organization and witnessed Kōki speaking amicably with its members. Aizen detected him, and Setsuna pulled him from hiding with Banshō Ten’in 347.

Kōki offered him membership, and Setsuna revealed the organization’s secrets through genjutsu. Its knowledge and promise of immortality convinced Orochimaru to join eagerly. He disregarded Kōki’s warning against betrayal, privately believing that immortality would eventually give him the freedom to leave 347.

Appearance

  • Long, slender tongue: Frequently extends it to lick the corner of his mouth, including when intrigued by Rasa’s Magnet Release and Kōki’s cells 118 318.
  • Sharp fangs: Reveals two fangs when attacking Kōki’s neck 318.
  • Distinctive voice: Speaks in a cold, hoarse or raspy voice 111 113.

Personality

Orochimaru is outwardly calm, composed, and difficult to read. He conceals flashes of greed and curiosity when meeting Kōki, but discoveries involving rare powers can visibly disrupt his usual reserve. His interests encompass bloodline inheritance, ninjutsu, the human body, and immortality 111 113 163 347.

His research ambitions repeatedly override concern for others. He experiments on children, views war as a source of material, and attacks Kōki for cells despite knowing he cannot defeat him. He plans around that disadvantage rather than expecting a straightforward victory 6 318.

He nevertheless takes battlefield command seriously. He anticipates raids, prepares contingencies, verifies Kōki’s capabilities before risking a defensive gap, and recognizes the importance of keeping his promises. His early wartime conduct also retains a genuine attachment to Konoha, which deteriorates before his defection 114 117 123 130 271.
