Appearance

  • Academy years: Wears goggles 6.
  • After Kannabi Bridge: Half his body is initially wrapped in bandages during treatment. His recovered face is half intact and half scarred 282 320.
  • Undercover identity: Wears a spiral-patterned mask and a black robe 296 320.
  • Dōjutsu: His awakened Sharingan initially has two tomoe; its Mangekyō form bears a scythe-shaped pattern 281 295.

Personality

Obito is initially cheerful, optimistic, rash, and easily provoked. He takes great pride in the Uchiha name and repeatedly insists that awakening the Sharingan will allow him to surpass his rivals. His confidence contrasts with his poor Academy results and sensitivity to embarrassment, especially in front of Rin 7 8 279 281.

His loyalty to his comrades outweighs obedience to shinobi rules. He refuses to abandon Rin for a mission and openly calls the White Fang a hero, challenging the beliefs that govern Kakashi’s conduct. Minato particularly values Obito’s kindness, politeness, willingness to help others, and embodiment of the Will of Fire 280 321.

Kōki’s simulated visions of a disastrous future make Obito more cautious and calculating without extinguishing those loyalties. As an infiltrator, he convincingly performs the role of a despairing successor to Madara, conceals his hatred of Zetsu, and postpones revenge rather than jeopardize his mission 290 291 296. His attachment to Rin nevertheless remains a vulnerability: concern for her repeatedly overrides his composure 290 320.

Abilities & Skills

Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique

  • An established specialty before he awakens the Sharingan. His fireball matches the size of Kōki’s during their Academy spar 7.
  • Destroys a barrage of sharpened bamboo poles during an Iwagakure ambush 280.

Sharingan

  • Awakens directly with two tomoe, prompting White Zetsu to reconsider his dismissive assessment of Obito’s talent 281.
  • Detects an enemy whom neither Obito nor Kakashi could previously locate through the Camouflage Concealment Technique 281.
  • One of his eyes is entrusted to Kakashi, who regards it as a memento and a promise to witness Konoha’s future on Obito’s behalf 303 308.

Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui

  • Awakens through the despair of witnessing Rin’s apparent death 295.
  • Uses Kamui to enter Konoha secretly while avoiding Black Zetsu’s notice 320.
  • Can control tailed beasts, according to Kōki. Obito confirms this capability and cites Madara’s notes describing his control of the Nine-Tails 322.

Hashirama-Cell Compatibility

  • Accepts cultivated Hashirama tissue without rejection 282.
  • The transplanted tissue preserves his life despite catastrophic damage to half his body 282.

Infiltration and Deception

  • Feigns unconsciousness and stages a confused awakening before Madara and White Zetsu 293.
  • Persuades the spiral-faced White Zetsu and Black Zetsu that Rin has died and that he genuinely supports the Eye of the Moon Plan 296.
  • Restricts contact with Kōki to reduce the risk of exposure, although later visits to Konoha eventually attract Black Zetsu’s suspicion 320 348.

History

Academy Years and Team Minato

Teacher Ikeda selects Obito to spar with the newly arrived Kōki because Obito finished last in class the previous term. Obito introduces himself as a future Hokage, but Kōki provokes him about Rin, humiliates him with the Thousand Years of Death, and ultimately leaves him unconscious. Afterward, Obito attributes his loss to carelessness and promises a rematch once he awakens his Sharingan 7 8.

His rivalry with Kakashi is equally combative. Their arguments repeatedly force Rin to intervene, and both readily use each other’s defeats by Kōki as ammunition 12 184. Hiruzen assigns Obito and Rin to Minato alongside Kakashi partly because their existing bonds may help change Kakashi’s outlook 35.

Madara’s Chosen Successor

Madara identifies Obito’s unusually intense attachments as the foundation for a powerful Mangekyō Sharingan. White Zetsu initially sees little promise in a boy occupied with missions, arguments with Kakashi, and fantasies about Rin 33 178.

To pressure him into developing, Madara orders White Zetsu to direct Iwagakure units toward Team Minato. These attacks leave Obito injured without initially awakening his Sharingan, leading Madara to demand stronger enemies and greater pressure 178 270.

Kannabi Bridge Mission

During an Iwagakure ambush, Obito intercepts an overhead attack with his Great Fireball Technique, but another enemy abducts Rin. Kakashi insists on completing their mission first. Obito punches him, rejects the abandonment of comrades, and leaves to rescue her alone 280.

His words shake Kakashi’s convictions. Kakashi follows and saves him from an ambush, then loses an eye protecting him. Overwhelmed by guilt but strengthened by memories of Rin’s encouragement and his reconciliation with Kakashi, Obito awakens his Two-Tomoe Sharingan and kills the concealed attacker 280 281.

Obito is subsequently pinned beneath a rock and tells his companions to leave. He entrusts a Sharingan to Kakashi and is reported dead, becoming remembered in Konoha as a hero. White Zetsu instead retrieves him, and Madara’s Hashirama-derived tissue keeps him alive 281 282 289 303.

Rescue and the Undercover Agreement

Obito awakens in Madara’s cavern but initially dismisses the old man’s claim to be the long-dead Uchiha leader. When the Light Organization confronts Madara, Obito trusts his rescuer over an organization he understands to have harmed Konoha. He also angrily defends Uchiha supremacy when Aizen discusses the Ōtsutsuki and the clans’ shared ancestry 282 283 286.

After the confrontation, Kōki rescues Obito and secretly subjects him to genjutsu depicting possible future events. Within these visions, Madara’s manipulation leads to Rin’s death, the deaths of Minato and Kushina, and Obito’s participation in a devastating war. Obito interprets the experience as a potentially prophetic nightmare rather than recognizing Kōki’s intervention 289 290.

Kōki uses that fear to propose infiltration: Obito will appear to become Madara’s successor while working against his plans. Obito accepts, both to protect Rin and Kakashi and to acquire the strength to safeguard them himself. They agree to keep the arrangement from Konoha initially and inform Minato first 291 292.

Mangekyō Awakening and False Defection

Back with Madara, Obito pretends to accept his concern while recognizing the manipulation behind it. When White Zetsu reports that Rin and Kakashi are in danger, he understands that Madara has prepared another trap. He accepts the spiral-faced White Zetsu’s assistance and rushes to the battlefield 293 294.

Seeing Kakashi drive Chidori through Rin overwhelms even his foreknowledge. Believing that Kakashi has betrayed him and Kōki has failed their agreement, Obito awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan and nearly abandons his undercover mission 295.

The sight of Kōki treating Rin brings him back to his senses. He leaves without revealing himself, then tells White Zetsu that Rin is beyond saving and that he wants Madara to teach him how to resurrect her. His performance convinces Zetsu that he has genuinely fallen into despair 296.

Finding Madara dead, Obito questions Black Zetsu about the Eye of the Moon Plan. He learns about the Ten-Tails, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and Nagato’s role as the host of Madara’s Rinnegan. Rather than attack Zetsu immediately, he resolves to maintain his cover and undermine Madara’s arrangements at a decisive moment 296.

Akatsuki and Secret Returns to Konoha

Obito and Black Zetsu monitor Nagato’s group, and Obito begins insisting that Zetsu address him as “Madara.” Witnessing further shinobi treachery reinforces his determination to remain undercover until he can eliminate the threat completely 314.

He later slips into Konoha with Kamui to celebrate Minato’s accession as Fourth Hokage and see Rin and Kakashi. During discussions with Kōki and Minato, Rin’s continued survival becomes a security concern: Black Zetsu could use her against him again. Kōki proposes faking her death, while Obito helps explain the Mangekyō’s ability to control tailed beasts during planning 320 321 322.

Exposure and the War Against Akatsuki

After Akatsuki’s collection of eight tailed beasts drives the villages to form the Allied Shinobi Forces, Obito attempts to assassinate Nagato and prevent war. He fails against the Rinnegan and reveals Madara’s conspiracy, but Nagato remains unmoved 348.

Yahiko and Konan rescue him before he can be executed. They explain that Black Zetsu took control of Nagato after he considered abandoning the tailed-beast collection. Obito also learns that his repeated visits to Konoha, followed by the discovery that Rin is alive, allowed Black Zetsu to uncover his betrayal 348.

After recovering, Obito approaches the Allied Shinobi Forces during their struggle against the reincarnated Madara. He recommends locating Kōki and the Light Organization, revealing that the organization had previously defeated Madara and giving the alliance renewed hope 348.
