Background / History

Desert Survival and Meeting Sisi

Li Le arrives in the desert wearing Rathalos-print pajamas. He identifies his new surroundings as the world of Monster Hunter after finding an abandoned camp and recognizing the Hunter’s Guild emblem. He survives by gathering food, salvaging supplies, and avoiding an elderly Cephalos that follows him through the desert 1.

A sandstorm forces him into ancient ruins, where he discovers a juvenile Ahtal-Ka apparently pinned beneath a pillar. The insect shares its prey with him and leaves him unharmed. After it destroys his basket, Li Le makes a replacement from insect silk and inadvertently teaches it to weave. He later discovers that it can move freely and deliberately returns beneath the pillar to rest 1 2.

Li Le refuses to betray the creature that protected him, but also fears the hunters it might kill after growing up. He invites it to experience a different life with him. His shouting attracts Old Geezer, and the Ahtal-Ka emerges from the ruins to rescue him. The two drive the Cephalos away and begin traveling together 3.

Dondorma and Hunter Qualification

After meeting Sanhua and Lan Rui, Li Le joins an Apceros hunt and travels with them to Dondorma. Lan Rui directs him to the Kinsect Research Institute, where Holo initially considers his companion unsuitable as a Kinsect because of her size, lack of wings, and low aggression 3 5 6.

Li Le becomes the institute’s chief gathering officer after bringing back an enormous shipment of insects. Concerned that he is falling behind his companion, he asks Sara to train him as a hunter. He practices Insect Glaive techniques, develops coordinated essence extraction with Sisi, and spends two further months preparing for the admission assessment 8 9 10.

Despite the examiners’ doubts about Sisi, both qualify. Li Le finishes third overall and then joins Lan Rui on his first official hunt, killing Old Geezer and completing the Cephalos liver contract 11 12 14 17.

Val Habar and New Companions

When Sara discusses the dangers surrounding Val Habar, Li Le decides to travel there with Sisi rather than remain in Dondorma. He teaches her and the Felynes to reinforce her constructions with stronger materials, then leaves aboard a pedal cart. At an outpost, the party acquires the battered sandship Sandworm, which Li Le reinforces with gathered bones 18 19.

During an urgent Seltas commission, Li Le encounters an injured specimen attracted by Sisi’s scent on his body. After testing its willingness to coexist with people, he accepts it as a companion and names it Bug Brother. A pursuing Seltas Queen subsequently endangers the group and destroys Sisi’s miniature Ahtal-Neset. Li Le helps both insects recover their confidence afterward 23 24 25 27.

Back in Val Habar, he submits an ecological report identifying Bug Brother as a special Seltas—acting as both the subject’s owner and the certifying scholar. He then organizes shipwreck salvage to obtain materials for a larger, land-walking Ahtal-Neset modeled after a Seltas Queen 27 28.

Cathar and the Sea Voyage

Li Le forms the Ahtal-Neset Engineering Team and travels to Cathar to seek professional help with the machine’s components. He proposes employing local craftsmen to teach the Felynes smithing, while Gemma revises the team’s designs and supplies heavy metal climbing components 32 33 34.

After hunting a Gypceros with Sisi, Li Le receives a letter and 50,000z from Sara. The Guild has rejected the additional research budget, so Sara provides the money from his personal savings 36.

As the Hunter Caravan prepares to cross the sea, Li Le also readies the Sandworm for the coming danger. Gemma’s custom Dragonator is installed aboard the ship, and he orders it to sail because he fears for Sisi’s survival during the approaching calamity 37.

Appearance

  • Initial clothing: Pajamas printed with a chibi Rathalos, supplemented by a sun hat made from tattered canvas 1.
  • Improvised desert outfit: Converts his badly damaged pajama top into a shawl after Old Geezer wounds his back 3.
  • Training changes: Develops noticeably stronger arms and callused palms through Sara’s regimen and repeated weapon practice 9 13.
  • Hunter equipment: Initially wears standard Hunter’s Armor; later obtains Kecha Wacha armor resembling a martial opera costume 16 33.

Personality

Li Le is cautious about danger without being indifferent to others. His first encounters with monsters leave him openly frightened, and he abandons the idea of testing triple extracts on a large monster after remembering Sara’s warning. He also declines to pursue a potentially valuable first report on the Seltas Queen because the risk is too high 2 10 25.

Loyalty drives many of his decisions. He will not sell out Sisi after she shelters and feeds him, and his determination to become a hunter comes from wanting to keep pace with her. Once Bug Brother joins the team, Li Le explicitly accepts responsibility for his safety 3 8 25.

His encouragement is practical rather than purely reassuring. After Sisi loses her construction, he explains how better materials and continued growth will make future Ahtal-Nesets stronger. He also recognizes that technical planning alone is insufficient: his companions need confidence as well as training 27.

He frequently uses jokes and game terminology to cope with unfamiliar circumstances. Sara corrects his description of essence enhancement as “lighting up,” while Li Le jokingly attributes his bond with Sisi to his “extraordinary presence” 9 22.

Abilities & Skills

Insect Glaive Combat

Li Le trains under Sara in ground combinations, vaults, aerial attacks, and coordinated fighting with a Kinsect. His examination performance earns praise for its precision, fluidity, and polish 9 13.

  • Uses Leaping Slash, Rising Slash Combo, Diagonal Slash, Double Slash, and Tornado Slash 13 17 36.
  • Chains aerial strikes and vaults to reposition around a target 13.
  • Learns that actual monsters create recoil and balance problems absent from training targets; Old Geezer’s skull nearly throws him out of position 17.
  • Performs Ahtal-Neset Vault by combining a glaive vault, Sisi’s silk, and a second leap from the machine itself 36.

Monster Essence Enhancement

Sisi gathers essence in silk bundles and delivers it to the Insect Nesting Band on Li Le’s forearm. The band injects the essence into his body 10.

  • White extract: Makes his body feel lighter, improves movement, and relieves accumulated leg fatigue 10.
  • Red extract: Greatly expands his range of motion and supports broad, forceful attacks, but also encourages aggression 10.
  • Combined extraction: Receives red and white essence from separate wounds during the Old Geezer hunt 17.
  • Finite supply: Repeated extraction weakens the source monster; depleted essence becomes less concentrated and provides shorter enhancement 10.
  • Overload risk: A large dose of Seltas Queen red extract causes trembling, swollen muscles, prominent blood vessels, and a destructive urge. Li Le regains control by recalling Sara’s teachings and forcibly calming himself 26.

Armor-Activated Skills

Li Le learns to recognize and accommodate the perceptions and physical changes produced by armor skills 16 33.

  • Hunter’s Life: Heightens awareness of terrain, fish movements, earthworms, and cooking cues 16.
  • Combining affinity: Senses a faint combining-related activation in Hunter’s Armor, but does not demonstrate fully activating it. Lan Rui explains that sufficient personal skill can compensate for incomplete armor activation 16.
  • Water Attack +1: Activated by his Kecha Wacha armor 33.
  • Constitution +1: Reduces stamina consumption and, when properly activated, makes movement feel lighter and more agile 33.
  • Spirit’s Whim: Makes gathering tools less likely to break 33.

Crafting and Engineering

Li Le contributes construction methods, material selection, and project organization, while Sisi supplies silk manipulation and the Felynes assist with fabrication 18 22 33.

  • Weaves baskets and carrying nets from insect silk 2 5.
  • Teaches Sisi basic weaving and explains why stronger materials are necessary for larger moving constructions 2 18.
  • Reinforces the Sandworm with bones and organizes shipwreck salvage for Ahtal-Neset components 19 28.
  • Learns to operate the land-walking Ahtal-Neset’s silk-thread controls from inside its shell 28.
  • Relies on specialists such as Laude and Gemma when designs exceed the team’s existing manufacturing skills 32 33.

Fieldcraft and Monster Handling

Li Le combines his prior knowledge of Monster Hunter with observation and experimentation in the field 1 3 10.

  • Uses maps, tracks, monster sounds, and environmental traces to plan routes and identify threats 1 3 25.
  • Treats wounds with medicinal leaves and learns to combine Potions from a beginner’s book 3 11.
  • Makes oversized secret-recipe paintballs sturdy enough for Sisi to swing and launch with silk 11 17.
  • Uses silvervine and a Pawprint Stamp to obtain assistance from wild Melynx 23.
  • Recognizes pheromones as the cause of changes in insect behavior and uses fragrant powder, false trails, and deodorant to manage scent-related threats 18 24 25 26.
