| Coordinated Ahtal-Neset Vault | 36 | Supports Li Le’s combined extract-assisted vault, silk pull, and leap from the Ahtal-Neset during combat with a Gypceros. |
Appearance
Sisi is a juvenile golden insect monster whose initially dull shell shines iridescently in direct sunlight 2 3.
- Eyes: Elongated purple compound eyes that flicker during communication and reactions 2 3.
- Limbs: Four black walking legs and two hooked, sickle-like forelimbs 2.
- Tail: A claw-shaped tail that produces golden silk 2.
- Head: A golden crown-like structure 11.
- Size: Initially does not reach the pursuing Cephalos’s knees; subsequently grows noticeably while being raised by Li Le 3 10.
- Flight: Wingless and unable to fly; too large to perch on a hunter’s arm like an ordinary Kinsect 4 5 6.
Personality
Sisi is unusually gentle toward humans. She shares insect prey with Li Le before they become companions and later gives him a rusted bolt from her treasured collection. Holo describes her as capable of friendly coexistence with humans, although she worries that prolonged human company could leave Sisi insufficiently prepared for dangerous monsters 2 3 7 9.
Her curiosity centers on construction and transformation. Basket weaving, altered clothing, ships, buildings, and Sophia’s sewing machine all attract her attention. She learns rapidly by observation, but can become discouraged when her work fails or when she believes Li Le disapproves 2 3 6 22.
Sisi is protective and eager for recognition. She leaves the ruins after hearing Li Le call for help and later nearly interferes with his suspended training because she thinks he needs rescuing. Her competitive streak becomes especially clear when she insists on demonstrating that she can imitate Nerscylla’s pendulum movement 3 9 30.
Abilities & Skills
Sickle Claws and Physical Strength
- Cuts a bound Vespoid in half deeply enough to leave a straight mark in the stone beneath it 2.
- Wounds the much larger Cephalos that attacks Li Le 3.
- Pierces Apceros shell and kills a charging Apceros by crossing both sickle claws through its skull 5.
- Carries an enormous insect-filled silk bag despite its size being far greater than her own 8.
- Pulls a mechanical wyvern’s platform across sand during her qualification test 13 14.
Silk Production and Manipulation
Sisi uses strong, naturally adhesive silk for construction, restraint, transport, and communication with Li Le 2 5 9.
- Weaving: Produces mesh, bags, and bindings after learning from Li Le 2 3 7.
- Adhesion: Glues movable model joints and seals gaps in the Ahtal-Neset’s shell 9 28.
- Hauling: Retrieves stored components and moves heavy structures through silk attached to her sickle claws 3 13.
- Restraint: Supplies silk used to secure prey, eggs, and equipment 5 6.
- Limit: Strong silk does not prevent weaker lumber, fittings, or rock anchors from failing under load 18 30 34.
Extract Essence
Sisi collects monster extracts through sticky silk rather than the mouthparts or wings used by conventional Kinsects 9 10.
- Places adhesive silk over a wound to capture its mist-like essence 9.
- Throws the extract-bearing silk onto Li Le’s Insect Nesting Band, then uses tension and a severed strand’s recoil to compress the extract into its injection port 10.
- Practices collecting white, yellow, and red extracts from boars and Apceros 10.
- Passes an examination using four colors of powder as substitutes for monster extracts 13.
- Supplies red extract during combat with the Seltas Queen and Gypceros 26 36.
- Requires coordination and accurate aim; an early practice shot lands on Sara’s face 9.
Pheromones and Scent Response
- Releases fragrant, pale yellow vapor that draws insect prey into the ruins 2.
- Her presence increases nearby Kinsects’ activity, aggression, and viciousness; Sara warns that excessive exposure can harm them 18.
- Pheromones lingering on Li Le attract the injured Seltas later named Bug Brother 24.
- Responds to Power Nectar carried in Li Le’s marking shots as an attack cue 13 29.
- Can misidentify the intended opponent when nearby combatants and marked targets become separated 30.
- Is repelled by the Seltas Queen’s foul pheromones; Li Le clears them from her with a deodorant ball 26.
Engineering and Ahtal-Neset Control
Sisi assembles external beast-shaped machines from gathered components, binding and operating them with silk 2 28.
- Recreates ships and monsters from observation, including boars, Apceros, Cephalos, and the Seltas Queen 9 10 18 28.
- Incorporates useful anatomy even from a monster she dislikes, as shown by her Seltas Queen-based design 28.
- Operates individual joints, hatches, shell sections, and the tail through separate silk-thread controls 28.
- Uses the larger Ahtal-Neset to charge, stomp, kick, tow a wagon, and shelter passengers 28 29 30.
- Learns climbing and attempts pendulum attacks after observing other monsters 30 34.
- Remains limited by her growth, available materials, structural strength, and endurance; Li Le explicitly tests travel endurance before relying on the machine for a hunt 27 28 34.
History
Desert Ruins and Partnership
Li Le first finds Sisi apparently trapped beneath a fallen pillar while sheltering from a sandstorm. He soon discovers that she can move freely and deliberately lowers the pillar over herself again. While sharing the hall and its insect prey, he teaches her basket weaving, which she quickly adapts into usable mesh 1 2.
Sisi initially hesitates at the ruins’ entrance when Li Le invites her to leave. His cries for help during a Cephalos attack bring her into the sunlight, where she wounds the attacker and helps drive it away. She then retrieves her collection of rusted parts and joins him on his journey 3.
Research and Kinsect Qualification
In Dondorma, Holo cannot identify Sisi and prepares a provisional new-species report. Sara approves its submission and agrees to investigate her development as a Kinsect. Feeding tests fail to establish an absorption limit before exhausting the institute’s available supplies; Li Le identifies red power feed as her favorite 6 7.
Sisi develops miniature models while Li Le trains with the Insect Glaive. Together, they establish a silk-based method of collecting and delivering extracts. During the hunter examination, her size and inability to fly draw objections, but she passes both the weapon-support assessment and Sara’s demanding additional tests 9 10 11 13 14.
Val Habar and Larger Constructs
Concern over the spreading Frenzy Virus contributes to Li Le’s decision to travel with Sisi to Val Habar. Sara has no established treatment for infection in her species and has received no responses to requests for further Ahtal-Ka sightings. Meanwhile, a failed wooden Cephalos teaches Sisi that stronger materials are necessary for stronger movements 18 19.
After an encounter with the Seltas Queen destroys her miniature Ahtal-Neset, Sisi begins practicing directly with her sickle claws. Li Le encourages her not to abandon construction, explaining that larger, tougher machines can protect her body. Salvaged shipwreck materials subsequently allow Sisi and the Felynes to build a land-walking Seltas Queen Ahtal-Neset 26 27 28.
Sunken Hollow and Cathar Upgrades
In the Sunken Hollow, Sisi battles Nerscylla while Li Le and Kaluo pursue their Kecha Wacha target. Nerscylla’s pendulum attack tears open the machine’s upper shell; Sisi later tries to reproduce the technique, revealing weaknesses in her own wooden supports 29 30.
The team seeks stronger components in Cathar, where Gemma revises their connection designs. New metal leg assemblies enable climbing and upside-down travel, but another pendulum attempt snaps a ceiling pillar and damages the machine. Li Le subsequently treats the maneuver as a decisive technique that should be reserved for critical moments 32 33 34.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Rusted component collection — Small metal parts kept in a woven bag and brought from the desert ruins; Sisi gives one bolt to Li Le 3.
- Miniature models — Silk-bound recreations used to explore shipbuilding, monster anatomy, and movable joints 9 10 18.
- Seltas Queen Ahtal-Neset — A four-legged, crab-shelled construct with a crescent-shaped pincer tail, enclosed cockpit, observation openings, and silk controls 28.
- Reinforced climbing legs — Heavy metal components fitted with Kecha Wacha claws, installed with help from the Felynes 34.
- Power Nectar and power feed — Preferred foods used in her rearing; she also accepts speed and stamina feed 4 7.
Relationships
- Li Le — Human companion, handler, and teacher. He protects her place among humans, develops her Kinsect techniques, and encourages experimentation rather than suppressing her construction instincts 3 7 9 24 27.
- Kaluo — Felyne admirer and traveling companion. Helps refine her monster imitations, records insect behavior, and directs installation work on the Ahtal-Neset 9 10 24 34.
- Sara — Researcher and trainer responsible for her development plan and qualification standards. His difficult tests are intended to determine whether the juvenile can survive in the wild 7 13.
- Holo — Author and illustrator of her provisional species report. Measures her growth and repeatedly expresses concern about her gentle temperament in combat 7 9 10.
- Sophia — Guild receptionist who sketches and feeds Sisi, then demonstrates a sewing machine after noticing her interest 22.
- Bug Brother — Injured Seltas attracted by Sisi’s pheromones. Initially shows fear and deference toward her before joining the traveling party 24 26.
- Gemma — Revises Ahtal-Neset component designs and supplies the heavy leg parts used in its climbing upgrade 33 34.
Trivia
- Li Le initially objects to the cats giving Ahtal-Ka the cute nickname “Sisi,” but uses it himself by the day of the hunter examination 10.
- Her miniature craftsmanship attracts so much attention among Dondorma’s cats that the research institute receives a surge of feline job applicants 9.
- Customers buying from the institute later ask whether they can purchase a Kinsect like Sisi 32.
- During the weapon assessment, she deliberately touches the mechanical wyvern lightly because she does not want to damage it—not because she lacks striking power 13.
