Background / History

Joining Li Le

Kaluo worked breeding insects at the Kinsect Research Institute before joining Li Le’s travels. Fascinated by Ahtal-Ka’s model-making, he hid beneath the rain tarp of Li Le’s cargo cart rather than remain behind during an extract-gathering expedition. When discovered, he asked to stay and promised that his wilderness experience would make him useful 9.

He fulfilled that promise through diligent gathering and survival assistance. He also encouraged Ahtal-Ka’s experiments, offering advice as she used cart components to imitate monsters. Upon returning to Dondorma, Li Le told Sara that Kaluo had accompanied him as his Palico, ensuring his absence would not be treated as skipping work 9 10.

Kaluo subsequently helped Li Le prepare for the hunter examination, assisting with item combination, extract practice, and physical-test preparations 11 12 13.

Departure from Dondorma

Kaluo helped Sisi and the other Felynes build Old Bones, a skeletal mechanical monster assembled with insect silk. He stayed awake through the night working on it before the group’s departure for Val Habar 19.

Aboard the Sandworm, he served as lookout. His recognition of circling Remobra and an approaching sandstorm allowed him to sound the alarm for Dah’ren Mohran’s arrival. After reaching Val Habar, he helped assess the ship’s damage and directed Felynes during its expansion 19 20 21 22.

Seltas Queen Encounter

During the Ancestral Steppe expedition, Kaluo recorded the unusual behavior of the Seltas later named Bug Brother. When a Seltas Queen pursued the party, he helped wake Sisi, supplied combat items, and rode Old Bones into the confrontation beside her 24 25.

After Old Bones shattered, Kaluo remained with Sisi and supplied the silk line attached to a binder ballista arrowhead for her counterattack. He escaped with her onto the mountain road. Later, concerned by her distress over Old Bones’ destruction, he alerted Li Le and helped finish the expedition’s ecological report 26 27.

Ahtal-Neset Engineering and Cathar

Kaluo helped construct the land-walking Seltas Queen Ahtal-Neset and accompanied its endurance test and the subsequent Kecha Wacha hunt. He explored the underground caverns with Li Le, tracking the target through Nerscylla territory 28 29 30.

He enthusiastically joined the newly formed Ahtal-Neset Engineering Team and traveled to Cathar. There, he directed the installation of metal climbing-leg components and continued assisting with machinery and field tests 33 34.

Before the Sandworm’s sea voyage, Kaluo checked its insect-food reserves and assured Li Le that the engineering team would support his effort to protect Sisi from the coming calamity 37.

His excitement coexists with caution. He worries about unfamiliar monsters, warns Sisi against touching venom, and considers Li Le’s small hunting party dangerously understaffed. Nevertheless, when the Seltas Queen closes in, he chooses to fight beside Sisi despite recognizing the difference in their size 23 25 34.
