Background

A demon destroyed Kanae and Shinobu's peaceful family life. Gyomei Himejima saved the sisters, and the Kakushi subsequently placed them with relatives. Unable to forget the attack, they resolved to become Demon Slayers and protect other people's happiness 102 479 480.

Gyomei initially refused to help them enter the Corps, hoping they would live ordinary lives instead. The sisters persisted, staying at his home and handling cooking and cleaning. When Kanae was twelve and Shinobu six, he challenged them to move a 1.8-meter rock; they succeeded by using a lever 481.

Because Stone Breathing did not suit either sister, Gyomei introduced them to different cultivators. He considered Kanae's physical aptitude balanced, unlike Shinobu's marked lack of strength. Both sisters eventually completed their training and passed Final Selection 481.

Personality

Kanae is widely admired within the Corps for her gentleness and consideration. At the Butterfly Mansion, she personally prepares New Year dinners and organizes activities so recovering members can experience the warmth of a home. Kagaya describes her kindness as extending to everything without distinction 60 193 368.

Her compassion includes demons. She hopes to meet one capable of communicating normally with humans and becomes excited when she learns about Nezuko. She also regards Tamayo's restraint and years of treating patients as evidence of a gentle nature 82 212 316.

Her concern for others can become self-sacrificing. She stays behind to protect candidates from the Hand Demon even after her sword breaks, and later offers to hold off Doma so Teiichi can escape. Gyomei observes that she habitually considers the other person's perspective, even when hearing about his traumatic past 22 87 482.

Despite her loyalty to the Corps, Kanae fears losing her remaining family more than dying herself. After surviving Doma, she urges Shinobu to leave the Corps and live to old age. Teiichi's concealed injuries and later disappearance expose the same fear of another devastating loss 101 131 183 278.

She does not automatically accept Teiichi's decisions. She challenges his refusal to kneel before Kagaya over its effect on Corps unity and condemns his use of people as bait. Nevertheless, she gradually comes to understand the principles behind his conduct 67 103 131.

Kanae first appears rescuing another candidate with Flower Breathing. When her group encounters the Hand Demon, she buys time for her companions to flee. Her sword breaks against its defenses, but she refuses to abandon the others after the demon threatens to hunt them down. Teiichi defeats it, and the two exchange names while descending Mount Fujikasane 19 21 22 23.

Butterfly Mansion and Promotion

By the time Teiichi recuperates at the Butterfly Mansion, Kanae has become its head and the Flower Hashira. She combines medical study with missions and accompanies him to the meeting concerning his promotion to Wind Hashira 53 61 62.

Surviving Doma

After a mission in Mine City, Kanae encounters Doma and attempts to escape and stall until dawn. His ice mist severely damages her lungs, and Teiichi arrives as he prepares to finish her. She survives with lung frostbite and later sews Teiichi a white and blue-green haori in gratitude 82 84 86 87 98 101 105.

Romance with Teiichi

Their recovery-period conversations deepen their understanding of one another. Kanae comes to appreciate Teiichi's personal principles, though their ethical disagreements remain. After he leaves the Corps, they spend more time together, travel on a mission, and share a seaside date where he gives her a necklace and they kiss 103 131 137 143 144.

Their relationship becomes increasingly intimate, but Kanae insists that he stop hiding injuries from her. She later openly confirms to Mitsuri that they are dating 183 193 202.

Nezuko and Demon Research

Learning of a demon who does not eat people, Kanae visits Mount Sagiri with Teiichi and obtains Nezuko's blood. She later receives Nezuko's box at the Hashira meeting concerning the Kamado siblings. Her subsequent research identifies Nezuko's unusual resistance to wisteria 212 215 254 308.

Teiichi's Disappearance and Return

After Teiichi vanishes with Upper Ranks One, Two, and Three, Kanae searches the battlefield before breaking down over her necklace. She begins to accept his apparent death, only to spot him alive near the battlefield's edge. During his recovery, he promises to ask for her hand in marriage by the next year 278 282 286.

Kuroishi Village

Kanae investigates reports of child sacrifices with Teiichi and Nezuko. Discovering that villagers cooperated with a demon shakes her understanding of the people the Corps protects. She questions what their struggle has been for, while maintaining that she does not regret protecting ordinary people 402 409 419.

Infinity Castle

Kanae enters the Infinity Castle with Shinobu, conscious that she may never see Teiichi again. She joins Gyomei and Mitsuri against Muzan, then attempts to penetrate his defenses with the demon-to-human drug. Having deliberately deafened herself and accepted the possibility of death, she reaches close range under her allies' protection and activates Equinoctial Vermilion Eye 495 501 508.
