Appearance
- Hair: White-oak-colored, also described by a cult member as white 109 440.
- Eyes: Rainbow-colored irises bearing his Upper Rank designation. Initially, “Upper Rank” appears in his right eye and “Two” in his left; the numeral changes after his demotion 83 180.
- Build and bearing: Slender fingers and elegant, almost ritualistic gestures when introducing himself or handling his fans 84.
- Clothing: Wears bright red clothing during his battle with Akaza and a special leader’s hat when receiving cult followers 163 180.
Personality
Doma lacks ordinary emotional responses and consciously imitates them. When Kanae identifies his cheerful behavior as a clumsy performance, his smile disappears and he asks, without emotion, whether his acting was inadequate. He later explains that other things do not make him feel happiness, sadness, or anger, but insists that he genuinely wants to understand those experiences. This absence of emotion predates his transformation into a demon 86 230 453.
His curiosity about human feelings drives repeated attempts at romance. Despite having dated many women, he remains unable to understand their emotions. He describes killing and consuming women as bringing them “salvation” or allowing them to live forever within him; he explicitly tells Teiichi that he does not eat men 81 88 462.
Doma treats violence as an opportunity for conversation, experimentation, or games. He delays killing the wounded Tengen to discuss humanity and later forces him into a proposed choice involving the villagers’ lives. The Corps identifies his theatrical behavior and tendency to dawdle as weaknesses that can be exploited to buy time 453 455 456 463.
His early confidence rests on more than a century of encounters with Hashira, whom he regards as little more than stronger livestock. Although he claims he would accept death, he does not deliberately seek it: learning that Teiichi might be nearby nearly makes him abandon his mission, and he eventually begs Teiichi to spare him 83 444 472.
Background / History
Doma operates the Eternal Paradise Cult while living among humans. He receives believers in a dedicated audience room and presents himself as someone born to help suffering people find happiness. His temple also contains a collection of human heads, including one displayed in an exquisite vase 163 446 462.
Approximately fourteen or fifteen years before his encounter with Mitsuri, Doma sheltered Kotoha and her infant son, Inosuke Hashibira. Kotoha had fled after her abusive husband violently shook their crying baby. Doma killed her pursuing husband and mother-in-law because they were too noisy. After discovering Kotoha’s beauty, singing voice, and pure heart, he intended to keep her beside him without eating her or turning her into a demon 462.
Following the Upper Ranks’ disastrous battle with Teiichi, Muzan ordered Doma to discipline his followers and reduce their number to fewer than one hundred. Doma initially protested that this would remove more than half his membership, then immediately agreed under Muzan’s threatening gaze 284.
Abilities & Skills
Ice-Based Blood Demon Art
Doma controls ice, creating projectiles, restraints, autonomous figures, and enormous sculptures. His attacks combine direct injury with freezing effects that make prolonged combat especially dangerous for Breathing Style users 90 109 289.
| Technique | Applications and demonstrated effects |
|---|---|
| Scattering Lotus Petals | Releases a sustained barrage of tiny, blade-sharp ice petals. Destroying them scatters ice-crystal powder into the air 86 89. |
| Frozen Lotus | Creates lotus-shaped ice crystals and launches them at opponents 86 89 268. |
| Winter Icicles | Continuously forms and fires volleys of icicles, slowing an opponent’s approach while filling the battlefield with ice mist 91. |
| Barren Hanging Garden | Combines rapid fan movements with sweeping frost in close combat; used to intercept Nichirin strikes and wind blades 90 95 96 472. |
| Cold White Princesses | Summons two female-shaped ice sculptures that exhale freezing air containing sharp ice crystals. Primarily supportive, but capable of inflicting frost and wounds 94 454. |
| Ice vines | Attempts to bind an opponent with vines woven from ice crystals 90. |
Ice Mist and Lung Frostbite
- Shattered ice attacks release fine powder that can be inhaled, causing lung frostbite, coughing, and bleeding 86 91.
- Sustained exposure weakens Demon Slayers and interferes with the breathing needed to maintain their combat strength 109 454.
- Doma deliberately uses repeated icicle volleys and evasive movement to accumulate mist while avoiding unnecessary risks 91.
- Wind Breathing can disperse the mist, but this does not eliminate the danger posed by his other attacks 92 109.
- Wind is not an absolute defense against concentrated freezing air: Teiichi still suffers frost and cuts when passing directly through the Cold White Princesses’ breath 94.
Crystalline Divine Child
Doma creates miniature ice duplicates resembling himself, each carrying two ice fans 84.
- Number: Can produce up to five independent figures 109.
- Size: Approximately half a person’s height 84.
- Combat ability: Can wield some of Doma’s Blood Demon Arts, including weaker versions of Barren Hanging Garden 85 91.
- Threat level: Teiichi assesses them as comparable to, or stronger than, ordinary Lower Ranks 109.
- Vulnerability: They can be destroyed before formation finishes, although the opening is brief 95 109 268.
- Tactical use: Their ability to pursue other targets prevents defenders from simply withdrawing beyond the ice mist while leaving civilians exposed 470.
Rime — Water Lily Bodhisattva
Doma’s full-strength technique creates an enormous ice Bodhisattva beneath him. Its initial completed height is forty-two meters; later accounts describe it as roughly forty meters tall 92 109 275.
- Physical attacks: Its huge hands can tear apart tornadoes and repeatedly smash the battlefield 92 94.
- Speed: Its overall movement is slower than an Upper Rank’s, but its hand strikes are comparable in speed to Doma’s own attacks 93.
- Freezing breath: Exhales cold air and ice crystals across the ground to create a more favorable battlefield 93.
- Reconstruction: Doma rapidly rebuilds a severed hand by gathering cold air at the damaged wrist 94.
- Flexible anatomy: Its arms can swing backward through angles impossible for a human body 97 179.
- Surface attacks: Icicles can erupt from its crown to strike opponents standing on it 95.
- Evasion: Doma can sink into the sculpture, escaping a close-range strike while directing its arm toward his previous position 96.
- Limitations: Akaza destroys it during their Blood Battle, and Teiichi later confronts it with a wind blade wider than the sculpture itself 180 276.
Fan Combat and Battlefield Tactics
- Wields two golden folding fans to block Nichirin Blades and channel his Blood Demon Arts 89 95 109.
- Remains dangerous at close range, although sustained pressure can prevent him from freely using several ranged techniques 90 91.
- Targets a civilian to force Teiichi to interrupt his assault, creating enough distance to resume ranged attacks 90.
- Can divide his attention between personal combat and controlling the Bodhisattva, including attacking Kanae while fighting Teiichi 95 96.
- Lacks the Transparent World when Kokushibo and Akaza already possess it; he considers learning it after noticing the limits of his own perception 274.
Regeneration and Defensive Ice
- Regrows a severed arm almost immediately and survives losing substantial portions of his face and head 88 89 160 163.
- Regenerates his lower body after Teiichi cuts him in half at the waist 472.
- Encases himself in several meters of ice quickly enough to make Teiichi abandon an immediate attempt to kill him 281.
- Cannot withstand sunlight. His ice barriers allow him to cross a short sunlit stretch, but repeatedly melt and leave him severely burned 180.
- Sun damage dramatically slows his regeneration; Kokushibo cuts away the scorched flesh before Doma gradually recovers 180.
- Unlike Akaza, he is still regarded as killable by Teiichi during the Infinity Castle battle 281.
Human Disguise and Impersonation
- Lives in human society under a human disguise, which Kanae encounters before learning his identity 107.
- Poses as a Hashira in the Swordsmith Village, using Kotetsu’s trust to obtain an introduction to the visiting Demon Slayers 443 444 445.
- Maintains the deception despite knowing little about Corps ranks beyond the Hashira 443 444.
Equipment / Items
- Two golden folding fans — His principal weapons and the focus of many Blood Demon Art movements 95 109.
- Eternal Paradise Cult leader’s hat — Worn when receiving believers 163.
- Decorative pots and human-head displays — Requests pots from Gyokko to display women’s heads; a head mounted in a vase is later found in his temple 178 446.
Relationships
- Muzan Kibutsuji — Superior. Doma seeks his approval, obeys his orders, and ultimately relays the discovery that Nezuko has conquered sunlight 88 284 473.
- Akaza — Hostile colleague and eventual replacement as Upper Rank Two. Doma persistently acts familiar with him despite Akaza’s disgust and violent responses 160 163 180.
- Kokushibo — Higher-ranked colleague. Enforces respect for Doma’s former rank and later removes his sun-burned flesh to help him recover 163 180.
- Gyokko — Fellow Upper Rank and supplier of decorative pots for Doma’s gruesome displays 160 178.
- Kato Teiichi — Enemy whose strength overturns Doma’s initial contempt for Hashira. Doma later fears encountering him, begs for mercy, and is ultimately confirmed killed by him 88 444 472 475.
- Kanae Kocho — Intended victim who recognizes his lack of emotion. Teiichi’s intervention prevents Doma from killing her 86 96.
- Kotoha — Woman he sheltered with her infant son. He intended to keep her with him rather than consume or transform her 462.
- Inosuke Hashibira — Kotoha’s son, whom Doma remembers taking in as a baby 462.
- Kotetsu — Deceived guide who mistakes him for a Demon Slayer and leads him to the guesthouse 443 444 445.
- Tengen Uzui and Mitsuri Kanroji — Hashira who prevent him from reaching the evacuating Swordsmith Village 455 465 470.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mine City Encounter
Kanae encounters Doma in human disguise and follows him until he reveals his identity. After failing to escape, she attempts to stall him until dawn. His ice figures and lung-damaging mist overwhelm her, prompting Teiichi’s intervention 84 86 107.
Teiichi rejects Doma’s offer to become a demon and severs his arm with an opening attack. The ensuing battle exposes Doma’s mist tactics, autonomous ice figures, and Water Lily Bodhisattva. Teiichi ultimately gives up an opportunity to pursue Doma in order to evade the statue’s descending arm; with dawn approaching, he accepts Kanae’s survival as a successful outcome 88 91 92 96.
Rank Replacement Blood Battle
Akaza challenges Doma, destroys his Bodhisattva, and continues attacking until dawn. After kicking him into sunlight, Akaza prepares to expose him again, but Muzan intervenes. Doma survives and is demoted to Upper Rank Three 179 180.
Joint Assault on Teiichi
Doma joins Kokushibo and Akaza against Teiichi, with the other Upper Ranks supporting them. Teiichi reverses his ice projectiles, destroys his forming Divine Children, and targets his neck. During the later Infinity Castle fighting, Doma protects himself inside thick ice and survives the encounter 268 270 281.
Swordsmith Village and Death
Doma infiltrates the Swordsmith Village while posing as a Hashira. After discovering that Tengen and Mitsuri do not have their Nichirin Blades at hand, he attacks. Tengen delays him despite severe injuries, and Mitsuri subsequently holds him back atop the Bodhisattva while the village evacuates 444 448 455 465.
When Teiichi arrives, Doma retreats toward Infinity Castle portals. Teiichi repeatedly destroys the exits and cuts Doma in half before he can escape. With no new portal appearing, Doma stops fleeing and asks to be spared 471 472.
Teiichi keeps him alive long enough to witness Nezuko standing in sunlight and transmit that discovery to Muzan. His killing is not shown in the supplied account of the message delivery, but the subsequent Upper Rank meeting explicitly confirms that Teiichi killed him 473 475.
