Power Progression
Chen Qing’s growth depends heavily on the Divine Path, which lets him draw on his faction’s deities and believers. Temporary borrowed power and technical achievements are distinguished from permanent realm advancement below 398 838 950.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary scholar | 6 9 | Has no known bloodline inheritance or sorcerer legacy. His ability to see through A Li’s illusions nevertheless attracts suspicion. |
| Incarnation: approximately fifth-grade spiritual power | 83 | His incarnation accumulates power through the door god and mountain god. This assessment concerns the incarnation’s spiritual reserves, not a confirmed cultivation rank for his main body. |
| Peak second grade in both magic and martial cultivation | 151 | Reaches this level roughly half a year after beginning his plans during the Thousand-Faced Fox incident, drawing on Xu Hu, Old Wolf, and other subordinates. |
| Above-first-rank martial prowess | 273 | A palm strike reveals strength comparable to an above-first-rank warrior, surprising the Duke of Wei. |
| Combined lightning and Divine Wind power | 397 398 | Displays a major increase in speed, but his body cracks and bleeds under the strain. His available methods sustain him for only about a quarter of an hour against a yaksha. |
| Temporary transcendent combat power through Ao Zhen | 434 435 442 | Wields Ao Zhen’s attributes and Dragon King Breed strength without undergoing Dragon Transformation. His raw capabilities exceed his practical fighting skill. |
| Transcendent level recognized in battle | 485 487 | Wutu Gu identifies him as Transcendent after he erects a barrier while simultaneously defending himself. His close-combat performance also shows considerable improvement. |
| Near the limit permitted by the current rules | 836 837 838 | Matches the old Celestial Master in martial arts, spells, and elemental control. Achieves King-Level speed and effects through technique without freely wielding King-Level power. |
| Temporary King Level | 840 842 | Uses the Fortune-Stealing Technique to borrow the future power of Cui Yan’s gifted child. The breakthrough lasts only three breaths and leaves him dangerously vulnerable. |
| King Level accessible at will | 950 | Can break through at any time. The Ancient Demon Clan’s addition and Ziyue’s newly absorbed golem power further strengthen him; reaching King Level Peak still depends on greater spiritual energy becoming available. |
| Dao Fruit of the Sword mastery | 1119 1128 | Is reported to possess the Dao Fruit and later demonstrates its sword techniques directly. The Three-Eyed Divine General praises how quickly he has adapted to it. |
Background / History
Family and Early Life
Chen Qing grows up in a Longquan County family whose ancestors had farmed for at least five generations. His father earns the xiucai degree but dies when Chen Qing is five. Watching his mother grind tofu late into the night leads Chen Qing to abandon hopes of returning to his former life and commit himself to studying 6 550.
His elder brother and sister-in-law help support his education. After becoming a jinshi, he explicitly promises to repay their sacrifices and protect their family from further injustice. Master Yang also helps him recover family property and supports him through the provincial examination 5 109.
Cui Yan and the Thousand-Faced Fox
Chen Qing’s official career begins amid the disappearance of Cui Yan from other people’s memories. Questioning by Wang Ye reveals discrepancies concerning Cui Yan’s marriage and reputation; Chen Qing initially attempts to leave the capital and move his family to safety 1 2.
Wang Ye’s account of Noble Consort Liu and the Thousand-Faced Fox makes Chen Qing recognize the setting as a world he helped design. He eventually accepts that fleeing will not protect him and assists the investigation. His decision to target Master Huang also reflects a personal debt: Wang Ye had previously given him a chance to survive 2 6 17.
The possibility of becoming prefect of Liuzhou matters beyond promotion. Chen Qing’s chosen path requires official standing, and a higher office would accelerate his growth 22.
Establishing Jiangnan
As prefect of Liuzhou, Chen Qing builds a power base around the Divine Path, academies, formations, and military forces. His confrontation with the Shen Family develops into a struggle over Jiangnan’s future: continued obedience to the imperial court or an independent regional domain 53 71 180.
His institutions offer unusually broad opportunities for advancement. Mu Hongqing views both this structure and Chen Qing’s willingness to entrust Chen Ying with the Azure Dragon Inheritance as signs that he could become another King of Qin 250.
Chen Qing’s growing resources also make him a valuable ally. His abundant, unusually nourishing grain sustains the eldest princess’s West Sea campaigns, while his Dragon Palace formation supports harbor inspections and aerial transport 236 251.
The Death of Chen Ye
At a refuge stronghold, Chen Qing discovers that members of the Pan Household and his own clan are concealing his siblings’ fate. He kills Pan Qinghe and several fleeing men before learning that Zhaohui and Zhaohai have beaten Chen Ye to death and that Chen Yuan has been forced into marriage 96.
Finding Chen Yuan beside Chen Ye’s body breaks his composure. A terrifying power begins stirring within him, alarming Chen Yuan, Chen Ying, and the Mirror Demon 96.
Dragon Palace Expedition
Chen Qing brings rival factions into the ruined Dragon Palace while withholding his main objective: obtaining weapons or their manufacturing methods. He deliberately keeps those methods away from the strongest factions, choosing companions whose limited resources make them less immediate threats to Jiangnan 346 347.
His struggle with Ziyue includes deception, pursuit, an Anti-Magic Array, and the threat of the Heaven-Devouring Dragon Whale. Later battles expose the weaknesses of his borrowed strength: his body cannot sustain its full output, and raw attributes do not replace experience 357 397 398.
Against the corrupted Xiao Mingyue, he uses Ao Zhen’s power but finds himself outmaneuvered by decades of refined martial skill. He eventually turns to the sword instruction Xiao Mingyue herself had given him during their alliance 434 435 436.
The King of Qin and the Nature of the World
The King of Qin reveals that he has secretly resided within Chen Qing and originally intended to seize his compatible body. Although the two share an interest in strengthening humanity against ancient powers, Chen Qing distrusts the King of Qin’s manipulation and willingness to sacrifice him 439 440.
After confronting Jiang Xiaoling, Chen Qing learns that the world may be an artificial environment populated by data life-forms. The revelation leaves him unable to direct the southeastern campaign for a day and a night. Ao Zhen’s trust helps him recover his resolve to value the people around him regardless of their composition 538 550.
During data restructuring, the King of Qin succeeds in taking control of his body. Chen Qing later regains agency, but the possibility of another possession becomes a continuing reason to eliminate him 588 602.
Cloud Capital and the Four Saints
At Cloud Capital, Chen Qing protects Jiangnan’s students with a mobile spatial technique and fights the old Celestial Master directly. Their exchange reveals that his close combat, elemental manipulation, and spellcasting have developed far beyond his earlier dependence on borrowed attributes 836 837 838.
He temporarily reaches King Level through the Fortune-Stealing Technique, but its short duration and severe backlash leave his survival uncertain. Tian Heng searches for him while hostile factions move to exploit his weakness 840 842.
After returning, Chen Qing moves toward the Vermilion Bird Palace to rescue Tian Heng despite recognizing Bai Hua as a threat whose weaknesses he never designed. Subsequent fighting pits him against the King of Qin and Kagura; his use of Heavenly Origin ultimately forces Kagura to retreat 894 926 928 933.
Uncertain Origins
Ziyue challenges Chen Qing’s identification as Pu Yunchuan. She contrasts his remembered isolation at the studio with his present ability to hold together a faction of nobles, former enemies, talented outsiders, and fiercely loyal followers. She concludes that he carries Pu Yunchuan’s memories but is not necessarily Pu Yunchuan himself; Chen Qing admits that he lacks enough information to explain his origins 937.
Later accounts reveal an earlier conflict absent from much of his accessible memory. Chen Qing recalls attempting to make Elder Long’s faction and the Outer Heaven Demon Statue weaken each other, only for Elder Long to win over the Four Spirits. The Three-Eyed Divine General remembers Chen Qing wielding the Yin-Yang Dao Fruit against thirty-six Buddhas, seventy-two heavenly generals, and one hundred and eight asuras before ultimately being defeated 1120 1121.
Renewed War with the Heavenly Court
Chen Qing returns alone toward Jiangnan after learning of the Shen Family’s disloyalty. Zhou Haitao meanwhile guards a concealed contingency that Chen Qing prepared specifically against betrayal within his own ranks 1018.
Although forbidden techniques damage his and Ziyue’s origins, Chen Qing continues intervening personally for his followers. He locates and rescues Shen Yuan, argues that natives and Data City residents have equal claims to survival, and vows not to repeat his earlier failure to protect those around him 1053 1119.
His later campaign uses temporarily strengthened Four Saints troops despite the risk of their armor and bodies failing. In direct combat, his adaptation to the Dao Fruit of the Sword earns the Three-Eyed Divine General’s recognition 1127 1128.
Appearance
- Early appearance: A young, frail-looking scholar whose soft skin leads his sister-in-law to compare him to a pampered wealthy gentleman 1 5 18.
- Facial features: Considered reasonably attractive, but his rugged brows, eyes, and facial bones make him look unmistakably masculine even when disguised with makeup 636.
- Combat manifestation: Can form dragon-scale armor and a trident from wind while wielding Ao Zhen’s power; these are combat effects rather than permanent physical features 434 436.
Personality
Chen Qing begins as a cautious survivor rather than a fearless hero. His first response to Cui Yan’s disappearance is to escape, and the King of Qin later characterizes him as tactful, principled within limits, and strongly concerned with self-preservation. Even so, he refuses to disregard a debt of life to Wang Ye 2 17 926.
His investment in Jiangnan comes from responsibility rather than simply choosing the quickest route to strength. He believes that, as a designer, he helped create the world’s horrors and therefore ought to change them. He chooses the Divine Path because he considers it the path most capable of freeing the world from those horrors, not because it is unequivocally the strongest option 488 550.
He is calculating in recruitment and negotiation. His early oath with Chen Ying partly reflects an interest in her connection to Mu Hongqing, and he openly evaluates Dragon Palace companions by their resources and potential danger. Nevertheless, he gives followers valuable inheritances, delegates authority, and personally risks himself for former enemies who have joined him 84 250 347 1118 1119.
Leadership also forces him to confront his own contradictions. After nearly fifty thousand Fighter Army soldiers die around North Sea City, he realizes that he has become one of the powerful individuals whose decisions determine the lives of thousands—a kind of authority he once despised 621.
His confidence grows alongside his faction. By the time King Level becomes readily accessible, the King of Qin believes that Chen Qing’s earlier caution is giving way to overconfidence 950.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Path Style
The foundation of Chen Qing’s faction and personal growth allows him to wield the power and abilities of deities and believers under his authority 398 950.
- Shared power: His available strength grows with followers such as Xu Hu and Ao Zhen 151 435.
- Divine institutions: Establishes roles such as door gods, mountain gods, battle gods, and sea gods 83 198.
- Merit-based development: Explains that divine power can grow through demon suppression, protected shipping, flood control, rainfall, and answering prayers 198.
- Locating believers: Can find a person who believes in him through a divine art, enabling his rescue of Shen Yuan 1119.
- Limitations: Borrowed power can exceed his body’s tolerance and does not automatically supply practical experience 397 398 435.
World-System Knowledge and Deduction
Chen Qing remembers designing the world’s technique system with a partner and tuning its data for months 61.
- Identifies the Thousand-Faced Fox story and recognizes artifacts from an unreleased fourth version 2 702.
- Uses remembered game interactions, including white jade’s ability to absorb corrupting light, to counter opponents 459.
- Infers hidden identities and faction weaknesses from behavior, access to resources, and discrepancies in established rules 321 347 451.
- His knowledge is incomplete: Bai Hua’s lack of designed weaknesses and the Warlock Dynasty’s possession of unreleased artifacts both unsettle his expectations 702 894.
Formations and Spatial Techniques
Chen Qing combines fixed defenses, rapidly drawn formations, and unusually precise spatial manipulation 251 536 836.
- Dragon Palace formation: Enables harbor openings, cargo inspection, and aerial movement; its hurried construction initially leaves serious flaws 251.
- Anti-Magic Array: Briefly suppresses Ziyue’s spells after he catches her hands 357.
- Void Formation Drawing: Deploys powerful formations without conventional preparation, demonstrating battlefield-scale force at White Cloud City 536.
- Divine Sleeve effect: Enlarges and compresses space to shrink the Jiangnan students and conceal them in his sleeve 836.
- Spatial destruction: Breaks apart a space measuring a thousand zhang square in two breaths through exceptional elemental control 838.
Space-Time Reversal
Chen Qing can reverse otherwise fatal outcomes, though the method carries costs and conditions 81 195 412.
- Restores Chen Ying after an apparently lethal attack and later restores Ao Zhen after her head is destroyed 81 412.
- Reversing Shen Laoqi’s condition leaves him weakened and removes roughly a third of his spiritual power 195.
- Shen Laoqi estimates that repeated use increases the risk and that Chen Qing may be limited to three uses; this is his deduction, not a confirmed universal limit 195.
Wind, Lightning, and Swordsmanship
Chen Qing’s combat develops from borrowed power with limited technique into a seamless combination of martial arts and spellcasting 435 836 837.
- Summons heavenly lightning during his duel with Lu Ming and combines lightning with the Divine Wind Spell for greater speed 275 397.
- Forms wind into blades, a trident, and a short sword 357 434 436.
- Learns three sword moves from Xiao Mingyue, initially mastering only one 436.
- Uses Ao Zhen’s secret technique to create sword qi capable of shattering the void 495 496.
- Later defeats Ao Zhen in a spar lasting only ten breaths 839.
- Adapts rapidly to the Dao Fruit of the Sword and its extensive sword techniques 1128.
Fortune-Stealing Technique
This Divine Path technique borrows a follower’s future potential to produce a temporary breakthrough 840.
- Uses the extraordinary talent of Cui Yan’s child, who possesses half the Central Plains royal family’s fortune 840.
- Grants Chen Qing King-Level power for only three breaths during the Cloud Capital battle 840.
- Damages the body and risks unconsciousness because the available spiritual energy cannot sustain King-Level life 840 842.
Forbidden Techniques
Chen Qing employs prohibited powers capable of overturning unfavorable battles, but their consequences remain severe 926 928 1053.
- Heavenly Demon Wheel: Drives it to maximum output against the King of Qin despite potentially catastrophic side effects 926.
- Heavenly Origin: One of the eight great forbidden techniques; belongs to the matter category and embodies extreme, unyielding yang 928.
- Combat application: Heavenly Origin blocks Kagura’s Asura Seal and destroys her hand, prompting her withdrawal 933.
- Cost: Forbidden techniques damage both his and Ziyue’s origins, leaving them dependent on a superpower’s activation for recovery 1053.
