God of Supreme Yin
"If you're willing, I certainly have no problem with it."
Xiao Wu did not hesitate in the slightest and answered immediately.
Su Mu was a man of action. Seeing that Xiao Wu had agreed, he hurriedly prepared the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone so she could begin transcribing his words.
Unfortunately, the words she wrote contained Righteous Qi. Otherwise, Su Mu could have taken this opportunity to learn a few more characters.
"What do you usually spend the silver you earn on?"
Su Mu was rather bored beside her. He could not watch her transcribe and could only hear the faint swishing, so he struck up a conversation.
"What do I usually buy?" At this, Xiao Wu looked conflicted. "Usually spirit rice, or I exchange it for some Spirit Stones, then save up to buy Spirit Artifacts and things."
As Xiao Wu counted them off, she looked increasingly troubled. "There are simply too many things a cultivator needs to buy. Without some extra income, you're really terribly poor."
"Spirit rice?"
Su Mu was taken aback to hear of it.
"Yes. The best things for cultivators to eat are things containing spiritual power, like spirit rice. Eating too much worldly food will inevitably taint your spiritual power."
Su Mu perked up. "What does this spirit rice look like? Could you show me?"
"Sure. Wait a moment."
Xiao Wu finished writing the piece in one go. After glancing at the Righteous Qi emerging from it, she smiled. In her eyes, this was gleaming silver!
Xiao Wu put the calligraphy away, then left briefly before returning to Su Mu's courtyard with a small sack made of coarse cloth.
"Here, this is spirit rice."
Su Mu opened the sack and looked inside. It was a kind of rice, but it looked somewhat different. Every grain exuded faint traces of spiritual charm and was exceptionally plump, looking quite enticing.
The sight made Su Mu crave it. He wondered how this spirit rice tasted.
"Stop staring. You're a soul body; you can't eat anything."
Seeing Su Mu's expression, Xiao Wu immediately understood what he was thinking. She shook her head and said as much.
Su Mu froze, then immediately looked conflicted.
Before, he had not thought much of being a soul body. Even with so many things countering him, he had not found it too upsetting.
But now, he was genuinely miserable.
This was a world of immortal cultivation, and he had yet to taste any of its food. Wasn't this far too agonizing?
And this spirit rice looked like it would taste very good.
Su Mu smacked his lips, looked down at his somewhat illusory body, and sighed helplessly.
"Do the common people of Great Liang eat this kind of spirit rice too?"
"How could they!" Xiao Wu, who had resumed transcribing, pursed her lips at his question. "This is spirit rice! One dou costs a tael of silver! How could commoners afford it?"
Su Mu was somewhat at a loss. He had little idea how much a tael of silver was actually worth.
Still, judging by what she said, it must have been very expensive.
"But some ordinary families do grit their teeth and buy quite a bit of spirit rice for their children. Eating spirit rice from childhood makes it easier to awaken a spirit root, allowing them to begin cultivating."
Xiao Wu spoke softly about these everyday worldly matters while Su Mu listened attentively beside her, absorbing the information.
It would help him understand this world a little better.
Over the course of an afternoon chatting with Xiao Wu, Su Mu gradually learned quite a bit more about this world.
They produced ten pieces of calligraphy in all.
"I'll leave selling these to you. But before that, how much do you think your share of the profits should be?"
Su Mu looked at the finished calligraphy and rubbed his hands together.
Although Xiao Wu had previously said that obtaining a body would be difficult, surely having enough money would make it easier?
Since his remnant soul had already arrived here, Su Mu still wanted to obtain a body here.
Xiao Wu tilted her head to look at Su Mu, seemingly also considering how much would be appropriate.
"How about an eighty-twenty split? Eighty for me, twenty for you."
Su Mu thought for a moment and made the suggestion.
He felt that twenty percent was quite a lot. If one piece of calligraphy sold for a tael of gold, she could earn a whole tael of gold from five pieces.
"Isn't eighty-twenty too much?"
Xiao Wu had indeed been hesitating over how much would be appropriate, but when Su Mu directly offered her twenty percent, she was immediately startled.
She had done nothing, yet she was already getting a tael of gold today?
Seeing that Xiao Wu seemed to think twenty percent was too much, Su Mu immediately felt relieved.
Su Mu certainly did not think twenty percent was too much. When he went out in the future, he would need Xiao Wu to accompany him.
With this financial connection, it was as good as having an extra bodyguard, greatly improving his safety.
"Twenty percent it is, then. I'll leave figuring out how to sell them to you."
Su Mu made the final decision.
Seeing Su Mu's firm expression, Xiao Wu hesitated briefly before she stopped agonizing over it. No one would really object to getting more money.
The sky gradually darkened, and the moon began to rise slowly.
Looking at the crescent moon spilling silvery-gray light, Su Mu recalled the figure he seemed to have seen on the moon on his first day here.
He asked casually, "There wouldn't happen to be a Chang'e living on that bright moon, would there?"
"Hmm?"
Xiao Wu looked somewhat puzzled. "What Chang'e? Isn't it the God of Supreme Yin who lives on the moon?"
"Huh?"
Su Mu's expression grew still. "The God of Supreme Yin?"
"Yes." Xiao Wu nodded earnestly. "The God of Supreme Yin has many titles, such as the Moon God and the Moon Maiden. Rumor has it that the Moon Maiden is an extraordinarily beautiful woman, but no one has ever seen her."
"That's why the Mid-Autumn Festival is so lively every year. That's when the bright moon is closest to the mortal world, and the scholars of the Academy of Righteousness all write calligraphy in the hope of catching the Moon God's attention."
There was such a thing?
Hearing this filled Su Mu with yearning. He truly had no idea just how lively the Mid-Autumn Festival would be.
It was rather different from the Mid-Autumn Festival on Earth.
"Well, it's getting late. This servant will take her leave."
Xiao Wu looked at the sky. It was already getting late, so she hurriedly gathered her things and prepared to leave.
Seeing this, Su Mu told her to take the calligraphy as well. He would leave the matter of selling it to her.
Xiao Wu silently put the calligraphy away as well.
Su Mu stood in the courtyard, gazing up at the bright moon in the night sky. Compared with daytime, he really did prefer the night.
It was as though his body, constantly scorched by the power of Lesser Yang during the day, could now slowly recover under the power of Heavenly Yin.
