Background / History
Accidental Summoning
Before entering the cultivation world, Su Mu was an ordinary university graduate working on Earth. He was drafting a proposal at his computer when Great Liang’s sacrificial ritual, sabotaged by fiends, summoned his incomplete soul into the imperial palace. Officials considered him useless and dangerously weak, but the Eldest Princess ordered that he be kept alive 1 2 6.
Returning to Earth revealed that the incident was real: he could barely control his original body. Fearing that the destruction of his separated soul might kill him, he arranged for his savings of thirty-odd thousand yuan to reach his parents if anything happened 2 3.
Establishing Himself in Great Liang
Su Mu secured the Eldest Princess’s gratitude by reciting a prayer during her Heavenly Tribulation. She credited him with her success and rewarded him with Soul Jade, cultivation resources, a cultivation method, and permission to enter and leave the palace 13 15 16.
He then pursued cultivation on Earth while developing a calligraphy business in Great Liang. Xiao Wu helped produce copies of his prayer, and his literary reputation attracted scholars, Daoists, and officials seeking treasured calligraphy. He directed sales through the Eldest Princess to escape their persistent requests 18 20 43.
His reputation also spread among demons. He attended the Demon King’s birthday gathering, and lesser demons later accompanied him in hopes of hearing further guidance 45 50 55.
Fleshly Body and Religious Influence
The Eldest Princess eventually shaped a fleshly body for Su Mu, freeing him from the restrictions of a soul form. He agreed to help Great Liang handle hostile vassal-state envoys through calligraphy or strategy in exchange for payment 120.
His knowledge of Earth’s religious texts became a major source of influence. The Diamond Prajnaparamita Sutra helped monks reinforce a seal against fiends, while his words from the Tao Te Ching resolved Di Xingchun’s demonic obstruction. These events also developed the lotuses within his consciousness 139 198.
Haotian Realm and Alternate Identities
Facing danger connected to the Haotian Realm, Su Mu warned Zhou Jianhua that Earth could become a target. He promised to gather resources for Earth and support its expansion into the universe rather than immediately open cultivation to everyone 205.
He adopted multiple identities, including Han Feiyu, the demonic path’s Holy Son, and Young Master Hundred Flowers. After the Land of the Five Elements expedition, Han Feiyu carried a one-million-Spirit-Stone bounty, while Su Mu’s true identity carried a hundred-million bounty. The latter later rose to 150 million 225 271.
He also cooperated with displaced Youtian Realm cultivators seeking a route home. Ye Weixiao became a recurring ally in expeditions, escapes, and efforts to recover his Fallen Star Sword 297 312 369 410.
Earth’s Development and the West Sea Conflict
Su Mu supported Huaxia with cultivation-world resources, formations, and treasures. His activities included teleportation infrastructure associated with lunar bases and an Invisibility Formation concealing a developed Floating Island 164 392 423 424.
After killing Niyu, he became a target of the West Sea, whose representative demanded his head and an annual sacrifice of a million people from Great Liang. When the Eldest Princess refused, Su Mu returned to Earth and requested roughly a hundred “mushroom bombs” through Zhou Jianhua to prepare for war 330.
Ten-Year Seclusion
Su Mu was later trapped among spatial rifts. Ye Weixiao attempted to rescue him, but a Law Treasure she sent toward the rifts was swallowed. His enemies ultimately abandoned their effort to kill him because stabilizing the area would be too costly and would still leave them facing him afterward 454 457.
He spent ten years studying the Dao Scripture and formed a third Dao Lotus. Upon returning to Earth, he reunited with his parents, explained his cultivation and otherworldly experiences, and gave both life-extending pills. He subsequently reunited with Wang Peng, Leizi, and Monkey, who had searched for him for years 457 458 459.
Appearance
- Original appearance: Initially has an ordinary face, with cultivation gradually making him more attractive 25.
- Soul form: Translucent and insubstantial, with feet resembling those of a ghost 1.
- Constructed body: Closely resembles his Earth body but is considerably fairer and appears nearly flawless 120.
- Cultivator’s bearing: Develops clear, bright eyes and an ethereal air; later appears in Daoist robes with his long hair bound up 69 319.
- Clothing and disguises: Uses scholar’s robes, a square cap, and Daoist attire to support different identities 204 214 434.
Personality
Su Mu is cautious, pragmatic, and strongly motivated by survival. He withholds information during his first conversation with the Eldest Princess, prefers familiar escorts when entering unknown places, and checks meeting locations for formations before approaching. Even after becoming powerful, he watches for ambushes rather than becoming absorbed in battlefield victories 4 32 297 349.
He values money and negotiates payment openly, but he is not indiscriminately selfish. He repays Xiao Wu’s expenses, avoids exhausting Spiritual Power needed by weaker cultivators, and believes he should help others when doing so lies within his abilities 17 27 28 29 120.
His family remains a priority. He brews medicine for his parents, buys them a car and a home, and sets cultivation aside during family gatherings. His enjoyment of food is equally persistent: being unable to taste cultivation-world dishes is one of his chief frustrations as a soul body 19 35 38 164 365.
Abilities & Skills
Travel Between Worlds
Su Mu can shift his awareness between Earth and his otherworldly body by following a thread he senses in the Unseen 18.
- Time initially passes at the same rate in both worlds 6.
- Memories and learned cultivation methods remain accessible after crossing 18.
- His early attempts to carry physical objects back to Earth fail; later, he transports treasures and resources 15 392.
- His original Earth body continues to require attention while he is elsewhere, although cultivation eventually allows it to survive without food 11 297.
Dao Lotuses
The Dao Lotus absorbs and refines Spiritual Power and develops through comprehension of Dao Scriptures and acts that generate merit 151 186 198 225.
- Powerful attacks: Azure light overturns a nether creature that Spirit Transformation cultivators had failed to stop 312.
- Suppression: Uses the Azure Lotus to suppress Niyu before killing him 330.
- Purification: Its light removes fire poison from his Divine Sense 266.
- Weapon nurturing: Multiple lotuses accelerate the strengthening of the Fallen Star Sword 422.
- Recovery requirement: A stripped Dao Lotus cannot simply be restored without merit 225.
- Potential law alteration: A demoness states that two Dao Lotuses could alter local laws and release her clan from its forbidden land; Su Mu agrees to return once his second lotus blooms 445.
Buddhist Fortune and the Buddha-Slaying Art
Su Mu uses the Buddha Lotus and Buddhist fortune to cultivate the Buddha-Slaying Art, gaining rapid increases in cultivation 213 221 246.
- Consumes Golden Lotus petals to initiate and sustain cultivation 213 297 401.
- Manifests enormous Buddha palms capable of killing an Early Core Formation opponent with a few strikes 221.
- Is not inherently restrained by utmost-yang attacks: Solar Essence Fire fails to counter his Buddha palm 221.
- Requires substantial Spiritual Power; one early fight consumes two-tenths of his reserves 221.
- Includes the Life-Claiming Brahma Sound, whose cultivation requires Core Formation 214.
Ten Thousand Fires Art
His original body cultivates a method based on absorbing spirit flames 271 293.
- Must be started at Foundation Establishment to reach great accomplishment 271.
- Allows rapid advancement when sufficient spirit flames are available 293 299.
- Gives him enough fire-controlling power at Mid Foundation Establishment to threaten some ordinary Core Formation cultivators 296.
- Refines bodily impurities, eventually producing a physique considered first-rate even by cultivation-world standards 424.
- Is difficult for ordinary practitioners because Foundation Establishment bodies struggle to endure spirit flames, which are themselves hard to obtain 271.
Swordsmanship and Movement
- Azure Spirit Slash: An offensive flying-sword technique described as powerful enough to kill opponents at his own cultivation level 172.
- Azure Spirit Flash: A second sword technique oriented toward preserving his life 172.
- Sword flight: Directs a flying sword through Divine Sense, though early use drains his Spiritual Power quickly 151.
- Water Escape: Uses it to evade Shi Hu during the underwater spider encounter 176.
- Concealment: Can turn invisible before flying away 423.
Calligraphy, Scripture, and Strategy
Su Mu turns knowledge from Earth into valuable cultivation-world resources 13 139 198.
- Produces treasured calligraphy sought by scholars, officials, and sects 43 247.
- Provides prayers associated with successful tribulation transcendence 15 16.
- Uses religious texts to support seals and guide other cultivators 139 198.

Formations and Disguise
- Studies and sets up teleportation formations, carefully memorizing their construction 85 96.
- Completes the Floating Island’s Invisibility Formation and teaches its commander how to operate and maintain it 424.
- Uses a treasured pearl to change his appearance and presence, imitating Dao, devil, or Confucian cultivation identities 204 214.
