Setting and Layout

  • Mountain scenery: The lofty peak rises above a sea of clouds, with pavilions and towers built on cliffs and stone terraces 169.
  • Sunrises: Sunrise can be viewed throughout the mountain, with scenery that changes across the four seasons. Its elevation also means sunset remains visible after darkness has fallen below 175.
  • Great hall: Qingyun receives Fang Zelin here; the hall later serves as a meeting place for the assembled sect leaders 169 428.
  • Scripture library: Houses cultivation records and the insights of earlier disciples, including those killed while fighting demons 172 173.
  • Training grounds: A stone platform faces the rock wall bearing Fang Zelin’s Scripture of Salvation 172 173.
  • Other facilities: Meditation chambers, a side hall used by Fang Zelin to study Law Techniques, and a dining hall are documented 172 173 175.
  • Later expansion: Additional buildings accommodate the growing disciple population. Even these become insufficient when cultivators from many sects assemble there 381 429.

History

Decline through successive calamities

During Great Zhou, Jade Void Mountain had thousands of disciples. Repeated campaigns against demons, especially the calamity of that dynasty, caused severe losses. By the late Great Jin period, fewer than a hundred remained 171 188 192.

Recruitment was difficult, and entering Seeking Dao Mountain presented another obstacle to replenishing the sect. Although demon-slaying expeditions had once consisted almost entirely of formal disciples who had entered Seeking Dao Mountain, dwindling numbers eventually forced less advanced disciples to participate 171.

The mountain preserved accounts of its fallen disciples as history every disciple was expected to learn, ensuring their sacrifices were remembered across generations 172.

Fang Zelin’s search and arrival

After Fang Zelin helped Qingyun suppress an inner demon, Qingyun returned home without explaining how to find Jade Void Mountain. Fang Zelin subsequently asked Zhang Weichu and the Beiqu City God, but neither knew its location; a map likewise offered no answer 85 89 91 108.

He finally reached the mountain after rescuing Xuan Yi, Yang Xiang, and several civilians from demons. The two cultivators brought him home, where Qingyun welcomed him as a long-awaited senior guest 169.

The Scripture of Salvation

Moved by a glimpse of the mountain’s past, Fang Zelin wrote the Scripture of Salvation on the training ground’s rock wall. Characters from the disciples’ recorded insights flew out of the library and entered the wall, while supernatural recitation resounded across the mountain 173.

The scripture guided the gathered disciples into Seeking Dao Mountain; Zhenke also entered after Yunyi requested permission for her to contemplate it. The disciples and their elders regarded the inscription as an opportunity to reverse the sect’s decline 173 174.

With nearly a hundred disciples now having successfully sought the Dao, Qingyun asked Fang Zelin to help lead them into the troubled world. Four groups followed separate demon-slaying routes, intending to reunite in Hang River Circuit 175. These expeditions remained dangerous: Xuanyu died holding off a powerful zombie so his junior brothers could escape 188.

Qingyun later opened access to the scripture to disciples of other lineages. Daoist Qianji subsequently confirmed that cultivators from many sects had studied it and entered Seeking Dao Mountain 206 217.

Recovery and renewed losses

Over the following decades, Jade Void Mountain recovered much of its strength. Yang Xiang credited Fang Zelin’s scriptures with the progress of newly recruited disciples, while Fang supplied disciples with lightning-enhanced flying swords sealed inside gourds 344 345 346.

After centuries of peace under Great Qian, the mountain housed several thousand disciples. Qin Xuzi associated this growth with the greater availability of recruits of good character during the long peace 381 383.

The intervening years also took Fang Zelin’s old acquaintances. On returning, he learned that Qingyun had died fighting Devil Cultivators in Northern Liang, Qingcheng had died two hundred years earlier, and the entire Yang generation had passed away 381.

During renewed demon attacks, senior disciples used Fang Zelin’s gourds to protect their companions, but casualties included Shi Yun, Wang Qian, and Wang Yin. Qin Xuzi ordered continued patrols throughout Great Qian and along its rivers, particularly because the Aquatic Race had not yet appeared 409.

Gathering and unification of the immortal sects

Yunzi summoned cultivators from numerous sects to Jade Void Mountain, asking them to bring their treasure-vault holdings. The resulting gathering filled the grounds beyond their usual capacity 427 428 429.

The assembled cultivators spent more than thirty years preparing a collaborative Law Treasure project. Their work included gathering missing materials, testing their properties, calculating compatible formations, and determining a safe refinement sequence 431 432.

Fang Zelin eventually completed the Five Directions Flags, whose appearance brought a substantial increase in Immortal Sect Karmic Fortune 434. He then used them to sever Jade Void Mountain halfway up its slopes and raise it, together with surrounding peaks, into the clouds 435.

The sect leaders agreed to consolidate their communities under the flags’ protection. Disciples transported additional mountains using the Move Mountains Technique, and the participating sects agreed to identify themselves by their cultivation peaks rather than retain separate sect names 435 437.

Hidden stronghold against the Devil Race

Devil Race scouts searched the mountain’s former location using tracking spells, supernatural sight, and other Divine Abilities. None detected the sanctuary, although it remained above the clouds nearby. Unwilling to risk exposing their presence through a broad attack, they dispersed to search Great Shang instead 442 443.

Jade Void Mountain later became the site where captured Devil Race mighty figures were suppressed and refined through Law Treasures. The process stripped away their cultivation and returned stolen Immortal Sect Karmic Fortune to the immortal sects 449.

Recorded disciple population

Period Population Circumstances
Great Zhou Thousands Remembered by Demon King Wu as a much stronger generation 192.
Late Great Jin Fewer than 100 Repeated battle losses and difficulties replenishing the lineage 171.
Decades after Fang Zelin’s first visit Over 200, with another 38 undergoing mortal-world training Renewed growth attributed to Fang Zelin’s scriptures 346.
Later Great Qian Several thousand Expanded buildings and a much larger cultivation community 381 383.

Cultivation and Traditions

Recruitment and discipline

  • Divination: The sect uses divination to seek prospective disciples with an affinity for the immortal path, though affinity alone does not guarantee admission 414.
  • Character training: Yang Xiang completes thirty years of trials before Qingyun declares his cultivation of the heart complete and authorizes instruction in the arts 169.
  • Senior authority: The tenth sect rule requires disciples to obey their senior brother; Xuanyu invokes it when ordering his juniors to escape 188.
  • Memorial instruction: Disciples learn the history of earlier demon-slaying battles and the seniors who died in them 172.

Teachings and techniques

  • Scripture of Salvation: The rock-wall inscription helps cultivators enter Seeking Dao Mountain and is made available to other lineages 173 206 217.
  • Treasured Law Techniques: The mountain possesses three closely valued Law Techniques, including Turning Stone into Gold. Fang Zelin studies them for nearly half a month but grasps only their surface 172 175.
  • Grain Avoidance: Available to all disciples, though few practice it 175.
  • Movement arts: Disciples use clouds and mist, immortal cranes, and later flying swords. Those who have not entered the Dao cannot independently ride clouds or summon the cranes 172 343.
  • Daily practice: Visiting Rising Tide Valley disciples witness morning sword practice accompanied by recitation of the Scripture of Salvation 358.

Dress and duties

  • Uniform: Long blue-green outer robes over white inner garments, with “Jade Void” embroidered on the white right lapel 172.
  • Demon-slaying: Disciples descend during periods of dynastic turmoil to protect commoners and prevent demons from stealing Human Race Karmic Fortune 175.
  • Relief work: Their duties include dispelling plague with talismans as well as fighting demons 178.
  • Treatment of spirits: The disciples leave Fang Zelin’s white deer unharmed after recognizing its auspicious Qi and lack of malice 400.

Defenses and Treasures

Five Directions Flags

  • Mountain protection: Conceal Jade Void Mountain and its associated peaks while serving as the sanctuary’s protective formation 435.
  • Resistance to detection: Defeat both object-based tracking and supernatural sight used by Devil Race scouts 442 443.
  • Stated defensive strength: Fang Zelin explains that even unusually gifted beings who see through the concealment would still be unable to break the formation 435.
  • Shared protection: Allow relocated sects to shelter together while freeing other Law Treasures for defensive operations 435 437.
  • Karmic benefit: Their completion increases Immortal Sect Karmic Fortune, improving the disciples’ lifespans and access to Spiritual Qi 434.

Flying Swords and Demon-Slaying Gourds

  • Flying swords: Associated with Fang Zelin’s assistance and renowned among visiting cultivators for the disciples’ Sword Riding Technique 344 347.
  • Lightning enhancement: Fang Zelin tests swords inside lightning-filled gourds; the resulting attacks flash blue-white and leave the testing ground cratered 344 345.
  • Sealed cultivation: Disciples contemplate sword intent and maintain a mental connection with swords stored inside the gourds 347.
  • Activation command: “Treasure, please turn around” releases their demon-slaying attack 409.
  • Limited distribution: Later recruits do not all possess these older treasures; senior disciples explain that Fang Zelin specially refined them for an earlier generation 409.
  • Later use: Disciples eventually demonstrate flying swords that return to their gourds after travel 428.

Other Equipment and Projects

  • Yao-Beating Whips: Carried on demon-slaying expeditions; produce golden attacks and defensive shields 175 177.
  • Sea-Calming Divine Pearl: Selected as the next collaborative Law Treasure after the Five Directions Flags, intended to suppress the Aquatic Race and command the seas 435.
  • Prisoner-refining Law Treasures: Used at the mountain to suppress captured Devil Race mighty figures and recover stolen karmic fortune 449.
