Power Progression
Yunzi’s cultivation increases substantially, but the supplied chapters do not assign her a named realm or numerical level.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established sect-master cultivation | 299 300 | Estimates that she can probably face two great demons. During the ensuing assault, she withstands their counterattack while Fang Zelin fights five. |
| Considerable cultivation growth | 383 | After their long separation, Fang Zelin recognizes that her cultivation has improved considerably, noting how quickly she detects his arrival. |
| Temporary formation-assisted enhancement | 397 | Draws the disciples’ starlight around herself through the Heavenly Secrets Grand Formation, causing her presence to surge. The enhancement cannot withstand the Devil Race great cultivator’s palm. |
| Severe foundation and vital-Qi damage | 399 | The attack leaves her foundation failing, her lifespan threatened, and a lock of hair turning white. Spiritual Power introduced into her body dissipates before reaching her internal organs. |
| Recovery and further advancement | 404 407 | Recovers through the Heaven-Mending Pill. Its medicinal effects, years of cultivation, and insights gained while watching Fang Zelin cultivate substantially increase her attainment; even faint traces of her Law Power oppress his attendant demons. |
Background
Before becoming an immortal cultivator, Yunzi traveled and trained in the mortal world during a dynasty preceding Northern Liang. She witnessed rulers treating ordinary people like livestock and came to believe that such regimes might deserve destruction. These experiences later shaped her response to Fang Zelin’s explanation of dynastic exploitation and decline 267.
By her early appearances, she leads Rising Tide Valley and teaches numerous disciples. She is willing to help cultivators from other regions: when she meets Zhenke, she asks about her visits to Seeking Dao Mountain so that she can assess her foundation and offer suitable guidance 258 270. Roughly a thousand years later, younger cultivators still recognize Yunzi as a sect master of an exceptionally senior generation 425 429.
Appearance
- Face and eyes: Fair complexion, slender or willow-shaped brows, and bright eyes. Following her long separation from Fang Zelin, her appearance remains unchanged, but her eyes are described as exceptionally clear and unfathomable 264 278 315 383.
- Clothing: Wears Daoist robes and possesses a jade sash that drapes around her shoulders like a flowing scarf 396 407.
- Signs of injury: Develops a white lock at her temple after the Devil Race attack damages her vital Qi and threatens her lifespan 399.
Personality
Yunzi combines a sect leader’s authority with concern for her disciples. Wu Ling’s stalled cultivation frustrates her enough to make her question her own judgment as a teacher, but her intended reprimand becomes a helpless sigh. When Fang Zelin finally helps Wu Ling find her path, Yunzi is overjoyed and struggles to express sufficient thanks 272 274.
Her compassion extends to ordinary people and fellow cultivators. She sends disciples to treat sick villagers and teaches that helping a fellow Daoist should not depend on receiving gifts. She also avoids premature judgments: when a drought raises suspicions about a locally worshipped pangolin, she insists on investigating before deciding whether her disciple was deceived 278 296.
She is nevertheless decisive against dangerous enemies. She recognizes an overseas demon’s attempt to plant doubts among her disciples and argues that it cannot be allowed to live. Later, she orders captured Devil Race mighty figures kept alive for strategic reasons, not out of mercy 294 450.
Around Fang Zelin, her usual composure often gives way to shyness, teasing, and concealed affection. She blushes at her disciples’ matchmaking, secretly keeps his clothing, and is pleased to learn that he has not taken a dao companion. She can also be relaxed and uninhibited with him, drinking freely from his wine gourd 304 358 383.
Abilities & Skills
Divination and Heavenly Secrets
- Practices divination for many years and can use hexagrams to locate people and investigate their circumstances 358 396.
- Uses Fang Zelin’s garment as a connection to locate him in Qinlan City; his cultivation makes locating him without such an aid difficult 358.
- Initially fails to trace the Devil Cultivators through their abandoned corpses 384.

- Rising Tide Valley disciples — Students she teaches and commands. They tease her about Fang Zelin, but their mutual loyalty becomes explicit when she refuses to abandon them during the Devil Race attack 304 308 397.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Northern Liang Demon Investigation
Yunzi meets Fang Zelin directly after he rescues her group by binding attacking demons with golden seal-script characters. She thanks him, introduces Rising Tide Valley, and welcomes him into their investigation 264 266.
Their travels combine demon hunting with aid to mortals. At Wandering Oriole Village, she sends disciples to treat illness and later orders others to restore the diverted water vein once the pangolin’s tribulation has ended. She and Fang Zelin then investigate the greater yao responsible for the drought 278 279.
As evidence emerges of an overseas Demon Race plot against cultivators’ fate, she questions demons and coordinates with other Daoists. She and Fang Zelin eventually lead an assault in which they handle the great demons while the younger cultivators fight lesser opponents 285 290 293 296 299.
Growing Attachment to Fang Zelin
Fang Zelin’s guidance of her disciples prompts repeated attempts to repay him. Her students propose that she become his dao companion, an idea that unexpectedly moves her. She offers to wash his clothes, later supplies an awkwardly made replacement, and claims the original was ruined 274 304 308.
The original garment remains intact in her keeping. She uses it to locate Fang Zelin and becomes unsettled when a second divination indicates a woman traveling beside him. Much later, she learns that the woman was a river-snail demon, easing a worry she had carried for years 358 407.
Devil Race Discovery and Rising Tide Valley’s Destruction
After Fang Zelin returns from a long absence, Yunzi recounts the cultivators’ costly victory over a small number of Devil Cultivators. She agrees to search for their hidden grounds, despite her earlier inability to trace them 383 384.
Her Heavenly Secrets Grand Formation succeeds in locating their dwelling and the stolen karmic fortune. However, a great cultivator detects her and retaliates through the formation. Yunzi refuses her disciples’ pleas to flee and attempts to defend the valley with their combined starlight. Many disciples die before Fang Zelin arrives and shatters the palm 396 397.
Yunzi survives with a failing foundation. Concerned about wasting valuable medicine on herself, she initially resists treatment; she also asks Fang Zelin not to risk the Heavenly Tribulation associated with refining a Heaven-Mending Pill for her sake 399 401.
Recovery and the Aquatic Race Crisis
After recovering, Yunzi remains at Fang Zelin’s residence to guard him while he treats the Devil Qi contaminating his Dharma Aspect. Her own attainment grows through the pill’s effects and observation of his cultivation 403 404 407.
She then investigates an Aquatic Race plot and discovers waves threatening Great Qian’s populated coast. Unable to stop the assembled Aquatic Race alone, she summons other cultivators. Daoist Lü’s treasure suppresses the tsunami before it can engulf the coastal cities 406 407 411.
Law Treasures and the Renewed Devil Race Conflict
Following Great Qian’s fall, Yunzi travels with Fang Zelin to eliminate demons harming mortals. She identifies the Ten Thousand Demons Forest in the outer seas as the location of a hidden passage to the Devil Race 420.
Inspired by Fang Zelin’s accounts of legendary treasures, she proposes gathering cultivators to forge comparable protections for the immortal sects. She helps organize the gathering and later supports Fang Zelin when the completed treasure leaves him exhausted 421 426 429 434.
During preparations against the Devil Race, she instructs disciples to watch for reinforcements and coordinates with the sect leaders. Once enemy mighty figures are captured and weakened, she orders them imprisoned rather than killed to avoid alerting their homeland 445 450. When demons and devils subsequently overrun mortal dynasties, she urges immediate aid for the surviving Shang Dynasty and Great Yu 452.
