Background / History
Early Cultivation and Great Jin’s Calamity
Zhenke became Yunyi’s disciple after passing the Heart-Questioning Trial. Despite that success, she initially struggled to find the threshold of Seeking Dao Mountain. Yunyi brought her to Jade Void Mountain to seek guidance from Qingyun and Qingcheng, whose Dao attainments exceeded her own 152.
With Great Jin approaching a calamity, Yunyi warned that she might die fighting demons and leave Jade Willow Mountain to Zhenke. Zhenke hoped the mysterious True Person Daomiao could prevent the coming losses, but Qingyun did not know his whereabouts. Yunyi urged her to turn her fear of losing her master into diligent cultivation so that she could eventually protect ordinary people herself 152.
Traveling with Fang Zelin
After benefiting from Fang Zelin’s Scripture of Salvation, Zhenke asked to accompany him on his travels, hoping to learn from him. Yunyi agreed, teasing her about whether she also wanted to change masters. Zhenke joined the investigation into disappearances in Yining County and encountered the remains of people devoured by demons 173 176 177.
She later served as a messenger during the search for a new ruler, bringing Fang Zelin the results of her martial uncles’ stellar observations. She directed him to meet the prospective ruler fifty li north of Yingping Peak, where he would wear a golden crown at noon the next day 200.
Northern Liang Investigation
After more than forty years of cultivation, Yunyi judged Zhenke capable of handling matters independently. At Zhen’an Pass, she guarded the scene where two cultivators had been killed and cast an illusion to prevent people from wandering into it. When Fang Zelin arrived, she joined his investigation into the deaths and the mysterious black cloud connected to them 226 227.
Their journey exposed gaps in her worldly experience. After expensive lodging forced them to sleep in a rain shelter, she asked why cultivators could not simply use Turning Stone into Gold to relieve poverty. Fang Zelin explained the spell’s risks and the wider consequences of distributing gold. His conduct toward impoverished villagers and a water ghost also helped her understand virtue as a practical responsibility rather than merely a teaching to memorize 230 231 233 234 235.
When the investigation revealed a plot against Northern Liang’s cultivators, Fang Zelin sent her to Dinggui Mountain. She returned the bodies of Chunyun and Danyan to Daoist Master Fuqing and stayed to brief the assembled cultivators. Her five entries into Seeking Dao Mountain astonished them, although she sincerely attributed most of that progress to Fang Zelin rather than her own aptitude 248 249 250 258 259.
While assisting Rising Tide Valley cultivators, Zhenke intercepted an ape demon’s attack with her flying sword. The ape subsequently immobilized her with its Divine Ability and nearly swallowed her before Fang Zelin intervened. He sternly criticized her lack of combat experience. She later fought alongside the cultivators again, using her sword to kill a demon, and eventually returned to Great Qian to report to her sect 263 264 302 327.
Ancestor and Sect Leader
By the time Fang Zelin returned to Jade Void Mountain centuries later, Zhenke had become an ancestor of Jade Willow Mountain. Qin Xuzi reported that Yunyi and many other cultivators had died fighting Devil Cultivators 382.
Zhenke continued helping Fang Zelin, bringing him powerful earthfire containing lightning to aid his efforts to remove Devil Qi from his Dharma Form. She also warned him that the Aquatic Race intended to flood Great Qian’s river cities and supplied pearls taken from its members when Yunzi sought objects connected to them 404 405.
After roughly a thousand years of cultivation, she was recognized as Jade Willow Mountain’s sect leader. During the collaborative Law Treasure project at Jade Void Mountain, she organized her disciples efficiently, checked on Fang Zelin’s recovery, and asked whether divination could reveal their chances of success. Fang Zelin praised her increasingly composed leadership 425 431.
In a later reunion, Zhenke was overjoyed to see Fang Zelin. With her master gone and few familiar faces remaining, she especially valued his continued presence 458.
Appearance
Zhenke retains a youthful appearance despite her long cultivation: she looks to be in her early twenties after more than forty years, and Fang Zelin later observes that her appearance has remained much the same 226 431.
- Clothing: An emerald-green robe 228.
- Hair: Raven-black tresses worn pinned up 228.
- Eyes: Clear, crystalline eyes, frequently described as brightening with curiosity or delight 228 231 235.
- Bearing: Initially likened to an immortal maiden; later distinguished by a steadier manner and more restrained presence 228 431.
Personality
Zhenke is affectionate and deeply attached to those close to her. Her fear of Yunyi’s death dominates her early response to Great Jin’s calamity, while her later reunions with Fang Zelin show how strongly she values surviving old acquaintances 152 458.
Her compassion is sincere but initially inexperienced. Hearing about impoverished families makes her wish that magic could bring prosperity to everyone, without first considering its consequences. She is receptive to correction and gradually learns from Fang Zelin’s attention to both immediate suffering and the effects of intervention 230 233 234.
She consistently underrates her aptitude. Even after entering Seeking Dao Mountain five times in a little over forty years, she calls her talent average because four of those breakthroughs came through Fang Zelin’s guidance. Yunzi initially mistakes this assessment for extraordinary modesty 258 259.
Her admiration for Fang Zelin is unusually open. She enthusiastically describes his cultivation, wine, and spirit sword to other cultivators, but becomes anxious when she thinks her praise might misrepresent him. Over time, her youthful eagerness develops into the calm, orderly conduct expected of a sect leader 261 431.
