Personality
Yu Xiaogang takes considerable pride in his theoretical knowledge and teaching reputation. After accepting the Twin Martial Soul possessor Tang San, he repeatedly refuses to teach Lin Gu because he considers the boy’s apparent clothing Martial Soul worthless. His position reverses when he mistakenly concludes that Lin Gu also possesses Twin Martial Souls: he offers to make an exception to his one-disciple rule, then disparages Lin Gu after being rejected 1 3 7.
He is cautious about Soul Ring absorption but reluctant to reconsider his assumptions. He repeatedly recommends Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo and insists that a thousand-year first Soul Ring is impossible, only to witness Lin Gu successfully absorb one. His concern for the children coexists with concern for himself: he regrets being unable to protect Lin Gu during the snake attack, while privately fearing Tang Hao’s retaliation if Tang San dies 3 4 5 6.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Soul: Luo Sanpao
Luo Sanpao attacks through powerful bursts of flatulence 3.
- Named attack: “Farting like thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao!” produces three successive blasts 3.
- Combat limitation: The attack fails against the four-hundred-year Mandala Snake, which defeats Yu Xiaogang with a tail strike 3.
- Durability: Lin Gu estimates Yu Xiaogang’s health at approximately 10,000 HP after gaining 1,000 HP from a Heartsteel strike against him. This is Lin Gu’s calculation rather than a displayed status panel for Yu Xiaogang 2.
Martial Soul and Soul Beast Theory
Yu Xiaogang provides instruction on Soul Rings, Martial Soul changes, and Soul Beast characteristics, though several of his assessments fail to account for Lin Gu’s equipment-based Martial Soul 2 3 5 7.
| Subject | Advice or Assessment | Demonstrated Result |
|---|---|---|
| First Soul Ring age | Gives 423 years as the general maximum; recommends much younger rings for ordinary Soul Masters 3. | Tang San absorbs a snake ring identified afterward as 422 years old, despite Yu Xiaogang’s warnings 4 5. |
| Solitary Bamboo | Recommends its toughness for Blue Silver Grass and Lin Gu’s defensive build 3 5. | Neither child selects it 4 6. |
| Boulder Turtle anatomy | Identifies the area between its brows as its weak point 5. | Attacking that point breaks its defenses and enables the children to defeat it 6. |
| Thousand-year first Soul Ring | Declares it impossible for a six-year-old to withstand 6. | Lin Gu succeeds and reaches rank thirteen 6. |
| Lin Gu’s wooden knife | Interprets the newly unlocked weapon slot as a second Martial Soul 7. | The knife is part of Lin Gu’s single Equipment Slot Martial Soul, not a separate Martial Soul 7 17. |
Background / History
Taking Tang San as a Disciple
At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang wins Tang San over with his theoretical knowledge and accepts him as his disciple. He mocks Lin Gu’s white clothing-like Martial Soul, hoping to discourage the other child from seeking the same instruction, and declares that he will take only one disciple in his lifetime 1.
Lin Gu tricks him into turning around and kicks him, completing a system quest worth one hundred gold coins. Later, Lin Gu returns with a false apology and uses his transformed breastplate as a distraction for another kick. This second attack triggers Heartsteel and grants Lin Gu 1,000 HP 1 2.
Tang Hao arrives during the second incident and presents a Pope Token. Yu Xiaogang initially dismisses Lin Gu’s warning as another trick, then becomes visibly shaken upon seeing the token and learning the visitor’s identity 2.
First Soul Ring Expedition
After enduring several days of surprise kicks, Yu Xiaogang agrees to help Lin Gu hunt his first Soul Ring in exchange for an end to the attacks. Since he is already taking Tang San hunting, he brings both children into the Soul Hunting Forest and explains Soul Ring selection along the way 3.
A Mandala Snake defeats him despite his attempt to protect the children. When its tail strikes Lin Gu, Yu Xiaogang believes the boy has died and blames his own weakness. Lin Gu instead emerges unharmed and restrains the snake, allowing Tang San to attack with a dagger supplied by Yu Xiaogang 3 4.
Yu Xiaogang advises abandoning the resulting Soul Ring because of its age. Tang San insists on trying, so he agrees to stand guard. After Tang San succeeds, Yu Xiaogang explains the changes to Blue Silver Grass and later attributes the success partly to his own teaching 4 5.
Lin Gu’s Challenge to His Theories
Yu Xiaogang accompanies the children as they search for Lin Gu’s Soul Ring, despite opposing the boy’s plan to absorb a thousand-year ring. During their battle with a Boulder Turtle, he eventually reveals its weak point, helping them overcome its defenses 5 6.
He repeatedly predicts disaster during Lin Gu’s absorption, but the boy survives and becomes a rank-thirteen Soul Master. Yu Xiaogang is left speechless, then dismisses Lin Gu’s newly acquired shielding skill as unimpressive 6.
When Lin Gu unlocks a wooden knife in his second equipment slot, Yu Xiaogang mistakes it for another Martial Soul. He offers to accept Lin Gu as a disciple, but Lin Gu refuses and leaves. Yu Xiaogang escorts Tang San back while boasting of his theoretical standing 7.
Relationships
- Tang San — His disciple. Tang San initially listens attentively, but increasingly questions his judgment after seeing his combat weakness and Lin Gu’s achievements. Nevertheless, he follows Yu Xiaogang’s instruction not to join Spirit Hall 1 3 7 8.
- Lin Gu — An antagonistic acquaintance whom he initially dismisses as untalented. Lin Gu repeatedly kicks him for quests and Heartsteel gains, obtains his help with Soul Ring hunting, and rejects his eventual apprenticeship offer 1 2 3 7.
- Tang Hao — Tang San’s father. His identity and Pope Token intimidate Yu Xiaogang, who later fears the consequences if Tang San dies during Soul Ring absorption 2 5.
