Background / History

Gao Shang’s father, a former Spirit Hall deacon, guided Su Yuntao onto the path he followed. Su Yuntao continued helping Gao Shang out of gratitude toward his father. Three years before Gao Shang’s Martial Soul awakening, he purchased Sun Meng, who had sold herself into servitude, to care for the young boy 1 13.

Gao Shang regularly gave Su Yuntao a share of the Happy Milk Tea Shop’s profits in thanks for his assistance. This improved Su Yuntao’s finances and helped his long pursuit of Sisi go more smoothly; the two officially became a couple shortly before Gao Shang’s whale-rubber purchases 3.

As a Nuoding City deacon, Su Yuntao travels to nearby villages to awaken children’s Martial Souls. His wolf transformation frequently frightens children into tears, forcing him to calm them before continuing. He has asked Ma Xiunuo for another assignment, but the branch’s limited personnel and his suitability for awakening work make reassignment difficult 8 9.

Personality

Su Yuntao is affectionate and protective toward Gao Shang. Although he privately doubts the prospects of an eye Martial Soul with rank-one Innate Soul Power, he encourages the boy, gives him a meditation manual, and offers to answer his cultivation questions. He checks that Gao Shang is not genuinely dejected before returning to work 1.

Their familiarity also brings out his teasing, competitive side. Before their spar, he entertains the idea of giving Gao Shang’s newly handsome face a black eye. He is pleased by the boy’s strength, but reluctant to suffer the embarrassment of losing to a junior who has only just become a Soul Master 9.

He respects Gao Shang’s choices despite wanting to recruit him into Spirit Hall. Once Gao Shang refuses, Su Yuntao agrees not to force the issue. By contrast, the possibility of a Fallen Soul Master operating in Nuoding City immediately makes him serious and prompts him to report the matter 8 17.

Gao Shang’s Awakening

Su Yuntao records Gao Shang’s original results—an eye Martial Soul and rank-one Innate Soul Power—and gives him a basic meditation manual. Unaware that Gao Shang’s system is about to activate, he sends him home with encouragement and an invitation to return for help 1.

Apparent Martial Soul Mutation and Sparring

When Gao Shang returns with a changed appearance and claims his Martial Soul has mutated, Su Yuntao is shocked by his rapid rise to One-Ring Soul Master. Seeing a purple first ring, he urges Gao Shang to join Spirit Hall so its higher authorities can support his cultivation. Gao Shang refuses and uses Genjutsu to conceal the ring’s true age 8.

Their subsequent spar gives Gao Shang an early benchmark against a Two-Ring Soul Grandmaster. Su Yuntao finishes bruised and impressed, judging the boy unusually strong among One-Ring Soul Masters. Gao Shang invites him and Sisi to dinner in thanks 9 10.

Dinner and the Wedding Dress

At the Fortune and Prosperity Pavilion, Gao Shang produces an expensive gauze dress and credits Su Yuntao with having arranged its purchase. Recognizing the assistance, Su Yuntao immediately presents it to Sisi as a dress prepared for their wedding, moving her to tears 15 16.

Investigation into Zhou Qi

Gao Shang persuades Su Yuntao to seek Spirit Hall’s help by suggesting that Zhou Qi’s concealed strength and ruthless behavior might indicate a Fallen Soul Master. The allegation is deliberately invented by Gao Shang to make Spirit Hall take the threat seriously. Su Yuntao promises to report it to Matthew Nuo and request support from the higher-level Martial Soul Sub-Hall 17.

Su Yuntao later delivers the investigation’s findings: Zhou Qi is neither a Fallen Soul Master nor a Star Luo spy, but apparently fled another city after offending someone. Crucially, the investigation identifies him as a rank-46 Four-Ring Soul Ancestor, giving Gao Shang the information needed to plan his next move 21.

• Gao Shang uses Su Yuntao’s relationship with Sisi as cover when buying whale rubber. Zhao Gang mistakenly infers that Su Yuntao needs it for an intimate health problem; the supposed condition is not real 3.
