Gu Yuan recounts these milestones after completing his cultivation to Immortal Emperor; the earlier advancements occur before the main story 1.

Background / History

Gu Yuan transmigrated into the world a million years before the main story. During his prolonged cultivation, he occasionally entered mortal society to temper his heart and forge his Dao heart. These visits connected him to Spirit Hall and numerous people whose identities had become indistinct in his memory by the time he emerged from seclusion 1 13.

On one such visit, he met the young Qian Daoliu and summoned the Angel God to bless him. Qian Daoliu subsequently became his devoted follower. Gu Yuan also devised the Divine Grace Ceremony, held every ten years in the Worship Hall, through which selected candidates could receive blessings before his statue 1.

Twenty years before their reunion, Gu Yuan rescued five-year-old Bibi Dong and brought her to Spirit Hall. She called him “brother” and became his sworn younger sister. He instructed Qian Daoliu to appoint her Saintess, remained with her for slightly more than six months, and gave her a dragon-shaped jade pendant before leaving. His parting joke that she should become an Empress ruling the world became her ambition for the next twenty years 2 3.

Upon attaining the Immortal Emperor realm, Gu Yuan discovered that he had been cultivating in Douluo rather than the powerful fantasy world he had expected. He intended to depart for the myriad worlds, but the Douluo Heavenly Dao warned that forcing open the weakened world barrier would destroy the realm. Unwilling to sacrifice its inhabitants, he postponed his departure and began searching for Primordial Origin Crystals to repair the barrier 1.

Personality

Gu Yuan combines overwhelming confidence with a remaining sense of responsibility. Although the Heavenly Dao cannot compel him, he refuses to destroy the world merely to leave it. He is equally unconcerned with local divine authority: destiny, karma, and the Douluo leveling system cannot restrain him 1 4 19.

He is openly affectionate toward Bibi Dong, indulging her clinginess and supporting her ambition to become Empress. His protectiveness is also ruthless: remembering that Tang Hao and Tang San threatened her in the original storyline, he decides that potential threats to her must be eliminated 2 5 17.

Gu Yuan enjoys observing disrupted fate and teasing those around him. He allows Ah Yin to pretend he is her lover because he finds the situation entertaining, then frightens her with a joke before admitting that he means her no harm. His interest in the Heavenly Dao’s attempts to repair the storyline eventually develops into an investigation of outside interference 15 17 18 20.

As a mentor, he values earned rewards and a stable Dao heart. He avoids simply granting everyone overwhelming power, reasoning that effortless advancement can damage their mentality. He also regards conviction, original aspirations, and a childlike heart as more valuable than excessive scheming 5 26.
