Background / History
Previous Life and Early Education
Tang San was a Tang Sect assassin in his previous life. He retains the sect’s hidden-weapon knowledge and movement techniques, but lacks access to some former resources, such as Corpse-Dissolving Water 4 20 34.
Shangguan Hong met him as a child in Holy Soul Village. Tang San’s father is Tang Hao, whom Tang San initially regards as an ordinary blacksmith. Tang Hao privately identifies him with the Clear Sky Sect and considers whether Shangguan Hong might eventually become one of its affiliated Soul Masters 2 4 14.
Tang San studies under Yu Xiaogang and graduates from Nuoding City Junior Soul Master Academy alongside Xiao Wu. They leave as record-breaking graduates and travel to Suotuo City to apply to Shrek Academy on Yu Xiaogang’s recommendation 3 8.
Arrival in Suotuo City
Tang San initially urges Xiao Wu not to provoke Shangguan Hong, recognizing that the unfamiliar boy is stronger than himself. His wariness eases when Shangguan Hong presents himself as another prospective Shrek student. Although Xiao Wu finds their new acquaintance unsettling, Tang San argues that they should not reject a future companion 3 4 5.
At the Rose Hotel, Tang San confronts Dai Mubai and fights alongside Shangguan Hong. The encounter exposes the gap between his own strength and that of talented Soul Elders. He responds by reaffirming his reliance on Tang Sect hidden weapons and planning to produce the Dragon Whisker Needle from a newly acquired plate crystal 5 6 7 8.
During Shrek’s entrance examination, he introduces the applicants before they face Zhao Wuji. After Xiao Wu is injured, he begins a separate one-on-one fight with the examiner. He also becomes grateful to Shangguan Hong, whose summon helped absorb the enemy’s attacks 11 14.
Blue Sunshine Academy Incident
During the confrontation with Blue Sunshine Academy, Tang San helps restrain its students and takes part in killing them under Zhao Wuji’s supervision. He initially hesitates, then convinces himself that leaving enemies alive could bring retaliation and endanger Xiao Wu 20.
He witnesses Shangguan Hong’s apparently reluctant use of Wrath of the Void to dispose of the bodies, accepting the explanation that the summon is weak despite its evil presence. Believing his friend has been shaken by killing, Tang San tries to comfort him. Back at the inn, he persuades the other Shrek students to accept their actions as a response to Ye Zhiqiu’s killing intent and the threat of future revenge 20 21.
Star Dou Great Forest
Tang San organizes the party’s formation and uses Yu Xiaogang’s teachings to help the group avoid trouble. When the Dragon Duke threatens them, he refuses to abandon Zhao Wuji and insists on returning to help. He nevertheless leaves the injured Xiao Wu with Oscar, using Oscar’s need for protection as a reason to keep her away from danger 21 24 25.
After the Titan Giant Ape carries Xiao Wu away, Tang San attempts to stop it with throwing knives, collapses in anguish, and then consumes Oscar’s recovery food. He uses a Flying Mushroom Sausage to pursue her despite his companions’ protests 28 29.
During the pursuit, he binds a Man Faced Demon Spider and attacks its exposed abdomen with the Godly Zhuge Crossbow. Unknown to him, Shangguan Hong secretly stimulates the dying beast with Void corruption, stages a rescue, and steals its external Soul Bone. Tang San instead receives the spider’s Soul Ring, successfully becoming a Soul Elder without obtaining the Eight Spider Lances 16 29 30 31.
Sparring and Arena Leadership
At Yu Xiaogang’s request, Tang San spars with Shangguan Hong. He uses Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track and Blue Silver Grass to evade the sand soldiers, bypass Azir, and land Spider Web Restraint on the summoner. However, restraining Shangguan Hong does not disable his summons; Azir kicks Tang San away, and Tang San surrenders 33 34.
Against the Mad Battle Team, Tang San prioritizes protecting the rear formation and eventually sends his companions out of the arena. Left facing five frenzied Soul Elders, he survives through Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track until their enhancement expires, then eliminates them. The victory establishes his position as the team’s dependable core 41 42.
Yu Xiaogang’s restriction on Shangguan Hong’s abilities and the resulting injuries begin to undermine Tang San’s unquestioning trust in his teacher. Shangguan Hong appears to mediate the disagreement, but deliberately encourages Tang San to see Yu Xiaogang as fallible 41 43 44 45.
Against the Imperial Fighting Team, Tang San coordinates Yu Tianheng’s encirclement and uses Blue Silver Grass to separate him from his teammates. He later counters Dugu Yan’s poison mist with realgar wine vaporized by Dai Mubai’s White Tiger Fierce Light Wave 48 50.
Dugu Bo and the Immortal-Grade Herbs
Dugu Bo takes Tang San away from the academy after becoming interested in him through Dugu Yan. Resistance proves futile, although Flender and Yu Xiaogang obtain a promise that Tang San’s life will be spared 63.
Tang San bargains through his poison expertise. With Dugu Bo’s medicinal treasures available, he claims a ninety-percent chance of curing Dugu Yan’s Spirit-Sealing Snake Poison and a thirty-percent chance of curing Dugu Bo. Dugu Bo offers three favors, within his own limits, if Tang San can remove his granddaughter’s poison 65.
Entrusted with the treasures, Tang San identifies eight immortal-grade herbs suitable for himself and his companions. He reluctantly reserves the exceptionally valuable Holy Origin Fruit for Shangguan Hong, choosing gratitude for his supposed rescues over his own desire for the fruit. Six months after being taken away, Tang San returns at rank 36 and presents it to him 65.
Appearance
- Hair: Blue 3.
- Build: Well-proportioned, with the agility and core strength to vault between weapons during combat 34.
- Notable accessory: A belt given to him by Yu Xiaogang; later passages identify his storage tool as Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges 3 8.
Personality
Tang San is cautious around unfamiliar powers but places strong value on loyalty once he accepts someone as a companion. He discourages needless conflict on arriving in Suotuo City, defends Shangguan Hong against Xiao Wu’s suspicions, and refuses to leave Zhao Wuji facing a superior enemy alone 3 5 25.
His protectiveness toward Xiao Wu can override practical judgment. Her capture drives him to pursue the Titan Giant Ape despite exhaustion, injury, and the near-impossibility of rescuing her by force. He also justifies lethal action against potential enemies partly through the need to keep her safe 20 28 29.
He takes pride in his talent, Twin Martial Souls, and Tang Sect inheritance. Shangguan Hong’s superior strength repeatedly unsettles that confidence, eventually producing a faint jealousy alongside genuine affection. Tang San channels much of this insecurity into making stronger hidden weapons for himself and his teammates 8 31 52 54.
Gratitude makes him vulnerable to Shangguan Hong’s manipulation. He interprets staged distress as kindness and engineered rescues as proof of friendship. Nevertheless, his decision to give Shangguan Hong the Holy Origin Fruit shows that he can place repayment of a perceived debt above a substantial personal benefit 21 29 65.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang San’s identified Martial Soul specializes in binding, battlefield control, and repositioning allies 6 11 48.
| Soul Skill | Ring | Applications and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Entanglement | First; hundred-year | Produces binding strands. Used to restrain Dai Mubai, obstruct enemy formations, and catch Azir’s scepter long enough to vault past him 6 34 48. |
| Parasite | Second; hundred-year | Seeds carried by Blue Silver Grass sprout on a target and bind them. Used against Dai Mubai and Shangguan Hong 7 33. |
| Spider Web Restraint | Third; roughly two-thousand-year | Launches a woven sphere that expands into a poisonous restraining web. At his demonstrated cultivation, he can use it only three times daily. Immobilizing a summoner does not stop independent summons 30 33 34. |
- Pulls Dai Mubai out of danger using Blue Silver Grass 48.
- Combines bindings with hidden weapons to expose and attack the Man Faced Demon Spider’s vulnerable abdomen 29.
- Uses its strands as temporary footholds during acrobatic maneuvers 34.

- Accurately throws knives and other concealed weapons during combat 20 28 29.
- Uses the Godly Zhuge Crossbow against the Man Faced Demon Spider 29.
- Completes sets of hidden weapons for every teammate, including Shangguan Hong 54.
- His thrown knives cannot meaningfully injure the Titan Giant Ape 28.

- Allows him to maneuver across enemy weapons and bypass defensive lines 34.
- Helps him survive the Mad Battle Team’s remaining Frenzy duration 42.

- Assesses possible treatments for Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan rather than guaranteeing complete success 65.
