Buddhist Kingdom in a Dream (Twelve)
Beneath the red bridal veil was actually a man's face-Zhao Kaiming's!
Yang Jian had never seen the Mummified Bride's face, so this dream could only use the mirror's supernatural power to substitute someone else's face.
At the same time, Zhao Kaiming's lifeless face was also reflected in the mirror.
Their gazes began to reflect.
Inside the mirror, without warning, a second great Buddha abruptly appeared in that space, as though it had always existed there and was only now being observed.
The instant the Buddha statue appeared, the female corpse toppled backward stiffly and lay motionless on the floor. Then it suddenly vanished, as though its existence had been replaced by the Buddha statue.
At the same time, the entire space of the World in the Mirror expanded along with it, growing even vaster, to the point where its end was no longer visible.
Suddenly, a faint sound echoed in the three of their ears. It was very quiet, like sutra chanting, yet also like the wailing of some corpse.
Yang Jian knew that because of their actions, the Buddha statues had begun stacking, invading this dream world in some unknown way. This chanting-like howl was the harbinger of that invasion.
Although it was still very faint, as the stacking continued, it would eventually exceed the upper limit of this dream's supernatural power.
Lin Bei immediately exclaimed in delight, "Captain Yang! Your method works!"
Yang Jian said nothing, observing in silence.
In this dream where nothing possessed supernatural power, Yang Jian had to use the Buddha statues in the World in the Mirror to kill these manifested ghosts as an ordinary person.
He could not afford to miss any information before him now.
In the hall, the ghosts were still approaching, rigidly following their killing rules. The abnormality in the mirror had not stopped their advance.
A second, a third-countless ghosts began closing in on the three of them.
But these ghosts could not get anywhere near them. The instant their bodies were reflected in the mirror, they fell to the ground and vanished.
Meanwhile, within that boundless World in the Mirror, the number of Buddha statues was increasing at an astonishing speed.
Gradually, the chanting-like roars in their ears grew louder and louder, their volume seemingly climbing continuously at a particular frequency.
At that moment, a strange expression that was almost a smile, yet not quite, actually emerged on Lin Bei's face, closely resembling that of the great Buddha.
Lin Bei clutched his head in pain. "Captain Yang, I feel awful..."
The great Buddha was invading, but Yang Jian had no choice now. He could only pat Lin Bei's shoulder and reassure him, "It's all right. Take deep breaths. It's perfectly normal to feel dizzy."
Crack... The sound of glass breaking rang out.
Yang Jian looked down. Within that endless World in the Mirror beneath his feet, the number of great Buddhas had already reached a terrifying figure. They sat densely packed inside, suffused with an eerie Buddhist radiance under the mirror's reflected light.
The World in the Mirror seemed to have reached its limit. Newly appearing great Buddhas actually began overlapping in layers. This space was almost unable to contain them.
Lin Bei clutched his head as a second expression gradually emerged on his face, making him look utterly eerie.
He suddenly roared, "Captain Yang! Something's coming!"
As he spoke, he moved to cover the mirror on the floor with such force that Yang Jian almost failed to hold him back with one hand.
Xiao Yuan immediately rushed over and pinned him to the floor together with Yang Jian.
The chanting-like wails echoed madly in their ears, deafening them.
Yang Jian shouted, "Hold on! It'll be over soon! The ghost will definitely attack us! That's its killing rule! No ghost can defy it! As long as it comes close, we win!"
The great Buddha was merely invading this dream. The real Lin Bei in reality was not undergoing ghost revival. The dream bore the entire cost of the stacking. If Lin Bei could get out alive, he would be able to truly control that great Buddha.
Yang Jian looked around. The surrounding ghosts had dwindled to a number he could count by eye. This attack was almost at its limit too.
But the ghost at the source of the nightmare had yet to appear.
Yang Jian's expression grew increasingly grave. He kept feeling that he had overlooked a crucial clue, but he still could not determine where the problem lay.
"Impossible. A ghost will definitely kill. That's its rule. It can't keep waiting like a human..."
He looked at the enormous Buddha statues stretching endlessly into the mirror.
"Could it be..."
Yang Jian suddenly thought of a startling possibility.
He and Xiao Yuan had once fallen into that World in the Mirror. He had always believed he had survived because the supernatural powers of the Buddha statue and the nightmare had counteracted each other.
But now, it seemed his judgment had been wrong. He had missed a crucial piece of information.
Perhaps at that moment, the dream had already invaded the Buddha statue and stolen some of its supernatural power...
And this dream could manifest events he had experienced...
In other words, the instant it invaded, this dream could absolutely have manifested in the form of a Buddha statue. A creation of that size would only have to brush against him to reduce him to dust and ashes.
But because the supernatural powers of the Buddha statue and the dream counteracted each other, it had indirectly helped him escape disaster.
Yang Jian abruptly realized something and lowered his head to look at that boundless expanse of Buddha statues. His judgment just now had been completely wrong. The true source ghost of the nightmare was right there among those endless Buddha statues!
Yang Jian pointed at the mirror and said, "The real source of the nightmare is in there..."
"Captain Yang, you're not joking, are you?"
Lin Bei looked inside at the densely packed great Buddhas that filled the entire space, stretching beyond the limits of his sight.
"With that many, never mind the statues' supernatural power-even if they stood there and let us kill them, we'd never finish."
As though utterly deflated, Lin Bei slumped to the floor.
Yang Jian turned his head and stared at the ghosts before him, which kept approaching and disappearing, quietly thinking.
He had become a captain-level ghost handler not because the ghosts he controlled were so powerful, but because of his own understanding of the supernatural.
In other words, perhaps anyone could control the Ghost Eye, but only Yang Jian could draw out its supernatural power to the utmost.
Time passed, second by second. The plan had already failed. The chanting-like wails had battered their ears until they bled, and cracks gradually spread across the mirror beneath their feet. The World in the Mirror could barely contain those all-encompassing Buddha statues anymore.
Yang Jian knew he had little time left. He needed to devise a new plan within this extremely brief window.
But he did not panic, continuing to analyze the situation calmly.
"No..."
Yang Jian shook his head.
"We still have a chance."
Yang Jian pointed at Lin Bei as he spoke.
"And you are that chance."
Lin Bei froze, not understanding what Yang Jian was talking about at all.
"The Buddha statue you control wasn't dragged into the dream. It invaded through the stacking of its own supernatural power..."
Yang Jian continued, "So once the Buddha statue has fully invaded, you'll regain your supernatural power. But at the same time, this many ghosts may cause you to undergo ghost revival immediately."
Yang Jian helped Lin Bei to his feet. By now, that almost-smiling expression on his face had become extremely pronounced.
"But this is also our chance. The source ghost in the dream is among these Buddha statues."
"And what you need to do is use your supernatural power within that brief window to kill the source of the nightmare hiding among the Buddha statues."
