Personality

Yang Jian approaches supernatural incidents by identifying rules, testing explanations, and looking for contradictions he can exploit. He recognizes that Liu San’s attacker exists within his altered vision, distinguishes the village chief’s reappearance from a restart, and defeats the Ghost Bride through conflicting supernatural obligations rather than brute force 13 23 31.

He is decisive and often ruthless when time is limited. He kills a Reform Society member despite an offer to negotiate and beheads Li Yi to force the post office tenants to explain their presence. Nevertheless, he distinguishes violence from indiscriminate killing: after Li Yi revives, he does not attack again, and he later forbids Xiao Yuan from continuing to kill people she mistakes for ghosts 16 28 45.

Gratitude and loyalty strongly influence his decisions. He risks himself repeatedly to save Zhang Wei, investigates the identity of the stranger who sacrificed himself in the hurricane, and treats Li Yang’s mother once he learns who she is 25 34 35. His mother draws out a noticeably more apologetic and human side of him; his distance from her is partly an effort to keep his supernatural troubles away from his family 33.

His ordinary emotional range returns inside the dream when his ghost abilities disappear. Even there, he remains suspicious and self-reliant, rejecting a decade-old plan proposed by an anomaly carrying his father’s memories 37 39 49.

Ghost Eye and Ghost Domain

The Ghost Eye produces scarlet light and a layered Ghost Domain used for movement, suppression, and increasingly powerful temporal effects 13 16 18 26.

• Sixth-layer time stop: Recognizes an enemy’s freezing effect as similar to the time stop produced by his own sixth-layer domain 16.
• Seventh-layer self-restart: Repeatedly restores his damaged body, including while the hurricane tears apart his manifested Ghost Eye 18.
• Targeted restart: Restarts the weakened Ghost Lake corpse and later restores Ye Zhen’s living appearance 18 30.

Ghost Shadow

The Ghost Shadow can manipulate bodies, establish a medium for his billhook, and carry other supernatural abilities 9 18 25.

• Restart medium: Envelops the Ghost Lake corpse while the Ghost Eye repeatedly restarts it 18.
• Alternate bodily form: Continues acting after his visible body collapses under the Ghost Bride’s attack 24 25.
• Billhook medium: Covers a target so his weapon can strike through the resulting supernatural connection 25.
• Limits: Can be torn apart by the hurricane or split by the backlash of his own dismembering attack 17 25.

Ghost Lake and Anomaly State

Yang Jian controls the Ghost Lake through an unstable arrangement in which the lake corpse continually attempts to invade him 18.

• Flooding and restraint: Releases lake water to engulf enemies and obstruct supernatural attacks 23 25.
• Suppression cycle: Restarts himself when the female corpse surfaces, then turns the lake against her to force her beneath the lakebed 18.
• Linked survival: His anomaly state ties his survival to the unkillable female corpse, but a successful invasion by her would still kill him 18.

Yang Jian can remain effective even when deprived of his ghosts, relying on observation and the interaction of killing rules 40 42 49.

• Rule deduction: Identifies the eye-replacement ghost’s attack and recognizes that the Reform Society’s apparent prediction involves altering the recent past 13 17.
• Conflicting rules: Uses the Marriage Certificate, Ghost Post Office, and Ghost Bride’s own behavior to trap her in an indefinite loop 30 31.
• Dream analysis: Recognizes manifestations drawn from his fears and experiences, then uses Lin Bei’s mirrors to reach the dream’s source 39 42 44.

• Zhang Wei — Classmate and close friend who calls him “Brother Leg.” Yang Jian enters the wedding village to rescue him and uses an eighth-layer restart to save his life 20 21 26.
• Ye Zhen — Fellow ghost handler and major ally during the headquarters and wedding crises. Their cooperation saves Zhang Wei and traps the Ghost Bride; Ye Zhen also helps improve Yang Jian’s Ghost Lake control 9 25 30 31.
• Jiang Yan — Describes herself as his girlfriend and manages his company. She alerts him to Zhang Wei’s danger and tries to support him outside supernatural work 20 21 32.
• Wang Shanshan — A supernatural existence dependent on him, with an unexplained connection that may transfer his injuries to her. He brings her home to meet his mother; she describes herself as barely counting as his girlfriend 33 34.

• Li Yang — A stranger from a stretch of the future who recognizes him as his captain and dies helping him escape the hurricane. Yang Jian investigates his identity and saves his mother, Liu Jing 18 34 35.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Out of Control

During the combined Hungry Ghost, Ghost Messenger, and Ghost Painting crisis, Yang Jian enters the changed Huanggang Village with Tong Qian and Li Leping. The group becomes trapped among seemingly endless coffins, and he uses the Human Skin Drum to recover Li Leping after a failed search for the source 2 5.

After regrouping with other handlers, he combines domains with Li Jun to locate the Ghost Painting. When the Hungry Ghost swallows the Ghost Coffin and acquires the Ghost Messenger’s power, Yang Jian uses the Dead Man’s Banner and Ghost Eyes to restart the area. The four-second reversal gives him the opportunity to force the Hungry Ghost into the coffin 8 9 10.

Lake and Wind

Investigating the hurricane with Liu San brings Yang Jian into conflict with the Reform Society. He identifies a vision-based attack, confronts corpses capable of restarting an area and altering its recent past, and receives unexpected help from Li Yang, who calls him “Captain” despite being unknown to him 12 13 16 17.

Inside the escalating tornado, Yang Jian gains control of the Ghost Lake by repeatedly restarting its female corpse. The operation nevertheless ends in failure. Li Yang dies after referring to Yang Jian’s future as his own past, prompting Yang Jian to investigate both his rescuer and the Reform Society 18.

Double Happiness

Yang Jian answers Jiang Yan’s warning and joins Zhang Wei and Ye Zhen in a village that has appeared in Dahai City. The village identifies Zhang Wei as its groom, binding him to a lethal wedding procession 21 23.

Direct suppression and dismemberment fail against the restarting bridal corpse. Yang Jian independently opens an eighth-layer domain to save Zhang Wei, then works to rescue Ye Zhen after the latter becomes entangled in the wedding 25 26 29.

By rewriting the Marriage Certificate within its existing rules and involving Liu Qingqing’s post office mission, Yang Jian creates an incomplete bride identity. The corpse becomes trapped between approaching the Ghost Post Office and repeating the wedding ritual—a loop that will persist unless another supernatural force intervenes 30 31.

A Buddhist Kingdom in Dreams

Yang Jian returns to Meishan Village to investigate his father and meet his mother with Wang Shanshan. After learning Li Yang’s identity, he travels to DQ City and removes Liu Jing’s otherwise inoperable tumor 33 34 35.

A supernatural attack draws him into a dream where his left hand and ghost abilities are absent. Alongside Xiao Yuan and Lin Bei, he faces manifestations of his past experiences and fears. Their mirror-based plan exposes the source, and he apparently escapes, restarts himself and Lin Bei, and seals his father’s memorial portrait in a gold body bag 37 39 42 44.

Before leaving the village, he arranges compensation for the family of the child Xiao Yuan killed and takes away her knives to prevent another incident 45.

The Butterfly Dreamed of Zhuang Zhou

Yang Jian subsequently experiences an apparently ordinary school life, but cold test papers, a newspaper concealing his father’s face in every photograph, and distorted time expose its inconsistencies. He realizes he is still dreaming and recalls being attacked in the car after leaving the village 46 47 48.

An anomaly carrying Yang Xiao’s memories explains that a black dog possesses part of the dream’s power. Yang Jian rejects the anomaly’s old plan and devises his own: exploit the overlap between dream and reality to draw the ghost’s dismembered parts into the dream for the dog to consume 49.

He tears away the false father’s newspaper and survives the dog’s initial attack long enough for it to recognize and attack the ghost. The ghost dies within the dream, but Yang Jian does not wake. He then watches reality through falling rain as the Yang Xiao anomaly retrieves a wooden box and uses mirrors to make an approaching ghost disappear 50.
