Background / History

Childhood and Martial Soul Awakening

Yu Xiaogang is the younger twin brother of Yu Xuan and a son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. At four, he writes a tribute titled My Titled Douluo Father. The elders cite the essay as evidence of his intelligence and expect exceptional talent from him at the awakening ceremony 1.

At six, Xiaogang initially appears to awaken the rare Golden Sacred Dragon. The phantom instead shatters, injuring him, and leaves behind Luo Sanpao—a purple, pig-like creature. His Innate Soul Power measures only level 0.5. The elders immediately replace their praise with criticism, while his father reacts with disappointment 1 2.

Yu Xuan subsequently awakens the Fire Dragon King. Xiaogang, who had hoped his twin would share his misfortune, becomes resentful. Flames from Yu Xuan's awakening ignite his clothes; Yu Luohe hastily removes them, inadvertently leaving him naked. Overwhelmed by the spectators' laughter, Xiaogang flees the hall. Yu Jue and Yu Cheng find him by the river, dress him, and return him home 2 3.

Training and Growing Resentment

Xiaogang recommends a Wind Eagle Soul Ring to Yu Xuan, arguing that wind should expand the reach of fire. Yu Xuan rejects the advice and instead obtains a Tail Blade Flame Dragon ring. Seeing his brother's thousand-year First Soul Ring shocks Xiaogang, whose knowledge of clan records tells him the normal first-ring limit is 423 years 3 8.

After Yu Xuan suggests that an external Martial Soul might grow stronger through exercise, Xiaogang begins riding Luo Sanpao. He hopes that slimming the creature down could turn it back into a dragon. Yu Xuan privately considers the idea useless 4 8.

Under pressure from his father, Xiaogang joins Yu Luowu's two-month combat course. He struggles with basic punches and kicks, while Luo Sanpao successfully imitates the techniques. The contrast draws ridicule from his classmates and leads Xiaogang to blame both his brother and his own Martial Soul for supposedly stealing his talent 8 9 10.

Over the following years, his resentment grows alongside Yu Xuan's achievements. Yu Yuanzhen assigns Dao Ba and another burly clansman to supervise Xiaogang's cultivation, authorizing punishment if he refuses to train 12 14 18.

First Soul Ring

Upon reaching level ten, Xiaogang asks his father to take him hunting and demands a thousand-year First Soul Ring like Yu Xuan's. Yu Yuanzhen refuses, warning that Xiaogang's body cannot withstand it, but permits him to obtain a ring with escorts 18 19.

Dao Ba and Brother Hu accompany him into the Star Dou Great Forest. Xiaogang insists on considering rings beyond his physical limits, including a six-hundred-year Thunder Carp Dragon. His escorts deliberately kill unsuitable beasts themselves, preventing him from absorbing their rings 19 20.

After six or seven days, Xiaogang abandons his higher requirements because he wants to return home. He chooses a 340-year Flame Stink Bug, reasoning that it might strengthen Luo Sanpao's foul-smelling attacks. Absorption takes eight hours and leaves him unconscious from blood loss. He wakes two days after returning to the clan and discovers his first Soul Skill 20.

Duel and Departure

Xiaogang later challenges a six-year-old disciple who has only just awakened his Martial Soul. Luo Sanpao's hot, poisonous blast burns the child, but the opponent pushes through it, bypasses Luo Sanpao, and beats Xiaogang with his Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon-enhanced strength. The watching disciples mock Xiaogang's defeat 25.

When Yu Xuan prepares to attend Spirit Hall Academy, Xiaogang asks to enroll as well, hoping its books might contain a remedy for low Innate Soul Power. His father refuses, citing his level, poor discipline, and vulnerability to mistreatment outside the clan 26.

Determined to prove his father wrong, Xiaogang packs his belongings into a Soul Tool and leaves a note promising to return after making a name for himself 26.

Personality

Xiaogang takes pride in his intelligence and his position as the clan leader's son. Before awakening, he assumes that his parentage guarantees superior talent, shoves another child aside in line, and delays his own turn because “the real main character” should appear later 1.

His failed awakening does not erase his belief that he deserves distinction. He interprets Yu Xuan's success as an injustice, imagines that his brother stole his destined life, and later blames Luo Sanpao for taking his intelligence. Even praise directed at Yu Xuan during routine training provokes jealousy 9 10 12.

He is sensitive to criticism but readily orders around those assigned to serve him. He retreats when confronted by his father or supervisors, yet continues to demand treatment comparable to Yu Xuan's. His decision to leave the clan is driven by a desire to vindicate himself and return in glory 18 19 20 26.
