Even after finding strong evidence that Mr. Stars is another transmigrator, Klein refuses to reveal his own origin until he can better judge the powerful figure’s character and intentions 8 44 45.

His caution does not override his conscience. He protects Leon’s secrets after being rescued, refuses to abandon Old Neil despite the danger of corruption, and later rejects an opportunity to trade information that could expose Leon. Before Leon leaves for Backlund, Klein ultimately warns him about Qilingus despite worrying that the warning could compromise the Tarot Club 12 19 44 50.

He is frugal but fond of good food, especially sweet iced tea and pastries. He feels guilty about an unnecessary carriage detour even though Leon pays, and worries about replacing a damaged suit that costs half a month’s wages. Background / History

Arrival and Nighthawk Work

Klein came to this world from Earth. By the time Leon receives Cecimir’s note, Klein reflects that he has been in the new world for less than a month. He had joined the Nighthawks roughly half a month before his early conversations with Leon 8 29.

He first encounters Leon as an officer investigating the aftermath of the Erdtree Church sacrifice. Although his divination supports Leon’s apparent innocence, Klein recommends an additional check by Dunn. He later reassures Leon about joining the Nighthawks and shares practical advice about working under their forgetful captain 2 3 8.

The Clown Attack and Leon’s Secret

While guarding Chanis Gate, Klein and Leon confront a sealed rag doll that pushes through the door. Klein checks the paper it drops through divination, then raises the alarm—only to hear Rozanne scream upstairs 9.

During the ensuing attack, Klein wounds the Secret Order’s Clown with Leon’s guidance. When the enemy returns for a surprise attack, Leon saves Klein and kills the assailant. Klein fires additional shots into the corpse and supports a misleading account of their victory to prevent Leon’s extraordinary strength from attracting an intrusive Church investigation 11 12.

Dunn rewards Klein’s performance by applying for his appointment as a full Nighthawk, with a salary increase to six pounds a week. Klein subsequently asks Leon to investigate houses matching a drawing of a distinctive red chimney, establishing a more deliberate partnership between them 12 15 16.

Roundtable Hold and the Search for Home

After a Tarot Club meeting, Klein and Audrey are unexpectedly summoned to Roundtable Hold. Its host explains that the Greater Grace has made them Tarnished and offers them the choice to leave with their memories erased. Both remain, and Klein adopts the codename Sailor 5 6.

The host’s admission that he comes from another world gives Klein renewed hope of returning home. However, Klein does not know that Mr. Stars is his colleague Leon. He keeps his own origins secret and requests a ritual contact method so future summons will not expose the gathering 6 43 44.

Saving Old Neil

After learning more about the Hidden Sage, Klein suspects that Old Neil’s mysterious eyes indicate corruption. He and Leon investigate privately, fearing that an immediate report could lead the Holy Cathedral to eliminate their teacher 18 19.

Klein assists with spiritual examination and Dream Divination, then leaves to fetch Dunn while Leon treats Old Neil. Cecimir later confirms that Old Neil is free of corruption and arranges his retirement under Church care. The successful rescue helps Klein fully master his Seer Potion by teaching him that a favorable divination does not replace action 22 23 27 30.

Azik and the Desire to Advance

After collapsing from exposure to Leon and Azik’s auras, Klein wakes at Azik’s home. He learns that Azik’s unusual abilities may be connected to his lost memories and that both his own fate and Leon’s appear discordant 31.

Klein provides a Wall of Spirituality while Leon attempts to awaken Azik’s memories. When the attempt triggers an uncontrolled release of power, Klein struggles to reinforce the barrier despite being unable to intervene directly. Afterward, he accepts Azik’s Copper Whistle from Leon and resolves to seek promotion to Clown 33 34 35.

Madam Sharon and Qilingus

Klein’s investigation of Maynard’s death reveals an affair with Madam Sharon. Although his divination finds no supernatural influence on the death, he and Leon warn Inspector Tolle that Sharon may be a Beyonder 40 41 47.

At Roundtable Hold, Klein probes Mr. Stars with a deliberately imperfect copy of Roselle’s Chinese diary. Mr. Stars reads it and asks about Earth in Mandarin; Klein conceals his recognition. The meeting also gives him confirmation that Sequence 7 of his pathway is called Magician 44 45 46.

When Leon announces a trip to Backlund, Klein struggles over whether to disclose intelligence obtained through the Tarot Club. He ultimately warns him that Qilingus is in the city and possesses a dangerous Shepherd-related Mystical Item, emphasizing that the warning is meant to protect Leon—not commission an assassination 49 50.
