Background / History
Amnesia and university life
Before joining Backlund University’s history department, Azik lost most of his memories. He retained his name and basic common knowledge, while an identity document helped him maintain an ordinary life. Investigating that document yielded no clues to his past, even with his ability to glimpse fate 32.
Azik discovered his supernatural abilities during his university years but avoided investigating them deeply. He valued his peaceful life and feared that exploring his power would expose him to danger or disrupt what he had built 32.
Meeting Leon
Azik had previously seen Leon Kaspar at a noblewoman’s salon, where the hostess introduced Leon as a famous detective. Leon did not remember him, but Azik recognized him when they met again 31.
Their encounter in the Evil Dragon Bar’s underground market caused Leon’s Rune of Death to activate spontaneously. The interaction between their auras overwhelmed Klein’s spiritual perception and rendered him unconscious. Azik and Leon carried Klein to Azik’s home 30 31.
There, Azik identified discordance in Leon’s fate, resembling what he had previously observed in Klein’s. He disclosed his amnesia and asked both men to watch for clues about his origins. Believing Leon’s unusual power and fragmented memories resembled his own condition, he treated Leon as someone who shared his predicament 31 32.
Awakening and its aftermath
Azik accepted Leon’s offer to awaken his dormant abilities. Exposure to Destined Death first restored fleeting impressions of a castle and family; a subsequent attack provoked a much greater response. Undead emerged to defend him, and the sudden return of power overwhelmed his consciousness 32 33.
Leon contained the escalating reaction within Klein’s Wall of Spirituality before using the Law of Regression to end it. After recovering, Azik apologized and offered to pay for any damage. Leon warned him against attempting further memory recovery without someone capable of stopping another uncontrolled awakening 33 34.
Azik announced that he would leave Tingen to verify the memories he had recovered. As thanks, he gave Leon an ancient Copper Whistle capable of summoning his personal messenger 34.
Appearance
Azik appears as a middle-aged man of average build 31.
Personality
Azik is gentle, composed, and considerate. He handles Leon’s failure to recognize him without embarrassment and welcomes Klein with his favorite Xibo Black Tea. Klein regards him as steady and dependable 31 35.
His attachment to ordinary life conflicts with his longing to recover his identity. He openly admits fearing danger and death, yet the prospect of remembering his family persuades him to undergo Leon’s risky awakening experiment. Afterward, he expresses gratitude rather than blaming Leon for the incident 32 33 34.
Abilities & Skills
Perception of Fate
Azik can glimpse aspects of fate through an ability he loosely describes as divination 31 32.
- Detects discordance in both Klein’s and Leon’s fates 31.
- Acknowledges that “divination” is an excuse rather than an exact explanation of his ability 31.
- Cannot identify the hidden manipulator behind the disturbances or use his perception to recover his own history 32 35.
Death-Related Power
Azik’s dormant power resonates with Leon’s Destined Death, though Azik does not wield Destined Death himself 30 31 33.
- Produces a pale aura that grows stronger during his awakening 33.
- Reacts strongly enough to Leon’s power to affect a nearby Seer despite both men attempting to restrain their auras 31.
- May have altered the lingering effects of Destined Death within Leon’s body; Leon considers this an explanation, not a confirmed fact 37.
Undead Summoning and Automatic Defense
When threatened during the awakening experiment, Azik manifests an illusory door formed amid pale mist and distorted faces. Numerous undead emerge to intercept Leon’s attack 33.
- Undead replace fallen defenders until Leon’s initial strike is exhausted 33.
- Continue protecting Azik and attacking Leon after Azik loses consciousness 33.
- His uncontrolled counterattack surpasses some weaker demigods of the Lands Between, according to Leon’s assessment 33.
- His conscious control remains limited; Leon believes the displayed power is only a fraction of Azik’s former peak 35.
Equipment / Items
- Identity document — Remained with Azik after his memory loss. Attempts to trace his past through it were unsuccessful 32.
- Ancient Copper Whistle — A patterned whistle that Azik possessed when he awoke in Backlund. Blowing it summons his personal messenger, which he describes as no weaker than a Sequence 8. He gives it to Leon, who subsequently passes it to Klein 34 35.
Relationships
- Klein Moretti — Friend and recipient of Azik’s observations about the irregularities in his fate. Klein helps isolate the awakening experiment, checks Azik afterward, and eventually receives his Copper Whistle from Leon 31 32 34 35.
- Leon Kaspar — Initially an acquaintance remembered from a salon, later a friend whom Azik believes shares his condition. Leon helps restore some memories but must suppress the resulting uncontrolled power 31 32 33 34.
- Family — Forgotten relatives who appear in fragmentary memories awakened by Destined Death. Their identities and circumstances remain unknown 33.
- Personal messenger — A supernatural messenger belonging exclusively to Azik, summonable through his Copper Whistle 34.
