| Tarnished of the Lands Between | 5 37 | Before the main story, traveled across the Lands Between and completed the journey that other Tarnished had failed to finish. |
| Divine ruler / Lord of the Stars | 3 5 37 | Repaired the broken Elden Ring, incorporated the Rune of Death into it, and ascended the throne. His godhood predates his arrival in Tingen. |
| Sequence 9: Tarnished — local vessel | 4 7 30 | Arrived in a body capable of wielding only a small fraction of his original power. Killing supernatural beings restored some strength through Rune absorption. He later realized that his previous achievements had fulfilled the Tarnished acting requirements from the moment of arrival. |
| Access to his true body at Roundtable Hold | 4 5 | Ranni’s intervention brought his original body to the Hold, where he again felt abundant power. This restored access did not remove his local vessel’s limitations. |
- Local combat benchmark: Leon estimated his available strength as comparable to a combat-oriented Sequence 8, excluding his fighting skills. This was a strength comparison, not a documented promotion 10.
- Later advancement: No promotion beyond Sequence 9 is documented in the provided chapters. The Sequence 7 and Sequence 6 Runes he creates are converted Beyonder Characteristics, not his own attained Sequences 17 37.
Background / History
Earth and the Lands Between
Li Ang originally came from Earth, where he had been a corporate worker. In the Lands Between, he traveled as a Tarnished, repaired the Elden Ring, and restored the Rune of Death to it. He regarded himself as the hero who had saved that world 2 16 37.
He formed a union with Ranni, represented by the Dark Moon Ring and Dark Moon Greatsword. By the time he entered the current world, he had also visited other worlds and killed gods 2 4 25.
Arrival in Leon Kaspar’s Body
Leon followed an aura associated with Earth and answered faith directed toward him in another world. He arrived in the body of Leon Kaspar, a detective whose memories he could examine, but found himself unable to return to the stars 1 2 7.
The original detective was the last surviving member of a secretive family that had possessed Apprentice and Reader Pathway Potions. After his parents were murdered in Backlund, he fled to Tingen with Martha and pursued revenge. He joined the Erdtree Church approximately half a month before Li Ang’s arrival and became willing to sacrifice his life for an unconventional Pathway—circumstances Li Ang considered suspiciously convenient 1 4 7 50.
Questioned in hospital by Klein Moretti and Dunn Smith, Leon concealed his identity behind his predecessor’s incomplete memories. When Dunn entered his dream, Leon overwhelmed him, extracted information about Roselle Gustav, and implanted a harmless account of the interrogation. Ranni briefly contacted him during the encounter, but other powerful wills began trying to locate him 2 3.
Joining the Nighthawks
Leon initially intended to flee Tingen. Ranni’s warning, the appearance of new Tarnished at Roundtable Hold, and evidence of wider interference persuaded him to seek protection and information through the Nighthawks instead. He signed a five-year contract with Dunn 4 7 8.
During the attack on the Nighthawk base, he identified the fiery cue preceding the Secret Order attacker’s movements and saved Klein from a close-range fireball. Meanwhile, the Mimic Tear he had left with Martha defended his home against an Aurora Order intruder. The residence was badly damaged, leading Leon to rent temporary accommodation near the Morettis 10 11 12 14.
Ince Zangwill’s attempt to write Leon’s death into his plans was disrupted by a powerful force. Leon subsequently established a cautious partnership with Klein, recognizing that both of them possessed secrets and reasons to investigate Tingen’s apparent coincidences 14 16.
Old Neil’s Corruption
Leon noticed unnatural eyes behind Old Neil during an occultism lesson. When he and Klein later visited Neil’s house, they discovered that he was using a seed to resurrect Celeste, unaware of the Scarlet Rot taking root in his heart 17 20 22.
A Preserving Bolus suppressed the rot without removing its source. Leon then used Miquella’s Needle to extract the corruption, healed Neil’s wounds, and revived a feminine piano spirit that restored Neil’s damaged spirit before merging into him 22 24.
Rather than disclose everything he knew, Leon presented the incident as deliberate corruption and encouraged the Church to investigate. His report concealed the Hidden Sage and Scarlet Rot, using the authorities to expose the factions operating in Tingen 24 25.
The Goddess’s Offer
Crestet Cecimir privately gave Leon the Church’s records on the Erdtree Church and conveyed the Evernight Goddess’s request that he recover his strength discreetly. The Goddess hoped for his assistance afterward, but explicitly allowed him to refuse 28.
Leon distrusted the apparently unconditional support until a specific request was stated. A private note bearing the English word “Hometown” then shook him enough to briefly release a terrifying aura. Cecimir departed before Leon could question him 28 29.
Azik’s Awakening and Its Cost
After meeting Azik Eggers, Leon offered to awaken his dormant death-related power. His motives included curiosity about Azik’s connection to the Rune of Death and an opportunity to test the Great Rune in the new world 31 32 33.
The experiment exceeded his expectations. Azik lost consciousness, summoned undead, and instinctively retaliated with increasing power. Leon contained the confrontation to prevent a disaster in Tingen, drawing on more Destined Death than his vessel could safely withstand 33 34.
Afterward, Black Flame began erupting involuntarily from Leon’s body. He described the condition as being corrupted by his own power and concealed it from Klein 36 37 38.
Madam Sharon and Backlund
While investigating Councilor Maynard’s death, Leon stopped the corpse from attacking Klein and recognized Madam Sharon from the resulting spirit-channeling portrait. His predecessor had previously attempted to buy a Potion formula from her, only for the failed transaction to nearly land him in prison 40 41.
When Sharon later threatened him, Leon restrained her and announced that she had agreed to surrender to the police. He prepared a report suggesting that she might be a Beyonder who had lost control 48 49.
Leon then left for Backlund under the pretext of a private commission. His actual interests were information supplied by Miss Spectator and traces of the Frenzied Flame in the sewers—not revenge for his predecessor’s parents. He entrusted Martha’s care and his house key to Klein before seeking Kaspars at Bravehearts Bar 50.
Appearance
Leon's local body is an exceptionally handsome young man who appears to be in his early twenties 7.
- Hair and eyes: Medium-length black hair and black eyes 7.
- Usual clothing: Dark brown double-breasted wool coat, white shirt, dark gray trousers, black ankle boots, and a silk half-top hat 7.
- Alternate investigative outfit: Black caped overcoat and dark brown deerstalker 20.
- Divine manifestations: Intricate concentric runes appear across his body when the Elden Ring is revealed; at Roundtable Hold, starlight and flowing laws surround him 3 5.
- After overexertion: His complexion becomes noticeably dark, while Black Flame intermittently threatens to emerge beneath his skin 36 38.
Personality
Leon is irreverent, confident, and impatient with cryptic speech and hidden manipulation. Although he claims to dislike elaborate scheming, he readily alters memories, withholds information, and directs official investigations toward his own objectives. He is particularly suspicious of coincidences and favors that appear to demand nothing in return 3 7 24 28 35.
His curiosity frequently overrides caution. He enjoys testing unfamiliar abilities and investigating powerful beings, sometimes underestimating the consequences. Klein privately compares him to an energetic, troublemaking beagle after their repeated dangerous encounters 10 32 33 36.
Despite his ruthless thoughts and disdain for fanatics, Leon does not want innocent people slaughtered. He saves Klein because he cannot watch a colleague die, risks his vessel to contain Azik’s power, and apologizes when his misjudgment causes Klein financial loss 1 2 16 33 36.
He values reliable companions who can keep secrets. His partnership with Klein develops through mutual discretion rather than complete disclosure, and his generosity includes meals, equipment, and practical help 14 16 35 36.
Abilities & Skills
Elden Ring and Rune Sculpting
Leon uses the Elden Ring to hold and reshape supernatural power 17 37.
- Stores Beyonder Characteristics rather than immediately absorbing them 17.
- Converts Characteristics through the Greater Grace into Runes, including a Sequence 7 Magician’s Rune and Sequence 6 Spirit Guide’s Rune 17 37.
- These Runes can briefly grant the corresponding abilities through the Tarnished Pathway or serve as Potion main ingredients 17 37.
- Low-Sequence authority remains incomplete and cannot be permanently appropriated in this way. Leon theorizes that taking a god’s larger share of authority could overcome that limitation; this remains a hypothesis 17.
Tarnished Pathway
The Sequence 9 Tarnished ability turns defeated supernatural life into a source of growth 4.
- Killing creatures with supernatural properties allows Leon to convert a portion of them into Runes that permanently strengthen him 4.
- Conversion is limited: even killing an Oracle produced little noticeable improvement 4.
- His prior completion of the Tarnished journey fulfilled the Sequence’s acting requirements upon arrival 30.
Destined Death / Black Flame
Leon wields the Rune of Death as black and blood-red flame: a law capable of killing gods 32 33.
- Forms sword-like attacks, projected slashes, and a defensive curtain of death 33.
- Permanently stops Maynard’s reanimated corpse with a black spark 40.
- Draws out a response from Azik’s dormant death-related power 32 33.
- His local body cannot safely sustain unrestricted use; overexertion causes pain, bodily strain, and uncontrolled Black Flame 34 36 38.
- Although he has mastered the law, his Destined Death is not entirely complete: a remaining sliver belongs to someone he avoids naming 37.
Dream Control and Mental Influence
Leon remains aware during Dunn’s dream intrusion and reverses the interrogation 2 3.
- Revealing his divine laws overwhelms Dunn’s mind and prevents him from controlling his actions 3.
- Uses an invisible force to move Dunn and compels him to answer questions 3.
- Draws Trina’s water-lily symbol while implanting a replacement account of the dream 3.
- Deliberately restrains his divine manifestation to keep Dunn from dying upon witnessing it 3.
Healing and Spiritual Perception
Leon can recognize supernatural corruption and intervene in spiritual injuries 1 17 24.
- Closes a dagger wound within seconds after entering his host body 1.
- Detects the unnatural eyes behind Old Neil and recognizes the presence associated with Scarlet Rot 17 24.
- Heals Neil’s wounds and revives the piano spirit involved in repairing his damaged spirit 24.
- Senses traces of Gray Fog, divinity in a sacred sword, and multiple spirits within Crestet Cecimir 25 27 28.
- Retains clear vision in the supernatural darkness surrounding Cecimir’s sword 28.
Combat and Ritual Knowledge
Leon combines extensive combat experience with knowledge acquired from his host and the Nighthawks 10 17.
- Identifies the pattern behind the Secret Order attacker’s flame-based movement and alerts Klein to it 10 11.
- Uses his inherited cane to force an animated rag doll back through Chanis Gate 9.
- Performs a ritual to contact Ranni and teaches a separate contact ritual using the Elden Ring symbol, four candles, and an offering 4 6.
- Learns local procedural mysticism and can raise a Wall of Spirituality 16 39 40.
- Considers using the Law of Regression during Azik’s rampage; the supplied passage does not establish a successful casting 34.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dark Moon Ring and Dark Moon Greatsword — Symbols of his union with Ranni, used as ritual links to contact her 4.
- Inherited cane — A family supernatural item tipped with a dark red gemstone. Leon initially discovers no property beyond exceptional hardness 7 9.
- Storage bag — Holds weapons, ritual objects, records, and other supplies 4 29 42.
- Spirit Calling Bell and Mimic Tear — Left with Martha for emergencies. Leon estimates the Mimic Tear at roughly 3.3 times his local body’s strength; it reproduces his fighting skills without his vessel’s restrictions 10.
- Preserving Bolus — Suppresses Old Neil’s Scarlet Rot but cannot remove the seed in his heart 22.
- Miquella’s Needle — Perfected by Leon to repel Outer Deities’ interference; used to remove Neil’s corruption, then handed to Dunn with the bud as evidence 23 24.
- Copper Whistle — A gift intended for Leon and Klein, which Leon gives to Klein because he considers it more useful in his hands 35.
Relationships
- Ranni — His partner from the Lands Between. She calls him “my dear king,” warns him about other gods, and enables his true body’s appearance at Roundtable Hold 3 4 5.
- Klein Moretti / Sailor — Colleague, temporary neighbor, and cautious ally; also a member of Leon’s gathering. Leon repeatedly protects him while respecting the secrets he declines to reveal 6 11 14 16.
- Audrey / Spectator — Roundtable Hold participant and information source. Leon rewards her reports, offers to seek a Spectator formula, and asks her to test her Tarnished identity 6 44 46.
- Dunn Smith — Nighthawk captain and employer. Their relationship begins with Leon secretly overpowering his dream interrogation, then develops into an official working arrangement 3 8 17.
- Martha Adeline — The original detective’s longtime attendant. Leon arranges supernatural protection for her and entrusts her care to Klein during his absence 4 10 12 50.
- Old Neil — Occultism instructor and colleague whom Leon saves from Scarlet Rot and spiritual damage 17 22 24.
- Azik Eggers — A powerful acquaintance whose missing memories and dormant abilities attract Leon’s curiosity. Their awakening experiment becomes a dangerous confrontation 32 33 34.
- Evernight Goddess — Offers concealment and institutional support while requesting possible future assistance. Leon remains wary of her motives 3 28.
- Leonard — Fellow Nighthawk who calls Leon the same kind of person as himself. Leon suspects that Leonard has a hidden source of support 8 16.
- Madam Sharon — An adversarial contact inherited from his predecessor’s dealings. Leon suspects she is a Beyonder and forcibly places her in police custody after she threatens him 41 48.
