Background / History

Isaac remembers nothing before the age of twelve. His earliest memory is waking in a Palmer clinic with Edward Lessing beside him. A nurse told him that Edward had found him unconscious and brought him for treatment. The clinic could establish neither his identity nor the cause of his amnesia. After his discharge, Edward took him to city hall, registered him as Isaac, and adopted him 56.

Edward provided private lessons and several years of combat training. His teaching included perspectives on history that differed from official Blackthorn Church accounts, particularly concerning the empire’s court wizards. He also left Isaac a revolver, holy silver ammunition, a letter opener, and books 5 6 25 102.

Edward never explained Isaac’s origins. After his death, Isaac searched the study for a letter or other explanation but found nothing. Initially content to leave those years forgotten, Isaac later began reconsidering them after others noticed his unexplained familiarity with etiquette 56 57.

After graduating from university, Isaac had neither employment nor a secure residence. His prospective landlord gave the room to a wealthier tenant, leaving him carrying his belongings through Palmer. News of the Palmer Bank robbery then brought him to the bank, where he learned that his safe-deposit box had been robbed and met Carlo Schuster 2 3.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Black hair and deep blue eyes 6.
  • Features: Handsome, though not rugged-looking; the Boot Gang’s contact describes him as a “pretty boy” 6 116.
  • Bearing: Displays habits of etiquette that Edward never deliberately taught him. Both his university mentor and Harper notice his refined manners, but noble ancestry remains unconfirmed 55 56.
  • Usual working clothes: A practical gentleman’s hunting suit, complemented by a tie, newsboy cap, concealed shoulder holster, and ebony sword-cane 53 55 56.
  • Disguises: Uses a burlap hood for the black market and villa raid, work clothes in Deer Lane, and a fake beard, overcoat, and bowler hat for the nursing-home investigation 78 82 115 130.

Personality

Isaac is observant and analytical, preferring to understand an opponent or situation before acting. At Amorton Manor, he notices that the wraith appears expectant rather than hostile and resolves the encounter through a funeral rite instead of shooting it. He also studies newspaper wording, a shopkeeper’s behavior, and inconsistencies in the Ghoul Cult’s treatment of him 6 9 10 43 124 125.

His caution does not prevent decisions. He agrees to judge Carlo’s explanation of All Checks for himself and accept responsibility for that judgment. Later, he refuses Halperin’s request for death because the arrangement appears to benefit both cult factions while leaving him with the risk 13 125.

He is considerate in ordinary interactions. After learning that Grayson is shy, Isaac avoids accompanying him on further inquiries so that he will not have to manage an unnecessary social obligation. He also retains his principles when accepting Vilka’s gifts, promising consideration rather than unconditional support 56 74.

Isaac does not consider himself easily angered and prefers firearms or his sword-cane to barehanded confrontation. Nevertheless, he can respond forcefully when threatened, defeating the Boot Gang after its members attempt to seize the ring 74 116 117.

Abilities & Skills

Combat Training

Edward trained Isaac in physical combat and shooting before he joined Carlo 5.

  • Firearms: Handles reinforced anti-aberrant ammunition despite its severe recoil, which can break an untrained shooter’s arm 25.
  • Close combat: Uses wrist locks, redirection, evasive footwork, elbow strikes, and controlled cane blows against multiple attackers 116 117.
  • Swordsmanship: Disables a Shroud-Wrapped Walking Corpse by targeting gaps in its protective wrappings and severing both arms 84.
  • Adaptation: Switches tactics when thrusting attacks fail against the corpse’s treated shroud 84.

Investigation and Social Observation

Isaac shows deductive ability before receiving professional investigative instruction 6 9.

  • Identifies James Fenn’s staged haunting through names and room numbers glimpsed in the inn register 6.
  • Recognizes that Vilka’s excessive carriage fare is a deliberate approach rather than an ordinary passenger payment 30.
  • Builds a behavioral profile of Harper and uses a suitable conversational pretext to draw out information 43 44 45.
  • Detects a follower’s repeated passes outside a café and helps lure him inside 111.
  • Identifies the real cult contact among the Boot Gang by observing who repeatedly pushes the conversation toward violence 117.

His methods remain inexperienced: he explicitly lacks tracking training and learns from Grayson’s more detailed, consistency-checking interview technique 55 56.

Spirit Vision and Spiritual Sensitivity

Spirit Vision temporarily replaces Isaac’s physical sight with spiritual perception 46.

  • Reveals spiritual outlines and the gray-green mist associated with Harper’s curse 46.
  • Can expose deeper bodily structures with concentration and dice assistance 47.
  • Requires him to close his eyes; he has not demonstrated mastery of Double Vision, which would allow simultaneous ordinary and spiritual sight 46.
  • Leaves brief visual afterimages and disorientation when he returns to normal sight 48.
  • His developing spiritual alertness warns him of danger and of being watched, but does not reliably identify an unseen presence through a closed door 121 122 130.

Religious Knowledge and Rituals

Although a nonbeliever, Isaac remembers Golden Bough prayers from Edward’s books 10 13.

  • Performs a prayer of repose and offers a holy silver bullet in place of a consecrated coin, allowing the Amorton Manor wraith to disperse peacefully 10.
  • Conducts the ritual that removes Harper’s contamination 49.
  • Does not hold clerical authority; Vilka explicitly identifies both acts as a nonbeliever acting in Vicania’s name 50.

Check-Assisted Actions

All Checks belongs to Carlo, not Isaac. Isaac’s unbelief allows him to serve as a checker, while his attributes can contribute bonuses 13 84.

  • Summons Fenri through a successful check 18.
  • Persuades a locked door to open through a charm check; a later attempt at the nursing home fails 82 130.
  • Receives temporary night vision, bullet-deflection support, and a successful bullet-dodging check during the villa attack 84.
  • Can receive support without physically rolling dice while inside Carlo’s Check Domain 60 62.

Strong Summoning Contracts

Morris attributes Isaac’s unusually strong summoning contract to his spiritual characteristics 70.

  • Morris’s bone whistle fails twice to take control of the maggot Foul Spirit from him.
  • Isaac must accompany the creature to Bureau storage and sign the containment-transfer documents 70.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Edward’s revolver — Inherited firearm with a worn wooden grip; initially loaded with six patterned holy silver bullets made by the Church of the Golden Bough 5 6.
  • Holy silver ammunition — Effective against evil creatures; Isaac spends one inherited bullet on the wraith’s funeral rite and later obtains newer ammunition through Bureau logistics 6 10 53.
  • Ebony sword-cane — Carlo’s loaned weapon, not a gift. Conceals a specially worked Holy Silver blade behind a release mechanism in its silver top; durable enough to deflect a bullet and repeatedly cut bone 41 84.
  • Letter opener — Inherited from Edward; carried as a small blade and used for practical tasks such as opening a tin and cutting bread 6 121.
  • Shoulder holster — Chosen to conceal his revolver beneath plain clothes 53 56.
  • Leaf-shaped silver brooch — Vilka’s gift; strengthens the Spirit Garment, absorbs contamination, and heats up as a warning. Requires purification and can shatter under accumulated or intense contamination 74.
  • Dark brown leather gloves — Vilka’s gift; resist contamination and many contact-based curses and toxins while preserving touch 74.
  • Anger-powered brass knuckles — Vilka’s gift; typically multiply strength two- to fivefold according to anger. Isaac finds them poorly suited to his temperament and later offers them in a ring trade 74 80.
  • Carlo’s twenty-sided die — A loaned black-crystal die that lets Carlo observe an employee from a third-person perspective while contact is maintained; Isaac carries it during undercover work 119 130.
  • Edward’s books and brass key — Carlo keeps the sought-after books for protection and later gives Isaac Edward’s worn key as a keepsake of the former house at 122 Red Maple Street 11 100.

Relationships

  • Edward Lessing — Adoptive father, teacher, and combat instructor. Found Isaac unconscious at twelve but never explained his origins 5 56.
  • Carlo Schuster — Employer and mentor. Recruits Isaac through a dangerous test, teaches him supernatural investigation, and supplies equipment and check support. Isaac initially distrusts him and objects to being called “Asa” 11 20 41 46.
  • Fenri / Fenriskul — Summoned companion and carriage-puller. Isaac allows the black canine to stay and shortens its original name to Fenri; its precise origins remain unknown to him 18 28 29.
  • Vilka / Cardinal Visteria — An acquaintance of Edward who initially sought his books. Gives Isaac three Wonders as an investment in his future support, without requiring him to violate his principles 30 74.
  • Li Jiehao / Jacob — Fellow employee whom Isaac is assigned to teach about the world. Li recognizes him as the swordsman who dismantled his walking corpse 91 93.
  • Andrew Grayson — Bureau colleague whose professional questioning Isaac studies. Isaac adjusts his behavior after learning that Grayson’s reserve comes from shyness 54 55 56.
  • Harper — First private client. After Isaac removes his curse, Harper provides clothing, a tie, and a cap while maintaining their connection 45 49 55 56.
  • Glen — Ghoul Cult contact targeted through Isaac’s false defection. Isaac challenges his vague promises and attempts to use him against Halperin 118 124 127.
  • Halperin — Confined cult elder, later encountered as a lich. Isaac refuses his unexplained request for death; Halperin subsequently exposes the defection cover and proposes cooperation with the Bureau against cult traitors 125 137 141.

Ghoul Cult Infiltration and Demon Encounter

Isaac poses as a Bureau defector offering the ring in exchange for protection and longevity. He defeats the Boot Gang when its members try to seize it, identifies the actual intermediary, and demands concrete guarantees from Glen 116 117 118.

Placed beside the confined Halperin, Isaac recognizes that the elder’s request for death may be a trap benefiting both Halperin and Glen. He refuses without a convincing explanation and confronts Glen over the attempted manipulation 124 125 127.

Carlo later sends him in disguise to Elias Nursing Home, where Glen and other cult members have died. The encounter with a demon costs Isaac three sanity points. He escapes the arriving Bureau agents with Carlo’s assistance, but the demon continues following him and repeatedly tears apart Halperin’s manifested body when the lich approaches 130 134 137.
