Resistance to Mind Echo 5 After two instances of Liuli’s manipulation, his mind begins repelling her Echo. Qiji intervenes before she can test her full strength.
First solo second-tier beast kill 11 Uses Qiji’s identification of an old leg injury to defeat a Rock-Armored Venomous Scorpion with armor-piercing gunfire.
First successful Flame Fist 44 45 Releases fire-attributed Heart Essence without awakening an Echo, destroying a dummy as tough as a second-tier opponent. Initially cannot reproduce the technique reliably.

Partial Mirror Break 134 Synchronizes his Echo of Existence with the environment, but fails to lock onto Yuejian’s Echo of Existence; the resulting punch has no power.
Expanded flame control 141 Envelops himself and teammates in flames while racing along the seabed during the competition preliminary.
Heart Flow and consecutive Instant Blooms 145 Enters Heart Flow against Lanma and delivers a sustained sequence in which every punch is an Instant Bloom.
Successful Mirror Break 146 Locks onto Lanma’s Echo of Existence and defeats him before he can finish deploying his Armament.

Background

Huomu grew up as the son of Yanyi, a man once regarded as a hero. Before the Fire Thief incident, he and Lanma were close childhood companions; Lanma’s father had served under Yanyi 146.

After Yanyi became the Fire Thief and left the City of Kindling, Huomu inherited the public’s hostility toward his father. Classmates bullied him, adults drove him away, and neighbors blamed him whenever something went missing. Lanma also turned against him, sabotaging his schoolwork, planting stolen goods on him, and joining others in beating him 18 129 146.

Huomu nevertheless wanted to become a hero of the City of Kindling. He believed his father’s crime was unforgivable and felt responsible for making amends, while also wanting to prove that he was his own person rather than a born criminal 20.

Appearance

Huomu has red hair and is depicted growing from a small child into a taller, leaner fifteen-year-old with more defined features 18 33.

  • Red hair is a consistently identified feature, including during Qiji’s comforting head pat after the battle eagle attack 33.
  • Exertion accompanies his fire techniques: his cheeks redden when intensifying his flames, and steam rises from his sweat-soaked body after defeating Lanma 141 146 147.

Personality

Huomu is earnest, accommodating, and eager to be useful. Years of rejection leave him prone to apologizing and seeking approval; he happily treats hauling his teacher’s cargo as weight training because it gives him a way to help. His early people-pleasing behavior stems from his desire to repay what he sees as his father’s debt to the city 19 20 23.

His apparent timidity conceals considerable endurance. He survives prolonged persecution without abandoning his ambition, regains composure under lethal pressure against the venomous scorpion, and continues training despite repeated failures. When discouraged, however, he readily blames his intelligence and aptitude 5 11 44.

Huomu’s protective instincts can override his judgment. He risks his life for children even when doing so could collapse the group’s defenses. After Qiji explains those consequences, Huomu reflects on his recklessness, but his ultimate answer is to become strong enough to protect more people rather than accept helplessness 33 34 44.

His gratitude toward Qiji develops into near-unconditional faith. That trust makes him decisive in emergencies, but also produces awkward displays of admiration, including attempted kneeling, a coordinated class welcome, and enthusiastic wheelchair service 26 42 51 170.

Abilities & Skills

Fire-Attributed Heart Essence

Huomu can release Heart Essence as flame without first awakening an Echo, contradicting the prevailing belief that an Echo is necessary to use extraordinary power 43 45 49.

  • Initially experiences his power as warmth when he wants to protect something 43.
  • Achieves his first breakthrough by coordinating his Heart Essence, muscles, and bones through intense conviction 44.
  • Later extends flames around multiple teammates during underwater travel 141.

Flame Fist / Instant Bloom

Flame Fist is Huomu’s name for the technique Yuejian calls Instant Bloom. It concentrates and releases Heart Essence through a punch, producing flames in Huomu’s case 43 76.

  • His first successful strike destroys a second-tier-equivalent training dummy 45.
  • Early activation depends on a difficult-to-reproduce emotional and physical state 45 46.
  • By his fight with Lanma, he can deliver consecutive Instant Blooms while in Heart Flow 145.
  • He keeps Qiji’s name for the move because changing it without permission would feel disrespectful 76.

Mirror Break

An advanced form of Instant Bloom taught by Yuejian. It requires forced resonance between the attacker’s Echo of Existence, the target’s Echo of Existence, and the environment’s Background Echo 76 134.

  • Huomu first achieves only environmental synchronization, producing a powerless half-completed technique 134.
  • Successfully completes the target lock against Lanma and lands the decisive punch 146.
  • The technique is inherently difficult to activate consistently; even Yuejian cannot guarantee success on every attempt 76.

Firearms and Evasion

Firearms handling was Huomu’s best and most diligently practiced subject at the preparatory institute 11.

  • Uses tactical rolls and sudden changes of direction to evade attacks despite lacking Setsuna’s speed 11.
  • Observes an opponent’s attack rhythm and repeatedly places shots into a vulnerable joint 11.
  • Defeats the injured second-tier venomous scorpion by breaking its leg, concentrating fire into the wound, and emptying his magazine into its eye 11.

Mind Echo Resistance

After Liuli manipulates him twice during the rooftop incident, Huomu adapts sufficiently for his mind to repel further intrusion 5.

  • The resistance surprises Liuli because of his F-grade aptitude 5.
  • Its upper limit remains untested: Qiji stops Liuli as she prepares to use her full strength 5 6.

Equipment

  • Firearm and specially made armor-piercing ammunition — Used to defeat the Rock-Armored Venomous Scorpion during the practical assessment 11.

Relationships

  • Qiji — Friend, rescuer, mentor, and personal ideal. His defense of Huomu and guidance in Flame Fist become central to Huomu’s confidence and ambition to fight beside him 5 27 43 45.
  • Yanyi — Father and the Fire Thief. Huomu condemns his crime but remembers him as an affectionate parent who carried him through night markets and bought him food 20 33.
  • Yuejian / Teacher Tsukimi — Teacher and Yanyi’s junior brother. Initially takes advantage of Huomu’s helpfulness, but later teaches him Mirror Break and seriously prepares him for the Tide Grand Competition 23 76 134.
  • Setsuna — Classmate, training companion, and teammate. She angrily challenges his self-sacrificing recklessness, and he eventually understands that her anger comes from concern for everyone’s survival 33 34 41.
  • Lanma — Former childhood friend turned bully. Huomu rejects his claim that the abuse was protective friendship and defeats him in the competition 146.
  • Liuli / Kamishiro Ruri — Initially manipulates his emotions and drives him toward suicide. Later belongs to the same circle of friends and cooperates with him during the competition preliminary 4 5 6 72 141.
  • Bai Lili — Classmate and teammate. She congratulates his victory over Lanma; he later wants to defend her after learning her engagement to Suyo has ended 147 174.

Story Role / Major Arcs

False Accusation and Rooftop Rescue

Huomu is accused of stealing an Echo Crystal after discovering the destroyed testing instrument alone. His poverty, F-grade result, and father’s reputation make him an immediate target, while Liuli secretly amplifies the crowd’s hostility 3.

Qiji challenges the baseless accusations, interrupts Huomu’s suicidal impulse, and catches him when Liuli forces him to jump. Huomu promises not to attempt suicide again, then develops resistance to her renewed manipulation 4 5.

Practical Assessment and Class Recognition

  • Defeats a second-tier scorpion with Qiji’s tactical guidance, earning an A and placing in the top ten across two classes 11 16.
  • Risks his life protecting children during the monthly mission and suffers a chest wound that narrowly misses his heart 33.
  • Gradually earns Class Eight’s recognition through his actions; classmates stop calling him the “son of a sinner” 51.

Training and the Stolen Flame

Huomu seeks Qiji’s instruction after recognizing his lack of strength. Qiji directs him toward the heat within his Heart Essence, leading to his first Flame Fist. Yuejian subsequently teaches him Mirror Break 42 43 44 45 76.

During a later examination, a page from Yuejian’s moonlight scroll burns against Huomu’s lower abdomen. Yuejian realizes that the stolen flame has remained in the City of Kindling all along, then tells Huomu that he may never awaken an Echo 134 135.

Tide Grand Competition

  • Helps transport Qiji and other teammates through the underwater preliminary 141.
  • Defeats Lanma with consecutive Instant Blooms and a finishing Mirror Break, publicly overcoming the childhood bully who once posed as his friend 145 146.
  • Receives his teammates’ congratulations and a fist bump from Qiji; the victory represents his escape from the helplessness of his childhood 146 147.
  • Remains with Qiji’s team through its victory over Sibel’s team and rushes to welcome Qiji back afterward 170.

Original Story

  • Huomu is the original story’s protagonist; Qiji uses his knowledge of that story to intervene in Huomu’s development and take over important mentoring scenes 20 42 43.
  • In that version, Huomu kills Kamishiro Seigen with two or three punches 13.
  • His original-story Flame Fist allows him to fight for days and nights, becoming more energetic as he continues 49.
  • His original fight with Lanma is much closer and includes an emotional breakdown, unlike his more decisive victory under the changed circumstances 147.

Notable Quotes

“But... even if I don't have power, there are still people I want to protect! Isn't it only natural for adults to protect children?!” 33

“Best friend? Don't insult that word!” 146

Trivia

  • Huomu routinely sleeps for several days after extreme training or serious injuries. His longest reported sleep lasted half a month after his father left the city, which explains why he initially accepts Qiji’s prolonged unconsciousness as ordinary sleep 129.
  • He considers someone accepting his dinner invitation a sign that they regard him as a friend, and enthusiastically welcomes Qiji’s advice about discounted cafeteria ramen 16.
