Background / History

Liuli was born into the Kamishiro Family to a mother whom Kamishiro Chiho described as a slave of the lowest station. Despite her exceptional talent, she was denied the “Qing” generation character in her name because of her maternal ancestry 90.

On her fifth birthday, her father chained her to a stone pillar and imposed a binding curse. He called her the family’s “heart” and forbade her from destroying herself, betraying the family, or forgetting her mission. Her outstanding mental talent subsequently made her one of the family’s carefully cultivated tools 9.

Liuli spent years undercover in the City of Kindling, completing earlier assignments to near perfection. Her work directly or indirectly caused many deaths. The prolonged effects of the Age of Gods Curse also weakened her constitution below that of an ordinary girl 8 12 91.

Her older half-brother, Kamishiro Seigen, murdered her mother and mailed Liuli pieces of flesh cut from her body. Although he later promised to remove Liuli’s Curse Binding once he gained power, Liuli regarded that promise with disbelief 12 15.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, misty-purple hair, usually falling smoothly over her shoulders 8 19.
  • Eyes: Misty purple; golden light appears in them when she intensifies her Echo 5 6.
  • Build and complexion: Pale, slender, and curvy, with an outwardly fragile air 6 19.
  • Usual clothing: A white academy uniform 19.
  • Early accessory: Thin-framed glasses that suppress her Echo and support her harmless model-student disguise 4 6.
  • Armament features: Butterfly wings and luminous clothing with tiny butterflies forming and vanishing around the cuffs and hem 92.

Personality

Liuli initially presents herself as a gentle, well-behaved honor student. Her polished smile conceals resentment, emotional numbness, and a longing for death. She is an accomplished liar who can manufacture tears when needed, and her attempt to drive Huomu to suicide exposes the cruelty beneath her public manner 4 5 6 93.

Her treatment by the Kamishiro Family shapes both her despair and her envy of others. Bai Lili’s affectionate parents are particularly painful to her: Liuli initially hates Bai Lili for possessing the happy family life she herself was denied. Even when Liuli protects her classmates from a Void Beast, she privately frames it as revenge against the Kamishiro Family rather than concern for them 32 35.

Time with Qiji and their friends gives her reasons to live. At the amusement park, she discovers a genuine smile she has never seen on her own face before. When Chiho later threatens her life, Liuli realizes that her old claim of welcoming death is no longer true 88 90 91 92.

Her affection for Qiji is possessive, but it also makes her vulnerable. Despite studying romance novels and styling herself as a relationship expert, she becomes flustered by simple physical closeness. Her loyalty can take a dangerous form: she briefly considers killing civilian hostages to spare Qiji from protecting them, though she does not act on the thought 38 73 103.

By the time Qiji awakens from his coma, he recognizes that the woman who hid every feeling behind false smiles and calculated tears has changed substantially 130.

Abilities & Skills

Mind Echo

Liuli’s true lineage specializes in manipulating emotions, suggestion, and implanted thoughts. She conceals it behind butterfly imagery associated with her supposed Insect Lineage 6 32.

  • Emotional manipulation: Intensifies Huomu’s grievance and despair until he loses rational control 4 5.
  • Behavioral control: Drives Huomu toward the rooftop’s edge in a vacant, puppet-like state 5.
  • Combat interference: Disrupts Seigen’s sword attack and briefly immobilizes Chiho, creating openings for Qiji 13 99.
  • Void Beast suppression: Holds an upper second-tier Metal-Rending Battle Eagle at bay while concealing her actual lineage 32.
  • Evacuation support: Uses her Echo to move nearby civilians away from the battle with Chiho 105.
  • Limits: Huomu develops resistance after repeated exposure; Yagami Rina later intercepts her Mind Echo with an ability of the same lineage 5 141.

I See Butterflies

Liuli manifests this Armament after admitting that she wants to survive. Its butterfly wings provide flight, while its enhancement of her Mind Echo allows her to challenge stronger mental control 92.

  • Breaking control: Frees Caixia from Chiho’s fourth-tier Echo despite being a tier below her 92.
  • Aerial support: Carries Qiji above Chiho’s corrosive spider silk 100.
  • Evasion and harassment: Uses flight to support Qiji without engaging Chiho directly; Liuli cannot withstand Chiho head-on 101.
  • Endurance limit: The wings are poorly suited to long-distance flight. Carrying Qiji across the corrosive sea steadily increases her Heart Essence expenditure and exhausts her 140.
  • Sustained cost: Keeping the Armament active throughout the tournament’s first round leaves her needing recovery time 142 143.

True Name: Tool

Liuli deconstructs her Armament’s True Name into Tool, shaping her Heart Essence and imagery into a scabbard for the Sword of No Thought 105.

  • Sword support: Supplies the sheath needed for the sword to unleash its true power 105.
  • Restoration: Reconstitutes Heart Essence and scabbard fragments after their destruction, enabling a second decisive sword technique 107.
  • Observed use: Employed twice in succession during the battle with Chiho; repeated destruction of the True Name is treated as a potential burden 107.

Espionage and Deception

  • Undercover experience: Operates in the City of Kindling for years, with an established record of nearly flawless assignments 12.
  • Emotional acting: Maintains a convincing model-student persona and can deliberately produce tears 6 93.
  • Ability concealment: Disguises Mind Lineage techniques as butterfly-based Insect Lineage abilities 6 32.
  • Romance theory: Studies romance novels and advises Bai Lili on gifts, conversations, and encounters, although her matchmaking efforts backfire 52 53 75.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Echo-suppressing glasses — Thin-framed glasses used as both a disguise and a restraint on her Echo. Their specially made Echo Crystal lenses can withstand a second-tier transcendent’s full-force strike, but Qiji breaks them with a finger flick 4 6 19.
  • Sword of No Thought — A Kamishiro Family Echo Creation left in Liuli’s possession after Seigen’s death. She repeatedly lends it to Qiji and maintains it using her family’s Mind Lineage secret art. Qiji ultimately asks her to keep it rather than transfer it permanently 25 39 132.
  • Two epic Mind Lineage fragments — Given to her by Qiji. She decides to explore the Sea of Consciousness to seek Moonlight Lineage fragments in return 131 132.
  • Battle Support card — Her reward for placing third in the tournament’s first round; she hands it to Qiji 142.

Relationships

  • Qiji — Her rescuer, combat partner, and romantic interest. He interrupts her attack on Huomu, promises protection from the Kamishiro Family, and later calls her his irreplaceable partner. Liuli repeatedly supports him in combat and refuses to abandon him when others consider him a burden 6 9 100 105 140 143.
  • Bai Lili — Initially the target of Liuli’s envy and concealed hatred. Bai Lili’s decision to shield her from a blood arrow unsettles her deeply. They subsequently become close, although Liuli also tries to keep her away from Qiji 35 38 52 53 73.
  • Huomu — Originally an assassination target whom Liuli tries to manipulate into suicide. She later prevents his suicidal charge against a Void Beast and joins him in the group’s social outings and tournament team 4 5 32 72 143.
  • Kamishiro Seigen — Older half-brother, handler, and her mother’s murderer. Liuli betrays him during his battle with Qiji and mutilates his corpse afterward 12 13 15.
  • Kamishiro Chiho — Her aunt and former instructor. Chiho despises Liuli’s ancestry and talent, attempts to kill her, and uses Caixia against her. Liuli helps Qiji defeat her 90 91 92 107.
  • Caixia — A girl previously saved by Qiji. Liuli refuses Chiho’s order to kill her, breaks her mental control, and prevents her from stabbing herself 90 91 92.
  • Xiwang — Qiji’s sister. Her assurance that Qiji considered Liuli worth saving brings Liuli considerable relief 118.
  • Yagami Rina — A fellow Mind Lineage user who identifies herself as Liuli’s distant relative through Kamishiro descendants who defected to Kalentia 141.
