Background / History

Childhood and her brother’s identity

Originally named Shi, Suyo grew close to her older brother after he recovered from an illness that had kept him hospitalized and confined to a wheelchair. He returned home wearing the fox mask she would later inherit 58 86.

When Shi was five, her brother died protecting her. Their parents responded by blaming her survival for the loss of the family’s gifted son; her father feared that without him they could no longer retain their position as the main branch. Shi concluded that her brother’s life had been considered more valuable than her own 58.

She took his bloodstained mask and offered to become him. Although her parents insisted she lacked his talent, they allowed the deception to continue. The family held a funeral for “Shi,” with relatives openly expressing relief that the supposedly less valuable sister had died instead of Suyo 59.

From then on, she lived as Suyo, devoting nearly all her time to training. She repeatedly worked until she collapsed, measuring every obstacle against her conviction that her brother would have overcome it 59.

Appearance

  • Fox mask: Wears her deceased brother’s mask and does not normally reveal her face to outsiders 59 64.
  • Changing mask designs: Mimicry changes the mask to match the power being used, including a penguin for Frost, a cyan lark for Gale, and a red wolf for Flame Dance 55 56.
  • Concealed identity: Deliberately lowers her voice to support her public male identity. Qiji discovers that she is a girl only when her mask breaks 65.
  • Mask restriction: The Thousand Faces Family’s Echo prevents her from voluntarily removing her mask before outsiders, obstructing her attempt to prove her gender to Bai Lili 133.

Personality

Suyo initially presents herself as proud, aloof, and certain of victory. She refuses Qiji’s dinner invitation because she “never dine[s] with losers” and assumes she has placed first in the practical assessment without checking the results. His growing fame makes defeating him an obsession 10 15.

That confidence conceals a fear of being exposed as an inadequate replacement for her brother. She believes that even one defeat could destroy the identity she has built. She cries easily but hides her tears and suppresses her sobs behind her mask—even while training, rejecting Bai Lili, and fighting Qiji 58 64.

Despite her pride, she is tactically pragmatic. Against Qiji, she uses external assistance, gambles on his willingness to wait, and abandons defense when her unstable Armament cannot withstand his attacks. Winning matters more to her than preserving a boast 60 63.

Believing that her brother has returned gives her a source of affection outside the family’s demands. She becomes openly devoted to him and more willing to resist her relatives. After losing to Charles, she neither breaks down nor accepts the butler’s condemnation, instead promising to win next time 81 85 172.

Abilities & Skills

Thousand Faces: Mimicry

Her inherited Echo simulates and substitutes for powers belonging to other lineages. Suyo explicitly distinguishes this from truly possessing those powers 55 59.

Form Applications Distinguishing features
Frost Launches ice blades and icicles; can freeze the battlefield 55 56 64. Penguin mask 55.
Gale Increases movement speed and lightens her body; produces restraining winds 56 63. Cyan lark mask 56.
Flame Dance Uses a paired-fan dance to unleash a wide-area rain of fire 56 57 82. Red wolf mask; crimson fan ribs and flame-lined edges 56.
Earth Creates earthen barriers capable of grounding lightning attacks 63. Its mirror double is surrounded by flowing sand and stones 63.
Water Supports rapid movement across the corrosive sea during the competition 140. Acquired after the period when she knew only four Mimicry types 81 140.
  • Reverse Mimicry: Allows her to absorb fragments from a lineage whose Mimicry she has already mastered. Initially, this restricts her to fire, wind, ice, and earth fragments 81.
  • Heart Essence cost: Her original fire rain is so expensive that she can unleash only one wave. Reduced-consumption Flame fragments support her goal of producing a sustained, multi-wave attack against Qiji 82 125.
  • Inherited training: Has mastered numerous family techniques and, before fighting Qiji, had never been seen losing in practical combat class 50.

Person in the Mirror

Suyo first manifests this Armament through Imagery Forgery at the second tier. Its initial form resembles a humanoid assembled from broken mirror shards: the fragments serve as armor and blades, while refracted light forms its cloak 61.

  • Amplifies her Echo and gives her attacks sharp, aggressive power 62.
  • Initially requires up to five minutes of preparation, during which she cannot fight back 60.
  • Its forced manifestation leaves structural cracks and severe instability; its defensive strength may be a tenth or less of a stable Armament’s 63.

Thousand Faces, Myriad Forms

The Armament’s true-name release distributes its fragments into four full-length mirrors, producing Frost, Gale, Flame Dance, and Earth doubles 63.

  • Doubles can fight independently or combine elemental attacks, barriers, and restraints 63.
  • Releasing them drastically reduces the original body’s protection, trading defense for concentrated offense 63.
  • A clone can scout at a distance, though its combat power progressively weakens as it moves farther away 126.

Double Deconstruction

Allows Suyo to exchange places with a mirror double, concealing her real body within the mirror formation 64.

  • The exchange circuit becomes overloaded after use and cannot immediately be activated again 64.
  • Qiji exploits that interval to locate her real body and destroy its mirror 64.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Brother’s fox mask — The central object of her assumed identity. Qiji splits it during their match, then repairs it with frost and returns it 59 64 65.
  • Paired ornate folding fans — Used for elemental attacks and Flame Dance; change appearance alongside her Mimicry 55 56.
  • Imagery Forgery — A prism-shaped aid that enables her premature Armament manifestation. Its lingering spiritual “noise” initially prevents the Sea of Consciousness from recognizing her rank advancement correctly 59 61 137.
  • Six Epic Fragments — Refined with Qiji’s help before the Tide Grand Competition 137 172.
  • Dictatorship — An item card awarded for second place on East Island. Forces a match into a single-round decider, but its result can be overridden by Scatter Blossoms’ team-loss calculation 147 172.

Relationships

  • Her older brother, the original Suyo — Died saving her. She inherits his name and mask, imitates his mannerisms, and builds her life around becoming worthy of him 58 59 62.
  • Qiji — Her chief rival in reality and, unknowingly, the person she embraces as her brother’s Guardian Spirit in the Sea of Consciousness. He protects her secret, supplies fragments, and encourages her efforts while maintaining the second identity 65 80 81 125.
  • Thousand Faces Zhengxing — Her father. Blames her for her brother’s death, demands that she live up to Suyo’s name, and orders her into the Sea of Consciousness before the third tier. She later attacks him with fireballs in defiance 58 73 85.
  • Xiangyun — Her mother. Initially rejects her ability to replace her brother; later feels some pity but still agrees to the dangerous cultivation plan 59 73.
  • Bai Lili — Former fiancée. Suyo’s apparent coldness conceals genuine affection and distress over their engagement under her assumed identity. Her confession that she is a girl is mistaken for another rejection 64 132 133.
  • Vivian Isolde — Selects Suyo as her intended spouse after Qiji’s exploits are attributed to her. Their proposed union prompts the Thousand Faces Family to terminate the Bai engagement 128 129 132.
  • Thousand Faces Suqing — Older cousin who accompanies her to break off the Bai engagement and prioritizes the Isolde alliance over her attachment to Bai Lili 132.
  • Tian Hao — Competition teammate whose strategic advice she accepts. She believes his claim to have a secret informant and welcomes him as the team’s strategist 148.
  • Panyan, Cao E, and Chi An — Competition teammates who fight the team’s opening matches while she conserves strength 147 148.
  • Charles Isolde — Competition opponent who mistakes her for the person responsible for his humiliation in the Sea of Consciousness. His resentment toward Qiji is consequently directed at her 171 172.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Rivalry with Qiji

Suyo’s reputation as a masked genius is overshadowed by Qiji’s. Their rivalry becomes particularly humiliating when she confidently claims first place in the practical assessment, only to learn she has finished second behind him 10 15.

After publicly challenging him, she faces Qiji in a heavily attended joint practical class. Her elemental attacks, premature Armament, and mirror doubles fail to secure victory. Qiji breaks both her final mirror and her brother’s mask, then immediately raises fire walls to conceal her exposed face and preserve her secret 50 52 61 63 64 65.

The defeat shatters her belief that she can become her brother. She skips class, visits his grave, and admits that she has abandoned her own wishes to imitate him. Nevertheless, she chooses to try again 66 70 73 74.

Sea of Consciousness and the “Guardian Spirit”

Her family forces her into the Sea of Consciousness at the second tier, when destruction of her spirit body could be fatal. She nearly exhausts her Heart Essence swimming through corrosive water, then encounters hostile Consciousness Afterimages onshore 74 78.

Qiji rescues her while wearing a fox mask and manifesting his version of Person in the Mirror. Suyo becomes convinced that he is her dead brother returned as a Guardian Spirit; Qiji elects to play along 78 79 80.

His encouragement and fragment gifts restore her confidence. Their connection also unlocks Shared Mirror on Qiji’s Thousand Faces card: her future tier advancements strengthen his Armament, while completed sections of her Mental Image Palace grant it additional true names 81 82 127.

Mistaken Myth Fragment Holder and Marriage Alliance

Qiji’s actions in the Sea of Consciousness are mistaken for Suyo’s, leading others to believe she has obtained the Myth Fragment. She does not actually possess it: when shown the fragment, she celebrates her “brother’s” success rather than claiming it herself 121 125 126.

Suyo helps Qiji exploit the misunderstanding by returning to reality first and spreading news of her safe evacuation, undermining the Isolde blockade. The resulting reputation brings political protection, close scrutiny from the Echo Association, and Vivian’s marriage proposal 127 128 137.

Her family sacrifices the Bai engagement for the Isolde alliance. Suyo finally tells Bai Lili that she likes her and has never hated her, then reveals her gender—but Bai Lili runs away believing the explanation is a cruel excuse 129 132 133.

Tide Grand Competition

Suyo enters with six Epic Fragments and a developing Mental Image Palace. She places second on East Island, obtains Dictatorship, and follows Tian Hao’s advice to conserve strength while her teammates win the opening matches 137 147 148.

She defeats Yate after forcing a single-round decider. However, Charles’s Scatter Blossoms treats the separated Kalentia squads as one team when calculating defeat, preventing her victory from settling the matchup 159 172.

Charles subsequently overwhelms her using the Overload Core Concept Armament and destroys her competition spirit body. On awakening in Losers’ Square, Suyo rejects her butler’s accusations, attributes the equipment disparity to the Thousand Faces Family’s failure, and promises to win next time. Unlike after her loss to Qiji, she does not cry 171 172.

I’ll win it back. It’s only a matter of time.” 172

Trivia
